Default Iranian cleric lashes out at Ahmedinijad

Iran's senior dissident cleric, Grand Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri, has attacked President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over nuclear issues and the economy.

The bold remarks came in a written statement by the 85-year-old, who was once in line to succeed Ruhollah Khomeini as supreme leader.

He spent years under house arrest after falling out with Ayatollah Khomeini.

He said nuclear energy was Iran's right, but questioned the way President Ahmadinejad had pursued it.

Using harsh and provocative language would provoke the enemy, Grand Ayatollah Montazeri said, calling instead for negotiations.

His comments came as a report by Iran's Isna news agency suggested that 38 inspectors working for the United Nations nuclear agency had been barred from entering Iran.

In a separate development, the European Union criticised Iran for not co-operating with the UN over demands that it curbs its nuclear programme.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards also announced several days of exercises in the centre of the country.

Two new types of Iranian-produced missile would be tested, one said to have a range of 75km (47 miles), the other 350km, state radio said.

    Scathing attack

The grand ayatollah spoke out against Mr Ahmadinejad in remarks to reformists and opponents of the president in the religious city of Qom last Friday, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri compared Iran's natural resources favourably to those of other countries.

"Some countries don't have oil and gas. Yet, they run their country and stand on their own," he said, according to a copy of his words seen by AP.

"We have so much oil and gas but make useless expenditures work for others and don't think of our own people's problems and the price of basic commodities goes higher and higher every day."

He complained that people kept on shouting slogans about nuclear rights, but he asked: "Don't we have other rights too?"

It was a pointed reference to concerns about diminishing freedom of speech in Iran under Mr Ahmadinejad, says the BBC's Frances Harrison in Tehran.

Grand Ayatollah Montazeri also launched a scathing attack on the president's handling of the economy.

He said some claimed inflation was only 13% in Iran, but everyone knew the cost of housing had risen more than 50%.

He asked why the government went on what he called useless trips and spent money on others abroad, seemingly a reference to President Ahmadinejad's recent tour of Latin America and Iranian aid to Palestinian groups like Hamas.
So much for Iran being a tyranical state with no freedom of speech. Also the Ayatollah is right on. Douchbag-dinajad is a low class peasant that needs a serious reality check.

    Very interesting development.
I'm most interested if Khomeini agrees with his fellow Grand Ayatollah.

Ahmadinejad already lost the support of the voters.
If he also looses the support of the Ayatollahs I think his days as president will be numbered.

Also interesting to see how this Ayatollah apparently is much more stable than the elected president.
(so far for myth that theocracies cause instability)

*point to the number of recorded riots and demonstrations that took place in Iran last year*

Riots aimed at the democratic government, not the religious leadership.
Also points out at the civil wars going on in Iran's democratic neighbors, compared to the stability in Iran's dictatorial neighbors.

A senior cleric being able to speak out does not indicate freedom of speech.
Even some students who had been sleeping or doing their morning prayers were thrown out through the windows from the second and the third floors.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3879535.stm that is your Iranian 'freedom of speech'...and Ahmadinejad wasnt even the leader at the time. Spin it anyway you want but the Iranian people especially the moderate reform minded youth are under the heels of a theoracy that has no problems cracking down when they deem it necessary.

If a member of the theocratic government is worried about freedom of speech imagine how the general population feels.

Im sick and tired of people pretending Iran is a happy clappy state with a bad reputation.

Their human rights violations alone are a massive cause for concern

He should also lash out at the public strangulation of people using cranes.

President of Iran is puppeteer if compared to Council of Ayatollah's - they have the last word in any case concerned. Ahmadinejad can make a show but that all.

assuming the army is on their side... From what i've heard their is a serious power struggle going on in Iran and the Ayatollahs are getting nervous with President Tom.

I'd be curious to see who's side the military is on in this. Are they going to go where the love and tom are or are they going to clamber to the same people that has all but scrapped them in the past?
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Well the Revolutionary Guard wich is supposed to be fiercely loyal to the ayatollahs, refused to act when the mullahs ordered them to stop some student protests in Teheran.
Ofcourse if attacked there is no doubt that the army will fight. When Iraq attacked them, even the arab minority sided with the government in Teheran even though the arabs are usually not too fond of the persians in charge.

I think people need to realize this is not a government cleric. He's an independent figure. Apparently he was under house arrest after falling out with Khomeini. So he's a "dissident" cleric. He has not free-pass or immunity, its dangerous for him to speak out.

Good for him. It's pity to know that many muslims living in freer societies don't have that much courage.

So how do you reconcile your assertion that Iran is not a tyrannical state with no free speech with the fact that this guy is under house arrest for speaking and it is dangerous for him to do so again?

As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

Err what freedom of speech? From what I understand the president has less power then the Cleric's so the Clerics can say pretty much what they want. I agree with everything else you say though, it's clear that the Cleric are clever enough to realise they should be avoiding war with the united states at all costs.
