Thread: Question about export_desc_buildings

  1. #1

    Default Question about export_desc_buildings

I want to remove a unit from the ownership of a faction in the edu. For example, I want to remove Latin Handgunners from Byzantine ownership in the edu so that I can use it for another faction. If I don't also remove that unit (in this case Latin Handgunners) from the Byzantine faction in the export_desc_buildings file, could that cause a crash during gameplay?

Roland searched the continent for the man who'd done him in
He found him in Mombasa in a barroom drinking gin
Roland aimed his Thompson gun. He didn't say a word
But he blew Van Owen's body from there to Johannesburg

    It will create an error.

But if you want to assign that unit to another faction as well then you do not need to remove other ownership first. There is a tutorial about 'adding a unit to another faction' if memory serves.

    Edit: yup, here it is.

Thanks Gigantus, but I already well know how to do all of that in the tutorial above - I've done it all literally hundreds of times.

But you say there will be an error if I don't remove the unit from faction x in the descr_buildings file if I have already removed it from ownership for faction X in the edu file. And by "error", you mean the game will play, but there could be a crash later? Are you sure, because I don't think I've always gone to that extra step, and I don't think my game has crashed. I've always wanted to ask and be sure about that though as at times I have gone to the extra step as well.

The reason I ask is not that it is so difficult to remove the unit from faction X in the descr_buildings file; it is not. But only because I often make changes like this and then change things back to their original state later, and could over time easily lose track of what I have and haven't done in the descr_buildings file. And so if it wouldn't cause a crash if I don't remove the unit from faction X in the descr_buildings file, then I simply wouldn't worry about dong that.

I do know there will be an error message in the log pertaining to it, I am however not sure if it will cause a crash, eg when the unit is being trained or created.

I can understand your issue with back and forth editing, you may however run into the very same problem if you do not completely reverse edits. The best way to avoid this is to simply copy the pertaining recruitment line and comment it. Then remove the faction (in case of multiple faction) from the uncommented line.
Adding comments to the top of the EDB (any text file you work with) as reminders will help as well.

Yes, comments must be the safest way to go. Thanks again!
