A Total War Saga: TROLLY FAQ

A Total War Saga: TROLL… TROLLY will reconstruct one of the greatest stories ever told. Inspired by Homer’s Iliad, and having nothing to do with it, TROLLY will let you forge a heroic legacy in the late Broken AI (BA – right before CA….Condemned Ashamebly), the furthest back in time the Total War franchise has ever travelled. Possibly the biggest change to the real-time battles is the absence of horses. Aside from chariots and the occasional centaur, horses don't really feature in fights at all. Historically, they were status symbols or used for transportation. This historical limitation has forced Creative Assembly Sofia to reconsider combat and give infantry more to do.

There are flanking and anti-flanking abilities, soldiers can switch between different weapons or stances, and the environment now throws more obstacles in their way, including muddy ground that slows them down. Maybe your troops will get stuck in the mud, making them an easy target, but then you order them to switch from two-handed spears to a spear and shield stance, offering them more protection at the cost of some damage.
Now we are speaking. This is exactly what I would like to see. Enviroment playing bigger role, formations, stances making finally sense...

-Look like release day is not totally fixed.
-game is being done by Sofia team
    -Agents are back
-map is Aegean, size comparable to R2
    -really 8 starting factions

Heroes will be able to undertake their own epic quests beyond the campaign goals. Odysseus, for instance, gets to go on his infamous Odyssey, taking him to Troy and back again as he fights off his wife's suitors. Completing these quests will net heroes with legendary weapons and other benefits, like Odysseus' son joining the fray as a new hero.
Instead of amassing loads of cash, you'll need to procure a variety of resources to keep your empire ticking. Wood is needed for buildings, and eventually stone, and if you start running a deficit, don't expect buildings to stay standing. Soldiers, on the other hand, need food and bronze. The rarest and most valuable resource is gold, which can be used to barter with other factions or from visiting foreign traders.
A larger number of specialised settlements will help you keep your stores full, though other factions will also be eyeing them up. Some sources can also be depleted, so you'll need to be the first to exploit them if you want all the gold or wood.

So Creative Assembly drooped not one but two trailers for the next Total War Saga: Troy. What did you think of it?

"A Total War Saga: TROY is the first in the award-winning strategy series to focus on the Bronze-Age Mediterranean and the legendary twenty-year conflict between the kingdoms of Troy and Mycenaean Greece, known as the Trojan War."

This video is my analysis of the two trailers that Creative Assembly has published for the new game in the Total War Saga franchise, Troy. These are the campaign map trailer and the Cinematic trailer. They feature the mythical and historical characters like Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysseus, Hektor(Hector), Paris as well as hint's to Greek gods like Zeus and mount Olympus. I expect low faction and unit verity, but high detail on the map as well as unit armors and weapons. Hero units will play a large role just like in TW Three Kingdoms. And I expect that with the marketing slogan "EPIC battle in a world of gods and monsters" we might see more then just warriors of man.

Here is my reaction and analysis, in case you are interested.

Because Wh2/3K are most profitable TWs so far? Because Wh3 in production? Looks like characters/heroes were great change. I would like too Empire 2 but given my prediction above, not soon then 2023 in case next tentpole game is Empire2 and not Med3. And judging from CA latest detest for water (Wh1+2,3k,ToB,Troy no clue about Wh3), any TW with heavy emphasis on naval combat is at risk. Because so say the numbers...

For the first time since Attila, I'm interested in a TW games (Warhammer, Thrones of Britannia and 3K are not my thing). However, I'm a little disappointed with the naval battles. I would prefer to autoresolve them (just like in Rome 1 and Med 2), rather than see both armies disembarking to fight on land.

There is a lot of potential in Renaissance and in the Thirty Years' War. I hope to see those periods featured in a TW game in a near future.

I'm not all that impressed, and probably will not be getting this game. Do people like these quasi-fantasy games now, or is CA losing touch with their old fanbase?

I'm a bit disappointed by the fact that Grace did not confirm the existence of a "Records" mode. If duels cannot be toggled off, CA should probably brace itself from the minority that prefers strictly historical titles, without the inclusion of superhuman protagonists.

Wut. Since the small island of Lemnos is neither famous for its deserts nor can it be possibly located in the extremity of the Saga's map, is there any chance that Creative Assembly made a mistake?
Just search up "Lemnos Desert". The island of Lemnos does in fact contain a desert, one of only two deserts in Europe apparently. Also I see no reason why Lemnos would not be on the map for this game.

I'm also kinda getting tired of the heroes and legends stuff. I have no interest in three kingdoms, but I do love warhammer. Warhammer is specific since it's simply fantasy. But mixing fantasy and history? Not a big fan of that. It's definitely great that new mechanics are being developed, old ones are being fixed and improved etc., but when will the merging of the two types stop? I know that in TK you don't have to play with heroes enabled. But still effort is made to make the heroes, their abilities and what not. Just seems like wasted energy and resources.

I loved age of mythology, but never really thought "oh boy I wish there was this kind of a game in total war". They are simply different types of RTS. Warhammer did prove taht CA is more than capable of making fantasy, but I just wish if the returned to their roots a bit. Maybe they realized it's just not worth it anymore to make your standard sandbox RTS games.

I know, it's about money always. The more you earn, the better. I do miss the time where game companies actually made art like games. Now it's about how much they earn. For me TW lost it's source. It's now about "what earns the most", so let us mix fantasy with history. Why not using R2TW and make kind of an expansion like a Troy game. I bet modders make the game better, because they actually do care what they make and wane make art (if they at least make GOOD modding tools). Well...i guess those times are over. I will make my own masterpiece mod with Fall of the Samurai (Victoria TW with a world map).

Same here. I guess since CA sold itself to sega, things changed (and with all the older developers leaving the company).

Pretty sure that private, profit-seeking companies always aimed at money and not artistic expression. My relationship with the Total War franchise has been irreparably damaged by the release of Empire and Rome II, but I don't really imagine that business practices in 2004 or 2006 were more benevolent (with the exception being the absence of micro-transactions and DLCs). The crux of the matter and the conflict of interests between customers and developers always concerns the fragile balance between the quality of the product and its cost. I'd say that Creative Assembly dropping the ball in this regard was the primary reason behind Throb's disappointment. I understand your complaints, but it seems to me more of a case about changing tastes, in comparison to the mainstream approach. Heroic duels sell and the popularity of Brad Pitt films will be guaranteed for our generation, at least. If Troy fails commercially, then there's a great chance that CA will abandon this fusion of fantasy and history, in favour of either keeping them separate or concentrating exclusively on the former.

Nice find, although it's one, not several, and could probably be hardly classified as a desert. I didn't say that the island of Lemnos will not be featured in the map, but that it doesn't represent any geographical extremity. There's Thrace in the North and the coast of Asia Minor in the East. I guess CA chose Lemnos, because the particularity of the sand dunes sounded quite exotic.
Anyway, in terms of playable factions, Odysseus, Agamemnon, Achilles, Menelaus and Hector have already been confirmed. Assuming that the goal is an equal representation of Trojans and Achaeans, the remaining four will probably be Trojan allies. Aeneas is also certain, while the remaining slots will probably be filled by Sarpedon and Penthesilea. Guys like Nestor, Ajax, Memnon and Rhesus will be added, in my opinion, at a later stage, with Idomeneus (after all Crete is included) or Philoctetes also having strong chances.

    Age of Mythology TW 3D!

I'll miss the beautiful spread out cities of Rome 2 and Attila as now we'll get Lord of the Rings-like settlements looking like walled castles, ugly and flashy looking fantasy armour and shields (helmets too).

How about some decent spread out settlements with houses and buildings outside the walls?

How about some beautiful primitive primitive looking cuirasses and shields, dirty and over used, a mix of wood and metals and whatnot?

How about a Technology research like the Thracian horsemen where we can finally train some elite horsemen.

It's the Era of Troy damnit, speculate. CA chooses the colourful flashy armour like from Warhammer over cavalry and naval battles "because we have no records of them". You don't have records of min 95% of things you're including in Troy, yet you leave out the few fun parts left of a true Total War game.

Who the hell hired these guys? TW is dead since 10 years now. Now we're stuck with Fortnite mentality staff making games for the 12 year olds.

I have a job and I can afford to pre-order any real historical TW game on the spot, I dont need to beg my parents to buy me a holiday gift. CA should finally focus on us too xD

Kudos for tackling the numerous Chinese with that ugly 3K title and making money out of it. Too bad CA didn't include "flying warriors with retarded expressions" too.

P.s.: I ain't playing this game until Divide et Impera team puts their hands on it and makes it worth it, and I'm talking at least 5th century BC or later. No point playing without hoplites, phalanx, and cavalry. Still no naval battles but maybe CA will feel guilty enough to give the community some tools and let us do as we wish while they focus on Warhammer 6, Narnia TW, Naruto TW, some more Viking or Britain focused bllsht, etc.

I want a low percentage chance of Odysseus getting lost for 10 turns every time he leaves a settlement.

EDIT: Jeez, so much hate for a mini-title game that hasn't even come out yet. It's not going to be a full game, and like Britannia it's probably going to be more of an experimentation with different campaign mechanics. Though I am not a fan of "hero units", at least in Troy it makes sense. Let them cut their teeth more on optimizing a new engine before giving us Empire 2 or Medieval 3.
