Default Popes - what are they good for ?

I've played mainly as catholic factions in play-testing.
First I played as Portugal and wondered why everyone hated me.
Eventually I worked out that I had been ex-communicated at the start.
Seemed that only dying to end the curse of ex-communication

Other times I start not ex-communicated.
Apart from a crusade called near the beginning of the campaign I've not heard a squeak out of the Pope.
What I did notice was Popes dying and being replaced every 4 or 5 turns.

    Do they do anything ?

I liked the M2TW way of having cardinals and voting for a new Pope.

I don't have Atilla, but from what I understand, based on both MTW and M2TW. A pope is suppose to grant a crusade and as you said a cardinal is voting who is gonna to be the next pope in M2TW, but cardinals also exist in MTW and have no other functions than to increase preaching in a region and act as a diplomat (more known as emissary in MTW), not am I aware of.
Under patronage of General Brewster of the Imperial House of Hader.
