Default Historical Who Am I Riddles

This is a game that I just recalled playing on the official forums maybe 10-12 years ago and I looked around here and didn't see anything resembling this so I figured I'd start a new one. Essentially the rules of the game are as follows (they're fairly simple):

-I will lead with a riddle describing a historical figure followed by the phrase "who am I?".
-Based on the riddle's clues users can attempt to figure out who I am referring to, and the first to answer correct will be rewarded with one rep.
-The successful user will be given first option to create their own riddle using the same format, or defer to another user in which case the first posted riddle will continue the chain
-If another user responds with their own unique riddle to keep the chain moving I (or if I cannot do so another user) will rep the new riddle creator

I'm going to start with what I think is a fairly easy one somewhat based on what I remember making on the official TW forums all those years ago:

"A man of honor, yet weak enough to let the capital fall.
My empire was crumpling, while its brother stood tall.
Then after many victories my father finally failed the state,
And I, an emperor sat idle as our enemies sealed his fate.
Faced with the barbarians with whom I could not contend,
I was struck by sickness that took me to an early end."

    Who am I?

Sounds like Honorius. His father was Theodosius, and while the Western Empire was declining Honorius' brother, Arcadius, ruled in the East.

Yeah but tbh with the father line I referred to Stilicho, his father-in-law who had a great series of victories in desperate situations to stave off the downfall of the empire before numerous rebellions led him to pay Alaric to keep the truce. This paying off of Alaric pissed off the Senate so much they basically mutinied and organized his death, at which point really hit the fan and Alaric sacked Rome with relative ease. Weak Honorius basically just let a coup kill of his closest advisor and family member and then proceeded to die young.

Sorry that I didn't make the Stilicho connection.

Forgive me if my rhymes are terrible.

"I knew him not but my father was a king,
As a man I sailed and raided across the seas,
marrying two queens and many plunder did I bring,
defeated in battle I sank beneath the seas,
my hard fought throne a meaningless thing,
seeking my crown many emerged from the seas."

This is a tough one. I wanna say some sort of Viking King but I don't know any who married two queens. Then I thought Barbarossa who drowned but that doesn't make much sense. I think I may know it but I'll give others a shot to get it first.

I have the opposite problem. I have a guess that had two queens and fits with some details, but I do not know about whether my person died at sea, nor about whether he knew his dad...

Kinda sounds like Ragnar Lodbrok, depending on which source you pick. Sinking could refer to burial, rather than death. Don't know about the first line, but the rest fits.

Yeah it was Olaf Tryggvason. His father Tryggvi was a minor king in Norway (at Viken) and died presumably before Olaf was born. When he became an adult he made his own viking crew and raided the Baltic and the North Sea. At some point he married the Queen of Wendland and later married a Norse queen or princess in Ireland. Also at some point he converted to Christianity. But then afterwards he took the Norwegian throne, was however defeated in a naval battle, and jumped off the side of his ship and drowned. Then there were various wars for the control of the Norwegian throne. Such that it led to various Danes taking the throne for themselves, multiple between Olaf's death in 1000 and Harald Hardrada's death in 1066.

Surprisingly, when I checked the list there were less regicides in those times than I expected.

I'm going to guess Edward II of England.

Nope. Another hint: The “usurper” is much more well known than the person who is being asked for

MacBeth is right technically. Although the exact answer is Donnchad mac Crinnain.

Yeah Cookie is correct it is Duncan I of Scotland. Let’s analyze the lines:

A young man, yet old, according to the tragic story,
as I was cut down by the general seeking to steal my glory.
Duncan was portrayed as elderly in the Shakespeare play that made him “famous” 5 1/2 centuries after his death, as opposed to his death near 40 in real life. In the play he is murdered by Macbeth who is his most important general, while in real life Macbeth was his cousin (hence another claimant to the throne) and an important duke in the kingdom who killed him in combat during a revolt.

Yet following my death my sons slayed the usurper,
Reigning as kings who avenged their father’s murder.
Unlike the play in which IIRC Malcolm becomes King immediately following Macbeth’s death in battle, Macbeth in real life was succeeded by his son Lulach “the Simple-Minded”. Lulach was soon assassinated resulting in Duncan becoming named King of the Scots, followed by his brother. Donald, or “Donalbain” in the play. Together the brothers were not only able to kill Macbeth and his son but both became Kings.

And although our dynasty is dead and gone,
through the minds of millions our memory lives on
this line just acknowledges Donald’s Fame due to Macbeth.

I’ll give Cookie dibs at next riddle
