    Default Switzerland: Who misses them?

In MTW, the Swiss were quite a faction. They had an excellent roster (Swiss halberdiers, Swiss Pikemen), an easily defensible position, and most of all, their General's Bodyguard weren't cavalry but armoured pikemen!

I know they didn't emerge as a legitimate country till 1291 (or 1315), but surely CA could have put them in as an emerging faction? Even if we didn't get to play with them it still would have been interesting to have them in the game.

Saying this though, I sure there are plenty of other perfectly good nations who didn't make the game . It's just the Swiss are my favourite .

+1 means that he increased your reputation, and the = Me too ^^ part means that he agrees with you.

AS do I, I remember the Swiss in MTW, I hated them, almost impossible to conquer in the beginning

I think you got it right there. There are a lot of nations that emerged during the time period this game covers. It would be incredibly difficult to to have these factions just randomly appear. If you think people whine a lot about missing a faction, just wait until the event arrives and blam, you lose two or three provinces that never had any unrest to the emerging Swiss. People would scream.

Maybe you could make it be tied to the level of unrest in a province. If you are past 1290 and happiness in Bern is less than 80% then there is a 12% chance of rebellion and the Swiss faction appearing. Something like that. But I think that CA will say that it is way too much work to develop factions that probably won't appear too often.

It would make the game a bit more exciting though. And yes, I loved those Swiss pikemen...

If you want to know, BTW, why i became obssessed with them, it's because, playing as the HRE, I could never conquer them (I was young at the time, cue a lot of hair pulling and "stupid game" rants)

This david and goliath struggle (+armoured pikemen bodyguard) really infatuated me and it's originally what got me into modding.

EDIT: Look at the "For the Swiss confederation" AAR, it's really something (and it includes our beloved Swiss)

Well I never played MTW, but I've always had a thing for Swiss Pikemen, because I've come to think of them as the elite pikemen of the medieval world. And besides, who doesn't love pikemen?!

well maybe they didn't put the Swiss because there was no space in the campaign map

I dont miss how good they were. As germany or france, I always lost if I started in the late period, cause they would invade from their little province.

Or, if I tried to annihilate them at the start with all my troops, I would lose....

I loved the swiss in mtw1.
I remember playing as them too after editing the campmap files. They were kind of buggy, always faced game crashes with them...

But, I can't say I remember their princes/king being swiss armoured pikemen.

They were royal knights like other catholics.

It was actually a bug that sometimes their princes/king would show up as highlanders!!!

I don't recall them ever being good on the campaign map.

The germans or italians usually just gobbled them up in about 16 turns.

The only three factions I ever recall dominating on the campmap was the spanish, english, and egyptians.

Spain would just flood through africa and iberia.

England would spread like a wildfire through western and northern europe.

And egypt, well egypt was like an ebola outbreak rushing through the mideast, anatolia, and the steppes.

I also remember a few factions that would always get pumbled in the campmap like a constant...

The turks were gone in less than a heartbeat.

The french faced catastrophe within a fortnight.

And the russians were goners before the bell rang.

It was a while ago, but i'm certain their bodyguard was one of armoured pikemen. And as for being buggy, well, on my computer everyone was (and still is) buggy!

Their armored pikemen were invincible to melee it seemed. Leastways I never found a unit that could beat them. They could slice through cavalry like a hot knife through butter, and were basically only vulnerable to gunpowder and arbalests IIRC.

i've neverplayed the orginal mtw, so i cant say i miss them since i've never experienced them. but if the armoured pikemen bodyguard are anything to go by they sound great and my sort of faction, the big point sticks, wish they were included, more so becuase i wish a general could have a dismounted bodyguard sometimes

Funny thing about what you said about swiss invasion, seeing as they only had one province, and it was the smallest in the game surrounded by HRE, France, and Italy
"Although extraordinary valor was displayed by the entire corps of Spartans and Thespaians, yet bravest of all was declared the Spartan Dienekes. It is said that on the eve of battle, he was told by a native of Trachis that the Persian archers were so numerous that, when they fired their volleys, the mass of arrows blocked out the sun. Dienekes, however, undaunted by this prospect, remarked with a laugh, 'Good. Then we'll have our battle in the shade.'" - Histories, 7.226

I can´t recall ever having seen them in MTW, but the Swiss units are always a welcome addition to my HRE army, especially the Swiss Halberdiers.

Tru their heavy infantry was extremly good.
@ramtha - from what I can remember most of my mtw1 campaigns were dominated by Almohads - their Urban militia units were so overpowered it was pure fun playing as them in the early period ;-)
