Default Calling a Crusade on an Excommunicated Faction

I've been playing my new Sicily campaign and I'm enjoying it a lot. However my only Catholic enemy, the Venetians, keep attacking me and consequentially keep getting excommunicated. I always try to call a crusade on them immediately after they are excommunicated but their cities never show up in the "Crusadable Cities" screen. Is there something special I have to do to be able to crusade on an excommunicated faction?

Also, I'm playing Lusted's LTC mod, I'm not sure if that changes anything, I do'nt believe it does.

That is odd cause excommunicated factions seem to dominate the Crusade target list if I am calling for a Crusade.

Wow that's handy. It could be due to the fact they have so few cities. Venice only had 2 cities at the time, and when Milan was excommunicated they only had 2 cities as well.

True that. Just recently in my current campaign as England, France just got booted out of Jerusalem by the mob and so I was looking to call a Crusade to recapture the holy city. At the same time, Hungary was excommunicated so when I went to call a Crusade, all but one city (not Jerusalem) were Hungarian territory. What can you do right? Just play on.

The Pope also has a list of favorite targets for a Crusade that tend to come up a lot. These start with Jerusalem for obvious reasons, and if France gets excommunicated he will often ask for a Crusade against Toulouse (mimicking the Albigensian Crusade). Also, if he's booted out of Rome he likes to ask you to Crusade against Rome and then ask you to give it to him.:hmmm:

Huh, I guess that would explain why when I took Toulouse from the French (as English) despite the Pope telling me not to or face excommunication, the next turn he called a Crusade on Toulouse.

Well that one makes sense, the Pope wants his pretty palace back.

I spent some time trying to work this out. For excommunicated factions only their capital becomes a target unless the pope takes a dislike to the faction leader in which case all cities with a family member governing show up on the list. My guess is that their family members are roaming the countryside and not governing.

Handy yes, but I tend to not go on Crusades against excommunicated factions. A little too unbased in history for it to happen, and I'd rather Crusade in the Holy Land. Going on and completing a Crusade is the best way to make your family members great generals with high rankings, and I only conquer settlements in the Holy Land if there is a Crusade called on it.
