Its mostly just an eerie horror movie, with similar intent as the Wicker Man really, based upon neopagan rituals, I saw the movie recently and thought it rather odd.

I had the impression that it could not only be a scary movie, I also read vague references in film reviews to the topics I mentioned in the op (mourning, revenge, how to face a break). That said, maybe when I saw the movie I missed some of this (subtext is called?) because the director really didn't get his goal.
