    Default Hatred of the Police

    You don't hate the EMT's

    You don't hate the Firemen

    Yet, you hate "cops"

    My question is why?

They all three keep you safe, and in some cases save your lives!

EMTs treat you when you're hurt, Firemen protect your homes and your lives from fires, and Law Enforcement Officers protect you from a long list of things from Rape to Murder. Yet, alot of people call them "Pigs".

I recently, a month ago maybe, made the life changing decision to base my career in Law Enforcement, I'm hoping to get a job as a metropolitan Police Officer, later detective, in a large cities police department, and I realy would like to know why people hate 'cops' so much.

Personally I've been afraid of them catching me doing illegal things, things I regret knowing I'll have to admit to during a polygraph during the hireing process, but I've never "hated" them at all.

I shall never again play GTA of any type, I don't think it's right anymore to shoot a police officer, in fact I'm a little shocked that I used to laugh about it with my friends.

I find it a little disturbing that the people who put their lives on the line for you daily get the least of respect because they do a job that some don't like.

They're not in the best of shape, but they're people, and this photo illistrates that.

100 of them died on 9/11 to get people to safety, people who probably scorned them the day before.

    Nobody hates cops.

We just hate white police officers who discriminate against black people...

I dont think anyone truely does hate the cops except for the people that regularly break the law. The reason that they're titled 'pigs' is much more a product of 'jumping on the band wagon' than any real dislike. Deep down we all know that cops are in a lot of ways the most noble and trustworthy members of the community.

Its also a shame because the media (in NZ at least) seems to love to portray the police in a bad light whenever anything goes wrong that's even remotely related to police. Its saddening, to be honest, because we all know that the truth is different.

On a personal note, i do think that they could do a better job (so can everyone in their given profession) but i think we can all appreciate that they try their absolute best in a job thats far more selfless than the vast majority of professions.

So, in conclusion... GW to all police out there , and congrats Corporal regarding deciding to join the ranks.

Well, in the big picture take on things, cops, firemen, and EMTs are somewhat different in their image and purpose.

EMTs sole duty is to get their butts to wherever a wounded man is and take him to the hospital while keeping him alive as best as they can along the way. Here, something has happened and the EMT is here to keep those who aren't dead yet alive until they get to the hospital. There's little room to get into trouble with the local population, since it's hard to get mad at guys that rush in to help injured people as quickly and as efficiently as they can.

Firemen, like EMTs, have a specific imagined role in society. Whenever there's a house or building on fire, the firemen have to rush out and put it out while saving those inside to the best of their ability. A house is on fire, and they're the guys sent out to put that fire out before it hurts the house anymore and before it starts hurting the other houses around it. It generally tends to leave a good taste in people's mouths when firemen come and put out flames, since rarely will a community 'hate' to see a fire rage on unchecked among their homes.

Police, however, are of a different 'stock' altogether. Whereas firemen deal with problems caused, usually, by accidents and natural occurances and paramedics deal with problems concerning wounds and pains caused by accidents and natural problems (and injuries from other people, although they don't necessarily deal with the problem makers, just the person in trouble), policemen must deal mostly with people vs. people situations.

Unless the guy taken to jail is some sort of diseased outcast, someone won't be happy to see him arrested in the community, and even if he's generally unliked, arrest isn't something normally wished on someone unsavory by others (unless they really deserve it of course).

See, police must deal with people, and in this case with sensitive situations where emotions run high - shootings, domestic violence, community crimes, etc. Thus, they are more prone to having negative interactions with a community than say firemen. With firemen and paramedics, they're only here to help someone, but with police it's usually about taking someone down.

This can lead to resentment between a community and policemen, because taking someone downtown can be seen negatively by the community as an attack on them, especially if they believe the arrested to be innocent.

In turn, the police find themselves having to protect a community that gives them a cold shoulder, and sometimes may 'ignore' the place when it really needs a cop on patrol. Because of this, the tension soars even more, with some areas complaining about abysmally slow police responce to their neighborhoods. It's a two-part problem and one usually leads to the other. Because of this relationship, we see lots of tension between some police precints and some communities, leading to the oft televised 'police beatings' and 'cop killings' we seem to be plagued with.

First cops represent authority and I hate authority, second cops have some powers and priviledges, they got guns and the right to use them for instance, like most people with power they tend to abuse it, sure not all, perhaps just a small minority, but the damage is done.
I can think of many examples of cops abusing their power with very ill results for the abused. I remember people dying, getting severely injured etc just because a hothead cop pulled the trigger to prove he has the balls to do it.
Whats even more? Cops are the units of law enforcement and they tend to band together, so a cop doing sth wrong will not get easily punished for it. Examples range from the simplest misconduct to more severe situations, eg it is by far easier for a cop to run like the devil with his car and get away with it, than it is for me.
All these and more contribute IMO to cops being viewed as pigs.

PS And Ill never stop killing cops in GTA, going against authority is simply me, even if I only do it through a PC monitor, well most of the time at least.

    Why?
The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.

The police are unreliable; they never help the innocent or those in need. Despite swearing to "protect and serve", they do anything but. The cops, quite simply, are bull**** and often a racist bunch of thugs.

I think most police are good people, but in some countries and in some areas they might be corrupt, possible due to all the stress and all the violence they see.

I have a very positive view of Finnish cops. They've always been very proffessional about their business when I've had the pleasure of dealing with them. I feel I can trust the Finnish policeman.

I love the rozzers and believe there should be far more of them. My grandfather was a riot policeman, and was involved in the toxteth riots in the 1980s, after which he had to spend some time in hospital having been smacked on the head with a brick.

I hate the laws, not the police, if that makes any sense. Most of the cops I've known are good people just trying to do their job.

To begin with, most police officers I've known think they are above the law. Also most have been elitist, believing and acting as though they are better than the average person (I'm assuming this has to do with police academy training and parallels it may have with military training). Another problem I have with police officers is that all they care about is making an arrest. It doesn't matter if they arrest whomever is guilty for the crime or not. They simply need an arrest. It is also a near-universal truth that police officers are discriminate in how they enforce the law. For instance a friend or relative of a police officer is less likely to get a ticket than a complete stranger.

In the area where I was raised the police force (and whole political scene in general) is one big family. This is a literal and physical truth. If the Sheriff and all of his deputies aren't related by blood, they are related by marriage. To make matters worse the county prosecutor is the daughter of the local judge (I'm not sure what type of judge and he isn't the only judge, but still...). The Sheriff is related to them by marriage. Conflict of interest?

Obviously not all police officers are corrupt or deserving of my hate, but I'm still wary of any man -or woman- in a police uniform.
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
