    Old World Update: Bears!

A few weeks ago, we saw an early look at one of the factions that’s in the works for the return of Warhammer’s Old World – the cold northern nation of Kislev. Today, we’re taking a look at one of the thematic aspects of that force: bears!
Kislev is a cold and hard country which forms a natural border between the Empire of Sigmar and the Chaos tainted-lands further north. Between the chill winters and constant threat of marauding enemies, the people of Kislev are hard and constantly ready for battle, and they use all the meagre resources of their country to their advantage… including the most abundant of their native animals. As an added bonus, they’re a bit fierce too.

Many heroes of Kislev tame great bears and ride them to war. Forming a bond with their mighty beasts is not easy, but for those who do, it is lifelong – indeed, legend says that when Tsar Boris died, his loyal bear guarded his corpse for a day and a night before disappearing into the snow. Some of you might actually remember this classic model of Boris riding his bear from years past…

We can’t wait to see the bear cavalry that will be coming to Warhammer: The Old World. They’re a long way from being models yet, but we’ve secured some stunning concept sketches of what you’ll be able to expect.

This is only the beginning. Even though this game is quite a ways off yet, there’s loads of cool stuff to see over the coming months, and we’ll keep bringing you these awesome nuggets of what you can expect as the project progresses. Sign up to the Games Workshop newsletter to stay up to date, and keep an eye out for more news soon.

The Old World: Ice Guard of Kislev

One of the coolest aspects of returning to the world-that-was is the opportunity to revisit certain aspects of its classic lore and delve into them in greater detail than ever before. A perfect candidate for further investigation is the harsh, frozen realm found to the north of the Empire – Kislev, the land of the Ice Queens. To that end, let’s take a look at a project that’s currently in development…

    Putting the Class into Classic

The people of Kislev were renowned as being among the finest horsemasters in the world – and for giving a frosty reception to Norscan raiders and the hordes of Chaos who frequently invaded their land. They also had two iconic cavalry units in their Ungol Horse Archers and Kislevite Winged Lancers. Do you remember these miniatures from many years past? They’re so old, we reckon they were around during the last Ice Age…
Ungol Horse Archers Kislevite Winged Lancers

One new unit that’s in the early stages of development is set in the Ice Court – the seat of the ruling Tsar or Tsarina. Known as the Ice Guard, they’re an elite fighting formation of warrior women, equally skilled with bow and blade. But where they differ significantly from the other Kislevite units we’ve seen in the past is that they’re able to channel the elemental magic of their realm in a similar manner to their Ice Queen – the most powerful practitioner of this unique form of sorcery. Here are some awesome pieces of concept art for the Ice Guard, courtesy of Forge World’s Mark Bedford.

    Cool, huh?
Judging by the enchanted ice that wreaths their blades and arrow tips, we reckon they’ll make for some cold-hearted killers on the battlefield…
The Old World is still a long way off, but it certainly makes you wonder what else Kislev might have in store. In any case, if you’d like to learn more about Kislevite culture, be sure to read the Black Library Hall of Famer Riders of the Dead by Dan Abnett. Graham McNeill’s With Ice and Sword and David Guymer’s Gotrek and Felix novel Kinslayer are also fascinating reads, revealing the fate of Kislev during the apocalyptic End Times.

    Cartography in the Old World

You’ve seen the logo and we’ve hinted about what is to come, but today we’ve got another teaser for you – a work-in-progress of a new map of the Empire in the world-that-was…

To learn more about how the map was created, we spoke to Forge World artist and budding cartographer Louise Sugden.

Louise: With so much excitement having been generated by the announcement of this project, it was quite the privilege to be involved, but it also came with quite a lot of (entirely self-imposed!) pressure to get it right. This led to me checking as much reference material as I could find to ensure that all the geographical locations were as accurate as I could make them. It’s been a lot of fun capturing the fantastical feel of the Old World, but this is only a taste of things to come – there’s still loads more to be added!

Thanks, Louise! But that’s not all – check out this video below…

    Well, those look new…
Louise (left) and Holly Goodwin (right) – who worked on the heraldic shield designs – pore over their creation.

It’s still early days for the Old World project, but it’s great to see things already starting to come together! Over the coming months, we’ll keep you up to date with news from the project as it continues to take shape, including the lore, art, rules, and eventually… new models.

My first idea was that one article is mostly about Ice Guard/Ice Magic which is implying Katarina and second article about bears hinting Boris.

CA probably has tons of material for Chaos Deamons, Chaos Dwarfs, Ogres...so CA would probably ask GW to work primary on stuff that are needed sooner rather than on stuff that can wait 1-2 years from CA point of view. This for me implies Kislev might be pre-order race as CA will start work on pre-order soon. There is maybe just one more Lord Pack (around November) and then pre-order must be in production. So now it is probably in early pre-production,concept art for which colaboration with GW would be the best. Especially as what we see are concept arts

(i´m not convinced Kislev has enough stuff for Core factions or even 4 LL for bigger race pack. Adding one Cylostra why not but getting at least two more characters...where to put them? What difference..Kislev never was major global player. It is in my eyes Norsca style faction with 2 great LL )

EDIT: just to demonstrate things. We are just getting Eltharion in DLC in TW... while at the same time he is coming to AoS https://www.warhammer-community.com/...mepage-post-2/
The models are of course night and day. AoS has new version....but point is GW and CA clearly working together to promote both stuff. More likely CA was willing to re-shuffle LPs so Warden/Paunch is coming now. Just remember as before Shadow/Blade everybody was 100% sure Eltharion/Grom are coming....they were, just later... So what if now GW is helping out by dishing concept art so CA can use official stuff to create TW stuff in turn?

he Old World – Your First Look at the Map of Bretonnia

If you thought we’d forgotten about the Old World, then fear not – we’re back with another update about the (very) early development of the new game in an old setting!

In our last article, we looked at the map of the Empire as it was during the earlier era in which the action of the Old World is set to take place. This time around, we’re bringing you the map of the neighbouring kingdom of Bretonnia, across the Grey Mountains to the west…

Amazing, right? But to save you poring over the map until your eyes pucker like corn kernels in the sun, we’ll pick out some points of significant interest that our talented cartographers have added.
    New Heraldry

Even though many of the Bretonnian cities, such as Parravon, Quenelles, and Aquitaine, will no doubt be familiar to many, the names and coats of arms of the lords who command each province are brand-new.

However, one name, in particular, stands apart from all others, for it’s a name steeped in Bretonnia’s glorious history – that of the incumbent ruler, King Louen Orc-Slayer. But for someone to get a name like Orc-Slayer, there has to be…
    Orcs

The greenskins have been a thorn in the side of Bretonnia long since before the legendary Duke Gilles le Breton first won the favour of the Lady of the Lake and united the country under his rule. The alarming regularity of their Waaaghs! and destructive rampages is the primary reason why the northern lands of Bretonnia are so heavily defended with mighty castles and walled cities.

From the sheer number of greenskin icons dotting the north-eastern region of Bretonnia on the map, it’s clear that the Orcs are back on the warpath – and closer inspection of Couronne’s symbol on the map doesn’t bode well for the city’s current status either.
    High Elf Enclaves

The High Elves of Ulthuan were once the undisputed rulers of the seas, maintaining a trade network of colonies and glittering port-cities on every continent, from the Tower of the Rising Sun in the east to the Citadel of Dusk in the west.
The coast of Bretonnia was no exception, and the map features no fewer than four such enclaves. Tor Soleil sits on the north-west coastline, while Tor Bidouze can be found to the south-west, just north of the city of Brionne. Meanwhile, Tor Martel and The Silent Isle can be found on islands just off Bretonnia’s western coast.

All that and we didn’t even mention the Wood Elves! We’ll leave you to take another look at the map for now, but remember to sign up for our newsletter so that you’ll be among the first to be informed of the latest news about the Old World as and when it arrives.

I'm starting to Wonder if instead of making a game going East, CA may not do a Warhammer III with a rework of Old World with more details, and maybe a full map of Ulthuan / Naggaroth, Lustria and Souhtlands instead of the cropped version we have.

That maybe too much a déjà vu... But who knows

Well not so long ago Rich in stream said they have no plans for Bretonnia getting more units, maybe LP in game 3 ala Repanse...So who knows. But strange is, Kislev seems to be next remade faction for both Old World Return and Wh3. So why not Bretonnia..Plus if we look at all maps we have so far, it is very same one focusing basically on Wh1 campaign map. HE presence is nice wow because Albion is still unpainted so I was thinking nothing west, nothing east, south beyond that map. Meanwhile Expanded Bretonnia. New HE. New WE...I bet we will see Greenskins, Dwarfs (Norse Dwarfs), VC, Skaven?... But if GW is focusing really on "Old World" we won´t probably go beyond World Edge Mountains...Somehow it makes sense that GW will be focusing on old favourite factions. Why bet on something crazy ala Cathay/Ind/Nippon when majority of fans will gladly take update to older sure stuff? Well we will see and question what does it all means for Wh3. Is it possible Wh3 delay is also due to working with GW? To create framework for inclusion of those changes? I was thinking CA would ask GW to create concept arts, base concepts for stuff that CA can reuse in return. Like Kislev. But now?

From what I've seen CA has some brilliant in-house concept art (If we exclude the recent DLC unit cards...) - I don't think they'll need GW itself to do the dirty work for them, but rather go nuts in-house.

As you say though I'm very much expecting even Warhammer 3 to take some centerstage in the old world, whether it be through Kislev, which I assume is a must by then or continuing expanding the old world factions.

Watch Kislev battle a Bloodthirster in the first trailer for Total War: Warhammer III

Games Workshop and SEGA are proud to reveal Total War: Warhammer III, the long-awaited third instalment in the smash hit strategy series developed by Creative Assembly in partnership with the Warhammer creative studio.

That’s right, the Boyars of icy Kislev are ready to follow their Tzarina into battle once more as one of the game’s playable factions at launch. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also be able to command the daemonic armies of Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeentch, or Nurgle, thanks to the introduction of playable factions dedicated to each of the four Chaos Gods.

Regular readers of Warhammer Community will know that the Games Workshop creative studio is hard at work on Warhammer The Old World, a project that will see the return of the world-that-was to the tabletop, and their designs have fed directly into the development of Total War: Warhammer III. Check out this exclusive piece of concept art for the Kislevite Gryphon Legion for a taste of what they’ve been working on.

Ruled by the indomitable hand of Tzarina Katarin, known as the Ice Queen as much for her demeanour as her magic, the proud warriors of Kislev have a long history of struggle against the forces of Chaos that has moulded them into a hardy, determined people. Rightly famed for the quality of their cavalry, some even ride to war on the back of ferocious, armoured polar bears, their winged banners fluttering in the frozen wind.

Don’t take our word for it, though, we’re just the humble messengers. Here are Andy Hoare and Mark Bedford to tell you all about their work on an earlier period in Kislev’s history for Warhammer The Old World.

Now, you’re probably wondering what other factions you’ll be able to command when Total War: Warhammer III launches. Well, we can reveal one more, and it’s a biggie.

Eagle-eyed viewers among you may have spotted the name of Grand Cathay at the end of the trailer, and now the largest empire in the Warhammer world will finally be getting its time in the sun.*
The Dragon Empire of Cathay has long been mentioned in the background of Old World history and, thanks to the Warhammer studio’s work in close partnership with Creative Assembly, fans will be able to get their first real taste of this fascinating empire in Total War: Warhammer III at launch.
Find out all about the new game on Creative Assembly’s blog on totalwar.com, and pre-order it now on Steam and the Epic Games Store to play later in 2021.

Make sure to watch the trailer again in case you missed anything, and keep a close eye on Warhammer Community for more information on Total War: Warhammer III and Warhammer The Old World as we get further into this year. Last but not least, we showed the trailer to a few of our staff not too long ago and… well, you’d better see their reactions for yourself.

A Giant Bear Beats Up Daemons in Total War: Warhammer III’s New Gameplay Trailer

It’s been a few months since the awesome reveal trailer for Total War: Warhammer III, and if you’re anything like us you’re already chomping at the bit for more information. Luckily for us, Ursun provides for his faithful, so feast your eyes on the world premiere of these brand new cinematic and gameplay trailers featuring everyone’s favourite defenders of the frozen north.

There’s a lot going on in the trailer, so we’re going to pick out a few of our favourite things for you to feast your eyes on.

Survival – A New Game Mode

Veteran generals of the Total War: Warhammer series will be familiar with siege battles and the uphill struggle that comes with assaulting an enemy on their home turf. Now you’ll be tested more than ever, as Survival has you fighting through defences and capturing vital areas to plunge deep into the enemy’s heartland.

There’s not enough space on the page to describe everything you’ll be doing in the new game mode, so make sure to watch the gameplay reveal video below and find out everything you can ahead of the game’s release.

    Little Grom

While having cannons towed by mere packhorses and pushed into place by their gunners might be good enough for the Empire, the unforgiving nature of war in the frozen north demands a more hardy approach, designed by our very own studio for Warhammer The Old World.

Instead of horses, the giant gun affectionately named Little Grom is towed by two mighty bears atop a magical carpet of ice – nearby Kislevites are so emboldened by its majesty that they fight even harder than usual in its presence.

    Elemental Bear

The warriors of Kislev believe that, in times of great need, the land itself will rise up in defence of Ursun’s faithful. A massive invasion from the Chaos Wastes undoubtedly qualifies, and so the gigantic Elemental Bears are called from the earth to fight back the tides of daemons.

Designed by the Warhammer studio, the Elemental Bear is a colossal engine of destruction that embodies everything Kislev’s people hold dear about their homeland. Frankly, there’s no better symbol of Kislev than a giant bear made of ice and stone, and even the daemons of Chaos will know to fear their brute strength and crackling frost magic.

Before we let you go off to watch over the trailers again, we do have one more thing to share. As you’ll have gathered by now, the Kislev units appearing in Total War: Warhammer III are being designed for Warhammer The Old World by our very own creative team.

We took a look at one of them last year, the Tsarina’s devoted Ice Guard, and now we want to show you the map of Kislev as it appeared in the time of heroes like Louen Orc-Slayer.

Alongside the maps of Bretonnia and the Empire that we saw earlier, the landscape of the Old World is starting to come into focus. Let us know on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter what you’re looking forward to most from the frozen north, and keep an eye on Total War’s Facebook and Twitter channels for more information on the game as it appears. You can also pre-order Total War: Warhammer III on Steam and the Epic Games Store now.

-looking at map ....top right corner - Hobgobla-Khans , Norse Dwarfs again and Wheatlands looks like a thing.

Why do they make these maps with this frustrating resolution where some things can be read or guessed at but a lot of stuff is still not legible. Would it really hurt them to make these just a tiny bit bigger?
