Why is it so difficult to watch and control battles now?

Old RTW player and modder here. I started having to pause a lot during battles in BC and other M2TW mods in order to figure out where my soldiers are and what they're doing. Now with Rome 2 I can't even understand the unit cards anymore. They look pretty close-in but from a distance it's like a huge mess of all colors and lights and indicators everywhere make it more confusing. Is there some setting or mod people can recommend to have normal battles back?

Update: I see Attila seems to have normal unit cards back. Is it easier to control in general? I don't care about the vanilla setup but only the mods.
