    I posted this question in the Totalwar subreddit forum but didn't get any response so i'd figure i'd try asking here.

    so it either starts off at 4 armor going from unarmored to getting the 1st armor upgrade and then it scales linearly by 1 (more or less);

    or from the last post, it scales linearly by +2 starting from unarmored and up (more or less).

    The above lists of gradual armor thickness are not estimates of something that is hardcoded in the game's exe file.
    They are more more like armor systems that can be implemented in a mod by means of the EDU.

    Personally, if I were to implement an armor graduation system, I would give unarmored troops an armor rating of one.
    This would represent the thickness of their own clothes and skin and the fact that it is possible for soldiers to receive non incapacitating injuries and keep fighting.
    Then, +3 for padded/boiled leather, another +3 for mail and so on and so forth with +3 increments for most of the upgrades.
    Needless to say I would only give each troop type only one upgrade.
    But that's just me.

    ahh.. so as far as vanilla goes, no one really knows how the armor system works?

    There is a small number of people who claim that they know but they don't really agree on the details.
    The only way to know for sure is to hack the exe but this is forbidden.
