    Default Brazilian President Bolsonaro's policies

Fascism has arrives in Brazil. Bolsonaro, the new President, has a very clear anti-Indian and anti-black agenda. It's an old story, started with Getulio Vargas's dictatorship in the 1930's and his racialist ideology intended to remake Brazil along some kind of mythicalEuro/North American line. According to Bolsonaro, Funai (the National Indigenous Foundation) deliberately chose the "richest and most fertile" lands to "give away" to "Indians and blacks", while stealing land from whites who had been "living there for centuries" (sic). And- "We're going to put an end to all the activisms of Brazil" Jair Bolsonaro, on Day 1, Undermines Indigenous Brazilians' Rights
President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil, who has compared indigenous communities living in protected lands to animals in zoos, took a major step toward undermining the rights of indigenous people just hours after taking office on Tuesday. In one of a handful of measures that stand to hurt historically marginalized communities, the incoming government on Tuesday transferred responsibility for certifying indigenous territories as protected lands to the ministry of agriculture. The ministry has traditionally championed the interests of industries that want greater access to protected lands. The certification was previously overseen by the National Indian Foundation, a government agency tasked with safeguarding the rights and welfare of indigenous communities.
--- More- Bolsonaro gives priority to ideological issues, Bolsonaro government launches purge of Brazil public service
The administration of Brazil's new President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday it is starting a purge of government contractors to get rid of those who don't share its far-right ideology. The sweep will target contractors deemed sympathetic to the centrist and left-wing parties... some might be rehired if they passed an "evaluation" of their ideological leanings.
Bolsonaro abolished Human Rights Ministry For "Family Values": Brazil's Minister for Women, Family, Damares Alves, is a lawyer, evangelical preacher and said, "It is time for the church to govern." (sic) BuzzFeed News - "It's a new era in Brazil: Boys wear blue... | Facebook She says,
It's a new era in Brazil: Boys wear blue and girls wear pink!
----- "Brazil above all, God above everyone", he says. "God, Homeland, Family", was the motto of the Salazar's regime. Some "interesting" quotes, "Pinochet should have killed more people.I'm in favor of torture. If one's son begins acting kind of gay, then when he is spanked he'll change his behavior. To the federal deputy Maria do Rosário:"I wouldn’t rape you because you do not deserve it." As the Foreign Policy put it, Jair Bolsonaro's Model Isn't Berlusconi. It's Goebbels. – Foreign Policy
The far-right Brazilian leader isn’t just another conservative populist. His propaganda campaign has taken a page straight from the Nazi playbook. It is not a coincidence then that last month in Brazil, the German Embassy was besieged online by commentators claiming Nazism was socialism.
Enjoy, follow the link, many of the outraged commenters on the German Embassy’s post were supporters of Bolsonaro.

This type of hysteria is precisely why people like Bolsonaro are winning elections everywhere.

Ludicus, my beloved, may I dare to tell you that in my humble opinion, you have been a little optimistic in saying that Fascism arrived in Brasil with Bolsonaro, read:

    .
The 1964 Brazilian coup d'état (Portuguese: Golpe de estado no Brasil em 1964 or, more colloquially, golpe de 64)
was a series of events in Brazil from March 31 to April 1 that led to the overthrow of President João Goulart
by members of the Brazilian Armed Forces, supported by the United States government.

    .
Actually, Fascism arrived in Brasil with the military golpe of 1964, firmly supported by the American President Lyndon Baines Johnson (August 27, 1908 – January 22, 1973), a Democrat from Texas, (in-)famous for having succeeded Kennedy after his assassination and for having escalated the American involvement in Vietnam war. As you can see, at the basis of any true Fascism there is always a leftist promoter.

Instead, our poor Bolsonaro simply dared to win the elections in Brasil, defeating a leftist candidate! .. sadly nowadays this is more than enough for being labeled with the infamous epithet of "Fascist", by the ideologically bankrupt lunatic leftist legions and by their отдел агитации и пропаганды ("Department for Agitation and Propaganda"), also known as "Mainstream Media Apparate".

Bolzonaro’s distasteful stance towards torture, ideologically purging same as Justin Trudeau, and anti-environmental policies with regard to industry, he’s not a fascist.

What does this have to do with affirmative action, which anyone and everyone would be correct to oppose. The OP demonstrates how craven racial discrimination laws are. I hate affirmative/positive action, it belittles minorities, and you see disturbing affirmative action in major political parties such as Labour and SNP as Epic fail posted.

The words brought me crashing to earth. I started to question how many of my other successes were real. I thought about other jobs I had, where I believed that I had been the best candidate and where the significance of my ethnicity hadn't occurred to me. I began to question my ability.

I was raised to understand that the world did not owe me a living and I have prided myself on being someone who never accepts something for nothing. But my confidence was fundamentally shaken on that day, the day I learnt my CV was meaningless and I was simply fulfilling a quota.

Sounds like Brazil was basically turning into a failed state after years of leftist misrule. Brazilians just wanted to try something different, I guess.

    https://www.theatlantic.com/internat...litics/551423/

But the global recession and a collapse in global commodities prices foiled Lula and his successor, Dilma Rousseff. Operation Carwash, which began in 2014 and uncovered a massive corruption scheme involving Petrobras, politicians, and construction companies, in which billions of dollars were siphoned off from public coffers, outraged Brazilians and signaled the beginning of the end for the Workers’ Party. In May 2016, Brazil’s senate impeached Dilma Rousseff, Lula’s successor, for manipulating the federal budget. With crime and violence skyrocketing, unemployment hitting a record high, and a never-ending slew of political scandals, Brazil spiraled into chaos. In 2016, the police gave up trying to control violent areas of Rio de Janeiro, Bolsonaro’s district, because the government couldn’t pay the police. Some began to wonder if what their country needed was a more disciplined, firmer approach to governing.

    ...

Today’s news is also likely to further erode whatever remaining trust Brazilians feel for their country’s political elite. In a recent survey by Ipsos, 94 percent of Brazilians said they don’t feel represented by their politicians. José Maria de Souza Junior, an international relations professor at Rio Branco University in Sao Paulo, said Brazilians are facing a moral crisis. “When the economy is doing badly, when there are no jobs, we respond to that … We are very sensitive,” he said.

In recent years, as crisis has consumed Brazil, there has been a notable shift in political, social, and religious attitudes. According to a 2016 survey, 54 percent of the Brazilian population held a high number of traditionally-conservative opinions, up from 49 percent in 2010. The shift is particularly evident on matters of law and order: Today, more Brazilians are in favor of legalizing capital punishment, lowering the age at which juveniles can be tried as adults, and life without parole for individuals who commit heinous crimes. Observers have ascribed this phenomenon to Brazilians’ increasing fear of violence over the last few years. This rightward shift has been accompanied by a massive growth in the country’s Evangelical Protestant and Pentecostal churches, which constitute the greater part of Brazilian Protestantism. The percentage of those who identified as evangelicals in Brazil has grown from 6.6 percent in 1980, to 22.2 percent in 2010.

    ...

Perhaps the clearest articulation of this shift has been the rise of 62-year old military officer-turned-congressman Jair Messias Bolsonaro. In a time when corruption has tarnished Brazil’s political class, his blunt charisma, zeal for law and order, and rapport with Brazil’s evangelicals, have turned what would ordinarily be glaring weaknesses into strengths.

    ...

Bolsonaro’s evangelical supporters continue to back him not so much because of his extreme rhetoric, but because they view him as incorruptible. For Carlos Henrique Bernardes, a member of the Baptist church, Brazilians “don’t have options for ‘clean’ candidates, and Bolsonaro seems to be the only one who’s not corrupt, and that’s what makes him so appealing.” Meanwhile, to broaden his appeal, Bolsonaro has toned down some of his more extreme claims. He has connected with segments of the Brazilian population who feel they have been ignored by their elected officials, according to de Souza Junior. “That might be one of Bolsonaro’s greatest strengths,” Bernardes said. That’s what got Lula elected. And Bolsonaro might benefit from it, too.

    Talk about hyperbole.
Ending affirmative action (read: "positive" discrimination) does not make one a racist.

It's fun to see Brazil worshiping their glorious right-wing military rule. When is the torture going to be back on schedule?

This isn’t the junta. You’re not going to persuade Bolsonaro’s supporters that way.

I'm not interested in persuading them. I'm simply going to watch how it turns out. Brazil was one of the world's fastest growing economies up until a couple years ago. Bolsonaro may prove to be a stabilizing and cleansing force or he may turn out to be another Trump. Lots of bravado with little substance. It'll also be interesting to see whether he restarts the human rights abuses that the right-wing military government was so famous for.

    From your article:

Less than one million people live in those places isolated from the real Brazil,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “They are explored and manipulated by non-profit. Together we will integrate those citizens and give value to all Brazilians.”
This will literally led to a extinction of these indigenous groups as "civilized" diseases will kill them like they did with other indian tribes in the past because of a missing proper immune system.

Seems like a pretty inclusive message to me. If an Australian or American politician didn’t want to give native tribes more land would they be ‘anti-indigenous’?

Mr. Bolsonaro, a former army captain and long-time congressman, said during his presidential campaign that he would stop making what he calls concessions to native Brazilians and Quilombolas.

Bolsonaro, homophobic, racist, misogynist: some pearls of wisdom,
Indigenous and Quilombolas (afro-americans) communities are lazy, he said. "I think they don’t even manage to procreate anymore".
He said that if he had a gay son, he would be unable to love him and “prefer that he die in an accident.”

Bolsonaro speaks nostalgically about the military dictatorship and has a strong military cabinet (five ou four generals). That being said, Bolsonaro appointed an extremely corrupt cabinet.

but nice one, you took the mildest coded expression of his reactionary stance, and used it to adress claims of fascism. i know the right prides itself on their humour, but you really need to work on being actually funny some more.

Is Bolsonaro refusing to give them more land? From the article it seems like he is doing much more than that. Like transferring protected land to be developed for agriculture.

In America that would be like taking Native reservation land away from them and putting it under government control. So yes, it's anti-indegenous.

Why do you post off topic lies in every thread you visit? Affirmitive action doesn't exist in the UK, it's as foreign practice, illegal in Britain.

On topic, I hope this chap is more like Trump , a useless ineffectual buffoon, rather than a Rodrigo Duterte.
