    Default Error: "Fatal Graphics Error"

    Hi there.

Recently, Medieval 2: Total War started crashing with this error message: "Fatal Graphics Error: This is usually caused bu having your settigns too high.. etc"

I know for sure my system can handle it on medium-high settings (what I play on), the specs are:

    AMD Athlon64 3500+ Socket AM2
    512MB DDR2 RAM
    Palit GeForce 7600GT PCI-E
    Seagate 80GB SATA hard drive

I would be playing from anywhere between 10 and 40 minutes and the game will first stop, then I would hear the 'beep' that comes with the error message, although sometimes, the message wouldn't be visible because the game screen would be stuck there, blocking out the desktop. At the times the game does close fully, I can go into task manager and the status of M2 is 'not responding'. If I try to launch the game without rebooting, it refuses to start with an "unspecified" error.

I do have the latest graphics and chipset drivers installed, so I don't think the problem lies there.

Oh and the problem happened with both patched and unpatched M2:TW.

Any help is very, very appreciated guys.

    Thanks.

Im startin to get this error as well, never got it before. I think this may be due to overheating, as it's summer here in Aus, and the room temp is like 38 degrees.

G'day mate! I'm just across the ditch here!

No I'm 100% sure its not overheating since I'm using the Speedfan program to monitor temperatures, and nothing is overheating.

Not sure what sound card, I'll look into that, though I'm sceptical that the sound card is the issue.

Ok I fixed mine, don't know if it'll work for ya but here's what I tried:

Delete the medieval preferences file. Change your battle resolution, save & quit. Open game, turn off Vsync, save and quit. Now try playing a battle using the save game file that is causing the crashes. If it works, then you can turn Vysnc back on if you want.

Can you explain that a little bit more precisely?

What is the preferences file? In what should I change my battle resolution?

What should be in that folder??? I found a folder named preferences with three data: player, advice, key... Is this the right one?
