Default Coronavirus outbreak - From China to the World.

I open a thread to discuss about the coronavirus outbreak.

The two videos are interesting to get an overview but they are more pessimistic:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
China reports more than 200 infections with new coronavirus from Wuhan
    Jan. 20, 2020

The outbreak of a new virus that began in the Chinese city of Wuhan last month appears to be far from over. Today, Chinese health authorities reported that more than 130 new pneumonia cases caused by the virus were identified over the weekend, bringing the total in China alone to 201, including three outside of Wuhan. There has also been a third death from the infection, and South Korea has now reported a case as well—the third country outside China to do so.

Meanwhile, the pattern of spread makes it increasingly likely that the virus can transmit between people, some experts say. “Uncertainty and gaps remain, but it’s clear that there is some level of person-to-person transmission,” Jeremy Farrar, head of the Wellcome Trust, said in a statement today.

“The sudden spike in cases is disconcerting, but not entirely unexpected,” says Adam Kamradt-Scott, an infectious diseases specialist at the University of Sydney. As more people learn about the disease, more will go to doctors, Kamradt-Scott says, even with mild symptoms, whereas previously they might have just stayed home. And doctors are now on the lookout for the new disease. “The result is that you see a sudden surge in cases,” he says. But, “If we continue to see this trend continue over the next week where there are 50 to 100 new cases every day, then that would be cause for further concern.”
The outbreak began in mid-December 2019 in Wuhan, a major city and travel hub in central China. Many of the initial patients had worked or shopped at the city’s Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, at which vendors also sold live birds and other animals, suggesting the infection was jumping from animals to humans. By 8 January, Chinese scientists had identified a new member of the coronavirus family as the likely culprit. They soon sequenced and released its genome, allowing scientists worldwide to create diagnostic tests.

One week ago, new cases seemed to be tapering off—but then more patients started to appear. Early on Monday local time, the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission reported identifying 59 new cases on 18 January and an additional 77 on 19 January. One patient died on Saturday, bringing the number of deaths to three. Nine remain critically ill. Authorities separately confirmed that two patients had been identified in Beijing and one in Shenzhen, a major city bordering Hong Kong. Before the new case in South Korea, two travelers from Wuhan were found to be infected in Thailand and one in Japan.

Health authorities worry about further spread of the virus as several hundred million Chinese are expected to travel domestically to visit relatives during the weeklong Lunar New Year festivities, which start on 25 January. Millions are also expected to travel internationally for vacation, with Thailand and Japan being top destinations.

Scientists are still puzzling over whether other markets in Wuhan are involved, and whether the virus can pass from person to person. One of the patients in Thailand reported she had not visited the Huanan market, but she had been to other so-called wet markets. The patient that turned up in Japan after traveling to Wuhan reportedly also said he had never been to the Huanan market.

Other coronaviruses—including the ones that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome—do spread between people. And many scientists say human-to-human transmission of the Wuhan virus cannot be ruled out. But Wuhan health authorities have said they have found no evidence of it so far. They have tracked 817 close contacts of patients, of whom 727 were cleared of illness; the remaining 90 are still under observation. Wuhan authorities have also reported that no health care workers tending to coronavirus patients have become ill, a common occurrence when a new virus with the ability to spread between people emerges. (It is not clear whether authorities have tested patient contacts for antibodies to the virus, which would be a sign that they were infected at some point but recovered.)

“The mode(s) of transmission has not yet been determined and human to human transmission is always a concern when patients have respiratory symptoms, this requires further investigation,” a World Health Organization spokesperson wrote in an email to Science.

The virus does not currently appear to be especially virulent and in the majority of cases has caused mild illness. “This means we need to continue to closely monitor the situation, but not panic,” Kamradt-Scott says.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) posted information for the public about the new disease with colorful, cartoonish graphics showing coronaviruses and bats, apparently in an attempt to quash misinformation on Weibo, a Twitter-like social media site. The China CDC website emphasizes that the disease is not SARS—whose emergence in late 2002 caused a global crisis that many Chinese remember well—and urges people to “not believe five big rumors about the Wuhan viral pneumonia.” Those include claims that the Wuhan pneumonia is caused by a new SARS virus, that the SARS virus is still being found in bats, and that the Wuhan pneumonia may have been affecting people for a long time.

French doctor: Virus from China seems less serious than SARS
    https://medicalxpress.com/news/2020-...hina-sars.html

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The lead doctor treating two Paris hospital patients for the new virus in China said Saturday that the illness appears less serious than comparable outbreaks of the past and that the chance of a European epidemic appears weak at this stage.

French officials on Friday reported three confirmed cases of the newly identified coronavirus in France, the first ones in Europe. The third patient is at a hospital in Bordeaux. The head of France's health department, Jerome Salomon, said Saturday evening that all three are doing "very well."

Still, France remained concerned about its citizens in Wuhan, the now-locked down Chinese city where the outbreak began. France's Foreign Ministry said Saturday that French and Chinese officials were studying "eventual options that would allow our nationals who wish to leave."

The French consulate in Wuhan is in constant contact with citizens, the Foreign Ministry said, without saying how many of them are in the city.

Starting Sunday, medical teams will be at France's airports, notably Paris' Charles de Gaulle, to help passengers arriving from various Chinese cities with questions, concerns or medical needs, health chief Salomon said.

The virus so far has infected more than 1,200 people and killed at least 41. The vast majority of the infections and all the deaths have been in mainland China.

Dr. Yazdan Yazdanpaneh said the two patients at Paris' Bichat-Claude Bernard Hospital are a couple from Wuhan, where the viral respiratory illness first was detected.

The 31-year-old man and 30-year-old woman arrived in France on Jan. 18 without symptoms, but one developed symptoms the next day and the other soon followed, the doctor said.

The two are staying in separate, specially equipped rooms and are doing well, physically and psychologically, Yazdanpaneh said. He could not speculate when they might be released from the hospital. Ways in which the virus can be transmitted remain unclear.

Yazdanpaneh, a leading French expert who heads Bichat's infectious diseases unit, said that cases imported from China were "not a surprise" and that France had prepared, including by developing a test that provides rapid results for suspected cases.

On the other hand, he said, the chance of "an epidemic in France or in Europe is weak, extremely weak."

"This illness is a lot less serious—and we don't say this based on two patients, but talking to our international colleagues—than, for example, SARS," Yazdanpaneh said, referring to the 2002 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed hundreds of people.

The mortality rate for the viral illness identified in China last month is currently thought to be less than 5%, whereas it was double that for SARS, he said.

He said the mers coronavirus in Saudi Arabia also appears more serious than the virus in China.

The man and woman receiving care in Paris were taken to Bichat on Friday morning and tests for the coronavirus were known to be positive by evening, Yazdanpaneh said.

The two rooms where they are being cared for are so-called negative pressure rooms that air enters but cannot escape to guard against transmission. Bichat has seven such rooms.

I don't think there is any way to verify this video, but if true it is very alarming. The nurse is claiming that 90,000 people in Wuhan are infected:

    https://www.americanthinker.com/blog...n_america.html

I also haven't forgotten that there are several hundred thousand Chinese in central Africa and many of them got there illegally and have been going back and forth between China and Africa every six months (railroad workers).

Some of those areas in Africa are experiencing Ebola outbreaks...I need say no more on that.

Also, there are rumors that it is a bio-weapon that got out of a recently constructed bio-lab in the Wuhan province. It is all rumor mill stuff at this point.

The fact remains that China is taking drastic measures to contain this and it doesn't appear to be working. The proverbial cat seems to be out of the bag.

China knows the cat is out of the bag persay. They're taking such drastic measures because the virus can spread before someone realizes they are even sick, much less sick with this virus. So they're locking down the damn city, even region.

There's bound to be people who got infected and left Wuhan and the region for other parts of China. If i'm not mistaken its the Lunar New Year in China which means lots of holiday traffic. Combine how contagious the virus is with the rush of holiday traffic and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.

EDIT: From looking at POVG's link there is indeed confirmed cases throughout China so its going to get a lot worse. It also seems to be spreading around the world as well with new infected in the US and Europe.

Hmmm, it seems there is a recently constructed level 4 biolab in Wuhan. To much to be a co-incidence?

Not a coincidence at all. Rather sensible, in fact. The world ain't exactly Resident Evil. Where else would you construct it but where it seems other outbreaks originated from and where you could get the most work done on figuring it out. Elsewhere the number of confirmed cases are counted on one hand.

    *Yawn*

This is not the pandemic everyone is expecting to happen sooner or later.

Be a great time to travel to China for cheap though.

One must factor in the likelihood that the Politburo kept a lid on information about the outbreak, scale, dangers, etc, until the situation became too severe to control. If unconfirmed reports on the ground are to be believed, the Chinese government is still far from transparent in the information allowed to be published. The proof is in the pudding: it seems unreasonable that the Politburo would lock down whole cities and areas containing millions of people, risking mass panic and confusion, if the situation weren’t of equivalent gravity.
Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII

New report stating that the virus may have not originated in a wet market in Wuhan. Thats not good.

Nothing to worry about. Only 5 million people escaped the city of Wuhan before it was locked down:

Well, that was to be expected....

Also, first case in Germany (Starnberg, south of Munich).

If China's NHC assessment that the virus can spread from person to person before any symptoms appear is correct, this could get fun.

    Yep

The coronavirus patient in Germany has been identified as a 33-year-old German man who works in Starnberg, south of Munich. He had not been to China but was in a meeting with a Chinese national last week, who has since been identified with the coronavirus, Dr. Andreas Zapf, the head of the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food safety said Tuesday.
    Also in Japan

Japan’s health ministry confirmed two additional cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to six.

The sixth patient -- a man in his 60s in western Japan -- has no history of visiting Wuhan, but is a bus driver who drove tour groups from the central Chinese city for nine days, according to the health ministry.

This is the first case of suspected human-to-human transmission in Japan from someone who did not travel to Wuhan.

Breitbart tells the truth this time, although they formulate it like something related to the outbreak.

IT IS NOT. It is related to the lunar new year. But yeah, it makes everything much more complicated.

In the early stages of the SARS, the WHO, etc, estimated the mortality rate at less than 4%, but the estimates were revised upward, with an overall estimate of case fatality of 14% to 15%.
The fatality ratio wasl less than 1% for people younger than 25, 6% for those aged 25 to 44, 15% for those aged 45 to 64, and more than 50% for people 65 or older.

However, the Wuhan virus is more dangerous than the SARS. Why? unlike SARS, the new virus is infectious during its incubation period.Add to that the incubation period, the Wuhan virus can be contagious for as many 14 days before the first clinical symptoms. SARS virus was contagious only when patients have symptoms- such as fever or cough. In fact, no cases of SARS were reported among persons who were exposed to a SARS patient before the onset of the patient's symptoms.
