Thread: [WIP] Unit Workshop

    Default [WIP] Unit Workshop

Hello everybody. Far to be a battle-ready release, I'm posting some units of mine, with the ambitious project to at least try to collect the torch of Taro's work (long may live the king), to complete the aor coverage of the southern fiefs. Try not to roast me too much at least

    Here are some quick examples

Spoiler for Knights of Pinnath Gelin

    Spoiler for Lamedon Nobles

Wow, perhaps a little to quick. I checked if you perhaps made a mistake but there is absolutely nothing there to correct.

I actually kept the standard dimensions, not my fault.

No one gonna deny they have an intimidating and fascinating aura tho

The faces of the knights look weird and the green on their capes seems too intense on occasions.

Looking forward to seeing more from you!

I used Taro's head, but he darkened the texture around the eyes to simulate the helmet's shadow. Since my helmet has a wider opening on the face, I need to redo the texture (I just brightened it back) or the model as a whole. It's on the to-do list.

Edit: I'm dumb. I just remembered that the veterans battered version was helmetless. Working on the normal maps atm. I also lowered the capes saturation.

Spoiler for Knights of Pinnath Gelin
Essentially it's based on the Kingdom of Arda's preview (a mod in development for Mount&Blade Bannerlord)
    Spoiler for KoA's preview

    Spoiler for Milkshape wip

First thing first, these as for now are the Pinnath Gelin cavalry, upgraded and not.

Main topic now. My intention is to rethink Gondor's fiefdoms military, building it up similarly to the italian city-states (Tolkien's historical source of ispiration). For this reason, I picked an italian medieval state for each fiefdom, and I'm taking their military as a reference.

    *WARNING* historical rant ahead

    Pinnath Gelin

Pinnath Gelin's counterpart is Florence. Both of them are fertile and hilly lands; moreover Hirluin arrived into Minas Tirith with "three hundred of gallant green-clad men", and Florence was one of the main cloth producers at the time.

So, I took the depictions of the battle of Campaldino, a battle between Florence and Arezzo on 1289

    Spoiler for Some examples

Cavalry is the main fighting force, and it's composed by the lords and their retinues, both well trained and equipped.
Infantrymen are equipped with a spear and a big recttangular shields, the pavise, with which they form literally a wall. An Aretine poet wrote that the archbishop Guglielmino degli Ubertini, Arezzo's commander, was actually shortsighted, and when he looked at the battlefield, where the florentine infantry formation already standed , he asked his aides what city's were the walls in the plain.

For these reasons, I'm thinking about something like this

    EDIT: quick update

    Spoiler for spearmen, ug0

Disclaimer: I'm on my notebook atm, and it's not the most up-to-date hardware on the planet. To say it gently. Therefore, I haven't been able to work on normals for the last few days. Ah, and no in-game screens for now. Not gonna show mah low-low graphics to the world.

Still, I gave the spearmen a lil touch:
    Spoiler for spearman_ug1

    Spoiler for spearman_ug2

A focus on the changed chest texture for the plated units:
    Spoiler for pg_plate

I started working on the officers, but I'm on a pretty big meh helmet side

As long as I have time, fantasy and will...

Update: I finished the normals for now. You can admire them in all their charm. I considered for a moment to build an archer unit, but I'm thinking to stop here concerning Pinnath Gelin. I'll work on Pelargir or Lamedon next.

Spoiler for Pinnath Gelin Knights + banner

Spoiler for Pinnath Gelin Spearmen + banner

Spoiler for Pelargir references and theme
Continuing the italian theme, Pelargir gotta take inspiration from Venice. Not only it's logical (the only alternative being Genoa, the Superb), but Tolkien himself stated that. Therefore, Venetian theme incoming: no cavalry, no big shields, no big weapons, no full plate armor. You cannot maneuver on a ship with those things. Long live hammers, short swords, bucklers, crossbows, leather and mail armors.
    Spoiler for images
    Spoiler for helmets
Spoiler for Infantry, shield with handle
    Spoiler for sword+buckler infantry

P.S. I'm struggling with the transparency for the textures, the plumes in particular. They just keep on having a grey-ish border around. Does anyone have a workaround for this old man?

I would love to see Pelargir infantry armed with hammers! Hardly anyone represents historical warhammers anywhere (unless they're oversized, hardly practical hammers). I would love to model one for you if you need help!

Your transparency issue might be caused by the fall-off from regular brushes. I suggest you try the pencil tool to paint your alphas.
Alternatively you can try sharpening your alpha channel.

Sure! Any help/opinion/tip is very welcome. The medieval period is a passion of mine, so I'm a bit on that side too regarding hammers. I mean, since XIII century that was the primary weapon alongside spears

Uhm, gonna check it out asap. Thanks for the hint.

Meanwhile, I slowed down in the last days, but I got something. Still working on it tho

    Spoiler for bucklers
