I remember I had a $20 voucher and wanted to buy something for $19.99 in America, and I couldn’t afford it.

Europeans being confused by simple sales tax add-ons contribute to my belief that Europeans have no idea what they're talking about when they refer to their "free healthcare."

"I pay a 45% tax rate, but my healthcare is free!"

You're all ignoring the tax add ons, change my mind.

For fun once I calculated my tax consequence to the Free Euro Healthcare TM model over 20 years and came up with a figure of ~$750,000 in tax consequence over 20 years for just standard care and followups. Muh free healthcare

So what? That's also the same that they pay if they have AIDS or Leukemia or some . You will pay far far more in America than you will in Europe. It's not even close. Not to mention if you lose your job in America you typically lose your health insurance. Nice false equivalency though.

It's admittedly nice to have guaranteed nationalized health care here in Germany. Plus you always have the option to get private insurance. When I arrived in Germany, I had to see a doctor because I had a fungus infection on my thigh. That was before I had insurance. So I had to pay the doctor in cash, which only cost me 30 bucks without insurance (basically the same as an insurance premium). I was expecting like 500 bucks. I know this doesn't really have anything to do with nationalized healthcare, but from an American perspective the cheapness of uninsured medical service surprised me. The only negative thing I observed was the long waiting lines. The main concern I have with nationalized healthcare is long-term sustainability and long-term bureaucratization.

I don't understand why people don't say the same thing about the current American model. There's multiple layers of administration with thousands of dollars of fees being added on at each step. It's almost impossible for it to be less sustainable than it is now.

There is no doubt the American health system is in need of reform, despite American medicine's good quality and amazing ability to innovate. I just really hope it's not gonna be some dogmatic restructuring of the system into some bloated national healthcare that's gonna be crippled within 10 years. It might be better to solve this problem on the state level with government subsidies for following certain federal guidelines.

@Diamat: Medicals are much cheaper in Germany. Our Insurances are very tough when it comes to barder the prices of meds with the Big Pharma companies.

That used to be true 20 - 15 years ago. Not anymore imho. Now it's almost exclusively about profits, juking the stats for the boss and keeping those big fat big pharma endorsement fees flowing in. Doctors today write prescriptions based on how much they got payed by the fabricator and companies make and research drugs based on profit margins.

The american healthcare system need to be europeanised immediately.

I cannot speak for Athelstan, but I could have described it as confusing at first when I started working in the US back when cash was still a big thing everywhere. But maybe it was more like frustrating. To get rid of change and small bills when buying something small one would count the exact sum while lining in. So one could just have the money to the penny and hand it over quickly and be done with it, as is polite in Europe instead of starting to count your money on the counter. That plan did not survive first contact with the enemy in US. So you just put away whatever you were holding and reached for a twenty instead. And then received even more small bills and change.

But a person should learn how to cope. A person should also learn not to judge things as better or worse when they are just different. As I see it, in Europe, it is a matter of consumer rights that you should see the final price before making the decision to buy. In US, they prefer people to understand what the government is taking from them. I think that both practices serve a justifiable purpose. And of course, unless I am mistaken, in European states things such as sales tax are decided on a state level with no local government involvement, so it is the same everywhere within a state.

Sales tax in Tn where I live is like 9-10% so it's not that hard to figure out roughly what the sum will be before you get to the checkout. I worked as a cashier and most of the people already had roughly the proper amount of money ready. Paying with exact change isn't really a big thing unless you're an old lady either, so the most you'll have to wait for is for someone to pull out a couple bills. Personally, I think they should show the pre-tax and post-tax amount on the price sticker.

Unless they changed it it is 8.625 here so basically the same happens. You occasionally get foreigners pissed and confused when something is like a dollar extra than they expected
