Is there an easy/simple way to change the titles of agents in the game for individual factions, or is this tricky? I seem to remember EB2 calls their Roman spies "exploratores" or somesuch, and on that basis I was going to try renaming Byzantine merchants "Kommerkarioi"- can it be done?

    very easy - in expanded.txt change the line {EMT_BYZANTIUM_SPY}

post the file here so that I can change it as well.

I've included your description of Romaioi as well. use \n\n not \n\ (this produces error)

Great. I'm trying to get changed titles for the other agents too. Bishops should be "Episkopos".

Remember to delete the related .strings.bin file to let the game regenerate one updated with your changes

Will do! I assume any such changes won't be savegame compatible?

So, I take it the "Spatharii tou Vasileos" are replaced by the Vestiaritai.
I notice certain troop types that were present in CBUR are not here.
I will certainly miss the javelin armed light cavalry.
The other thing that I believe should be there is a moderately barded heavy cavalry.
This roster takes the ERE army from unprotected horses directly to Kataphract ones.

    Anyway, that's just my opinion,

You can not make upgrades on horses without using a slot for the unit in the EDU unfortunately.
For now, it stays that way. If we managed to get free slots unused in the future, we may consider that option

There is an alternative that I use in my sub-mod:
make an EDU for each period in which we attribute horses compatible with historical credibility.
However, this requires a little manipulation every period.

    I don't know what a .batch is ...

No, I do not use a .batch because I have no computer skills and work with DOS.
My method is very simple and it is explained here: KCC0.9.4

A .batch file allows you to do automatically what you do in your mod.
I don't like that kind of things because you need to exit the game, make the change and restart the game.

As promised... some useful Byzantine text for the next build!

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    {town_hall_greek}House of the Krites
{town_hall_greek_desc}Though most peasants would consider the imperial authorities to be a royal pain in the backside, the reality is that without Rōmanía’s centralised administration, the empire would have fallen long ago. This building serves as the headquarters of the Krites, or local judge. From here, the local Praktika, the land taxation register, is administered. As a trained specialist in Roman law, the Krites is also responsible for ensuring the settlement and its hinterland is run with some sense of order, something even the peasants would begrudgingly admit they need.
{town_hall_greek_desc_short}The local Krites (judge) helps maintain law and order, as well as reducing squalor.

    {council_chambers_greek}House of the Strategos
{council_chambers_greek_desc}As this town develops in military importance, it has become the headquarters of the local Strategos or general. The Strategos brings with him more money and military strength from Constantinople, to better enforce the decisions of the Krites and his local administrators like the epoptai who run the land register, and the hated dioiketai who collect taxes. A well oiled imperial civil service in this region also allows for more public works to improve health and sanisation.
{council_chambers_greek_desc_short}The local Strategos (general) helps to maintain law and order, as well as reducing squalor.

    {city_hall_greek}Headquarters of the Doux
{city_hall_greek_desc}This town is blossoming into the major regional settlement, and has become the headquarters of the local Doux or Duke, a senior regional military commander who commands several Strategoi. Though its primary role is still to serve as a court of law and to collect tax, if it didn’t provide a home to the Empire’s various civil departments, the entire place would probably degenerate into fetid squalor.
{city_hall_greek_desc_short}The headquarters of the Doux does much to maintain law and order, as well as reduce urban squalor.

    {mayors_palace_greek}Imperial Palace
{mayors_palace_greek_desc}An Imperial Palace represents the final frontier in terms of ensuring that the people of a great city don’t forget just who is in charge. This region has become so important that the Emperor has placed its administration under the control of a direct family member, who may bear the title Despot or Kaisar (Caesar). From the palace, the interests of Rōmanía can be directly maintained.
{mayors_palace_greek_desc_short}An Imperial Palace does wonders to help maintain law and order, and also reduces squalor considerably.

    Hey there!
I can't wait for the 0.97 !!! As I will definitely start with ERE - the overhauled units by nikossaiz will be included in the upcoming version? (though I know its not finished yet - nothing is written about the updated ERE roaster in the released 0.97 preview)

    Regards

The idea is to make version 0.9.7 stable. Then, and only then, will the units of Nikossaiz be integrated. It will be with version 0.9.8.

In the next patch (E) to v. 097 there'll be a special mechanism for the ERE - The Paleologian Renaissance.

If the Byzantines have lost Constantinople (this may happen to eg. jihad) but held Nikaia, and later they re-conquered Constantinople, and they have built 5 Ikoners Studios (in large cities), the event will fire and the Ikonerst Studios will provide more public order than before, making it easier to keep the cities under control.

    Code:
        ;------------------- Byzantine Renaissance ---------------------------------
; important: this part of script should be before part that resets counter FL_is_crowned_ruler

        monitor_event SettlementTurnStart SettlementName Constantinople

      		and I_CompareCounter ai_ec_id > 1 ; but not to a rebellion

      		and I_CompareCounter ai_ec_id = 17 ; Constantinople is Byzantine
            and I_CompareCounter number_ikoner_studio_built > 4 ; art was supported in the meanwhile
            and EventCounter FL_is_crowned_ruler = 1 ; emperor is crowned

{BYZANTINE_RENAISSANCE_ALLOWED_TITLE}Byzantine Art in Transition{BYZANTINE_RENAISSANCE_ALLOWED_BODY}Centuries of continuous Roman political tradition and Hellenistic civilization underwent a crisis in 1204 with the sacking of Constantinople by the Venetian and French knights of the Fourth Crusade. During their half-century of exile, the last great flowing of Anatolian Hellenism began. As Nicaea emerged as the center of opposition under the Laskaris emperors, it spawned a renaissance, attracting scholars, poets, and artists from across the Byzantine world. A glittering court emerged as the dispossessed intelligentsia found in the Hellenic side of their traditions a pride and identity unsullied by association with the hated "latin" enemy. After the recapture of the capital in 1261 the Renaissance started to blossom in the whole empire./n/nSTRATEGY: To start the pan-empire Renaissance of arts, Byzantium must re-capture the great city of Constantinople, the emperor must be crowned, and the faction must build at least 5 Ikoner Studios. Once it happens, Byzantium the Ikoners Studiow will start providing higher public order benefits.

{BYZANTINE_RENAISSANCE_STARTED_BODY}With the recapture of the capital in later 13th century, Byzantine artists developed a new interest in landscapes and pastoral scenes, and the traditional mosaic-work (of which the Chora Church in Constantinople is the finest extant example) gradually gave way to detailed cycles of narrative frescoes (as evidenced in a large group of Mystras churches). The icons, which became a favoured medium for artistic expression, were characterized by a less austere attitude, new appreciation for purely decorative qualities of painting and meticulous attention to details, earning the popular name of the Paleologan Mannerism for the period in general./n/nIMPACT ON GAMEPLAY: Ikoners Studios provide higher public order.

    Like it!

I know this is something we discussed previously. I'm playing an EB2 campaign with the Seleukids, where your FL is encouraged to spend as many winter turns as possible in Seleukeia to celebrate the Akitu festival, with public order penalties in the Mesopotamian provinces if the festival is missed too often. Could the script be replicated to encourage you to keep your FL regularly in Constantinople to preside over the major court events of the year?
