Default Emperor Batman's Minor and Emergent Factions Unit Mod

I decided to return back to Napoleon Total War but found the minor factions to be very lacking, with few interesting units and many missing ones! I decided to help expand those factions and share them all with you.

What this mod aims to do:
    1. Complete all minor factions' unit rosters to have all basic units (Light Infantry, Dragoons, Guards, etc.)

    2. Give minor factions that already have completed rosters unique units and special AOR units.

    3. Create new and interesting mechanics, playstyles, and designs for the minor factions to give them unique campaigns.

As such, the mod is divided into three parts: Minor Factions (all except Mecklenburg, as I could not find any fitting sources), Emergent Factions, and "Late" Factions (A redesign for a number of factions whose uniforms have changed, including Saxony, Naples, Mecklenburg, Papal States).

The Irish historically yearned for independence from the British, and during the Napoleonic Wars and the wars of the Coalition, they cooperated with the French in a bid for their independence. Therefore, if Ireland were to become an independent state, it would have probably been within Napoleon's orbit of influence, and therefore would have styled their army after the French. I have tried to represent that here.

This mod and the units look excellent! I like the idea of special AAR units and unique units. I enjoy playing as minor factions in Empire and your mod makes me want to try playing as minor factions with Napoleon - and I imagine that this mod would make playing as major factions, flighting against minor factions with these units, more interesting and challenging.

I'm wondering if you'd like to say any more about the mechanics and playstyles which you have in mind for the minor factions, or maybe the idea is that players will discover them for ourselves when we use your mod?

Hello Alwyn, thanks for your support!

I have some ideas on how to give these factions unique attributes and mechanics. While I am still thinking about it and planning it all out, I may use what I have in mind for Switzerland and Greece as examples.

The Swiss Confederation is a historically unique entity, particularly during this period. The idea behind the Swiss would be to divide their roster into three segments; Cantonal Units, Mercenary Units, and Federal Units. Each category will have units of all types (Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery). I believe Spanky developed a similar concept some time ago for the Swiss as well, so I accredit him for those ideas.

Cantonal units are cheaper to train and maintain while being of reasonable fighting quality, as the cantons are financing their equipment and training, rather than you (playing the Federal Assembly leading the faction). They can also be recruited from Civic Administration buildings. However, because the cantons have raised those troops for largely defensive purposes to protect their towns, cities, and fortresses, the troops are unprepared for distant offensive campaigns, and therefore have limited movement points on the campaign. Cantonal units would therefore be best for short-distance offensives and for defending territories of the Swiss.

Mercenary units are high quality, but expensive (disproportionately so) and limited in number, but can move around the campaign at the same rate as normal armies. I am considering the idea that they may need to be recruited out of special town buildings like Supply Depots instead of the barracks.

The player may then research a tech, "Federalization of the Swiss," which allows the creation of a Federal Swiss Army by unlocking federal units. Units in the "federal" category have the advantages of both prior categories without their drawbacks - their price is decently scaled with units from the base game, but they are high-quality troops and they may freely move around the campaign map. The Federalization tech would also grant economic bonuses like higher tax-rates. However, it comes at the price of a steep public order penalty among the Upper-Class, representing the rulers of the Cantons who feel their autonomy is in danger of being taken away by concentrating power in Bern. I think it would also be interesting if that tech could trigger an immediate rebellion - essentially an acceleration of events that led to the Sonderbund War of 1847.

The other example of a special faction would be Greece. In this case, the Greeks start the game only being able to recruit a handful of relatively low-quality revolutionary units, representing the armed bands that ignited the Greek War of Independence in 1821, dressed in traditional Greek outfits. However, the player has access to special techs that first unlock foreign volunteers to help the revolt, and then another tech representing Military Westernization that grants them access to a European-style unit roster with line infantry, dragoons, and other such troops.

I'm happy to take any other ideas or suggestions. These changes are new territory for me when it comes to modding, but I would like to challenge myself and see how to implement these ideas!

    How about Romania?

I always liberate Romania from the Ottomans when playing Russia.

I don't think NTF has Romania as an emergent faction.

I was actually thinking of Romania alongside Hungary and Poland for the next batch of factions. I have already begun some preliminary research on the region during the Napoleonic Wars to get an idea of what that faction might look like.

That's not a bad idea, but I think Poland could be a problem since Poland didn't existed at that time.

In fact, it did though, as the Duchy of Warsaw, a Napoleonic satellite state. For Hungary, I am taking inspiration from the 1848 Revolution and the Hungarian troops in the Habsburg Army during the Napoleonic Wars.

Romania is the real challenge, as a Romanian state didn't exist until the 1870s. For them, I am largely relying on Vlach and Szekeler troops who served in the Austrian Army.

The first thing I would do is check whether you were using the UPC loc file which came with the Irish pack. Let me know if you have tried that and it doesn't work. You may also try the Scottish UPC pack as well.

As an update: I wanted to get the Central European unit sets out a few weeks ago, but because of the quarantine, I have gone home to my family and so I'm away from my computer with all the tools. The Hungarian roster is pretty much done, it just needs unit cards, unit names, and descriptions. When I had to leave my city, I was trying to figure out the best atlas to remake for Romania but I otherwise have the faction concept down and know what I want to do. I also have Poland's concept planned out. I hope to get these done when I return back to my city in late June.

When i pressed on the "Ireland" download link it just downloaded the "EB_Emergent_Factions_Ireland.pack" file, couldn't see any UPC pack. Having only that activated the unit names don't appear. I tried with the UPC activated and also with the main minor factions mod but still none of the units have names with the exception of the artillery, cuirassiers and dragoons. I downloaded the scottish mod as well and they dont have names either.

yeah its still not working. When i download the irish/scottish file i dont get a upc pack with it. Tried the mods on their own, with and without upc and the main minor factions mod and i still cant get the unit names on any of the irish/scottish infantry and some of the cav.

You do not need to activate the UPC file in Mod Manager or user.script. You may have another mod's localization file also in the data folder, which you would need to remove to somewhere else before getting the names from Minor Factions.

The names which do appear are those of vanilla units which I have simply added to the factions, hence why they are appearing because they are already cataloged in the localization file that comes with the base game.

I am back at my primary computer with all my tools, and only now did I realize that I forgot to include an updated localization file for the mod. Anyway, I've uploaded that now, and apologies and thank you for the patience!

I also plan on completing the Hungary pack soon, just need to add names and unit cards.

Ladies and gentlemen, I proudly present Hungary as the latest Emergent Faction roster expansion! Check out the OP for details.

Additionally, the UPC which comes with Hungary is the most up-to-date and has the names and descriptions for Hungarian units as well as all units from the Minor Factions mod, plus Ireland and Scotland.

Default Re: Emperor Batman's Minor and Emergent Factions Unit Mod

    Hello everyone!

I have a new mini-update out that adds a few new units to Sardinia and reworked some units such as Guards, Marines, and Carabinieri for better historical accuracy, as I found some new sources. Meanwhile, I've also fixed the missing UI icon for Oldenburg Dragoons, for the infinitely rare instance they ever get the capability to build those units. I also finally remembered to add a screenshot of Wurttemberg's Mounted Jägers - they've always had the unit in the mod, but noew they are represented in the OP.

I will be restarting on Emergent Factions soon, with Poland coming up next.
