This video explains it quite good. In every case the AI agents have a greater chance of success and the AI got more money in the campaign.

pretty sure the battle bonuses (2:07) are wrong

I like to play at the highest difficulty level. But i wouldn't play at legendary. i prefer at very hard just in case I make any accidental mistake ( something I didn't intend to do ) or forget something. For that reason, it is better to manually save your campaign
