    Default Southern Campaign (Tripoli)

With his father at Jerusalem, Bertrand was left in command of the small County of Tripoli, which hugged the coastline between the Principality of Antioch to the North and what likely would become the fourth and last Crusader state in the south. After speaking with his father's commanders, two targets seemed ripe for the taking. The port of Botron, and an inland located called Buissera were right across the border to the south. Soon, Bertrand, leaving a garrison of 1,000 men to police the County of Tripoli, departs southward for Botron first, taking four thousand men and a number of nobles that made up the forming nobility of Tripoli.

As Bertrand made his way south to Botron, a couple messengers from Tripoli arrived, bearing dispatches from two sources. Along the coast, the regent of Tripoli examined the two letters sent. One was from a fortress, called Balanatos, likely its commander or lord, and the other was from his father's rival, Prince Bohemond of Antioch. The former desired protection from the Prince of Antioch who had advanced along the coast, south, to Laodice, and claimed that the Prince sought to expand even further south. The latter requested assistance against Balanatos and would respect a border, of sorts, between Tripoli and Antioch. A map was requested and local guides presented it, letting Bertrand learn of where Balanatos was located.

Balanatos was a castle situated closer to Antioch. Though the coast was the safest route, it was a longer one and would take time for him to send troops to either party. The more direct route went through Saracen infested lands and the only known river would present an issue to an army if sent. It brought them within proximity to Homs, which the local guides said had a sizable army and would likely get irritated at the sight of a crusading army across the river. Looking at both letters, he decides not to aid Balanatos, send a correspondence back to Bohemond, but at the same time, use the opportunity to expand north, quickly.

The army, halfway between Botron and Tripoli, diverts back north and follows the coast toward Valenia and Gabula.

The Army of Tripoli arrived before the settlement of Valenia. A horsemen rode out before the contingent of 4,000 men, demanding that the city surrender to County of Tripoli. Surrender was presented as the most peaceful option to the defenders and the citizens for the Count of Tripoli would want to ensure the integrity of the city as a port and as a part of the realm. If surrender is accepted, strict law would be enforced and none will be harmed. The horsemen circles before the gates, stating the words of the Regent of Tripoli, Bertrand.

The city is willing to surrender if they are guaranteed a safe retreat for everyone who wishes so, including the local elite.

Bertrand, after speaking with his commanders, agrees to the terms of the city and is willing to allow those who desire to leave to have safe passage from Valenia.

The local nobility sends word to Gabula to shore up defenses and that Valenia has fallen. Others send word to the Emir's host, known to be moving on Balatonos. The Garrison of Valenia tries to link up with the Emir.

OOC: Might be subjected to some change.

The Tripoli Army, after ensuring Valenia is secure and a nobleman placed to rule over them, moves northward towards the final northern target, Gabula.

Gabula is heavily fortified. With large stocks able to last a very long time. The commander is open to a parley.

While the Tripoli Army assembles before Gabula, the regent of Tripoli, with some other leading nobles, comes forth to meet with the commander for an agreeable parley.

Commander of Gabula, allow me to offer you a substantial opportunity.

Bertrand points at the fortified location.

Have your city integrate into the County of Tripoli and I will see to it that you are ennobled. You will not be some mere commander, but a noble of the County of Tripoli. Your descendants will have the fortune you build in the service to my father and, one day, myself as Count of Tripoli. Your children will be respected as nobles, looked to as leaders by Gabula, and rule as aristocrats under the banner of Tripoli.

His horse snorts slightly, making Bertrand pat the side of its mane. His steed was likely hungry for oats or just didn't like being idle. He looks up at the commander.

In return, I only ask that you convert to God. This is a rare opportunity, commander. I ask for little and you gain much. The choice is yours.

In recognition of this, Bertrand has the Arabic commander kneel before him and knights him as a gesture of his promise. Later that day, a priest from the Tripoli army, baptizes the convert and has him be raised up as Sir Pierre (Peter) of Gabula. A feast is held in celebration the following day and Sir Peter is installed as Gabula's leader. The day after, Bertrand convenes with his nobles and commanders to decide the next step.

Bertrand departs south, from Gabula with his army of 4,000 men, and heads towards Botron to secure it and another possession in that area.

    ===================

(Since I will arrive before I wake up tomorrow, posting this up ahead of time)

When the Tripoli Army approaches Botron, the massive army begins setting up for a siege while a horseman rides forth. The messenger demands the submission of the city, but also offers the chance of parley. The messenger also relays the news of Gabula and Valenia having fallen, peacefully, to the army, led by the regent of Tripoli, Bertrand of Toulouse, in order to magnify the ability of their leader and the strength of their presence.

An emissary arrives from the camp of the Prince of Antioch. Bohemond informs the Count of Tripoli that he has agreed peace and friendship with the Emir of Homs, and any act of aggression against the latter would also result in war with Antioch.

Terms are offered by Bertrand to integrate with Tripoli as her citizens and have their lives continue as they are or that those desiring to leave may do so while those desiring surrender will be given a peaceful transition for their surrender. Otherwise his army will be forced to attack.

Bertrand orders the construction of a ram (9 hours) and three light ladders (6 hours) for the siege of Botron. He is confident that his numbers will win him the day and gain control of the city soon enough. He divides the army into three sections; 1,000 men for the southern and eastern groups with himself commanding 1,000 men to the north. A reserve, placed between the northern and eastern groups, numbering 1,000, is situated and encamped.
