    Default Close Phalanx Formation?

    Hey everyone...
    I can't find any such thread regarding this so I apologize if this is a duplicate.

    Is there any mod compatible with DEI that uses a closer phalanx formation?

    Pixelated Apollo's video here appears to have really tight phalanx formations on either side.
    When I play the game I'm seeing much looser spacing. Is there anything that resembles Phalangitis' Hellenika mod within DEI?

    I would certainly use that! In general I'm very satisfied with how hoplites and pikes work in DEI now, but the looser spacing is one thing that I always notice (I played Hellenika pretty much exclusively until DEI 1.2 came out) If it doesn't already exist, I might take a crack at making such a submod. Though some things I would want to understand first would be:

    a) could the spacing be changed for all hoplite units at once? If so, would this also impact pike units, since they use the same animation? If not, I figure this would mean changing the spacing of all hoplite units one by one in the DB tables.

    b) I recall reading in other threads that spacing impacts the fighting abilities of units, and that the engine favors looser spacing- could making Hoplite units fight in closer formation have the impact of making them perform worse against non-phalanx units?

    you have two valid points mate. I really don't know anything about modding so I have no idea how much of an operation that would be. Hopefully it wouldn't require a tweak of every phalanx unit in the game.

    I haven't played enough DEI to say how much a tighter formation decreases fighting ability against non phalanx units. Perhaps someone in the DEI team could comment about that?

    I am still an exclusive Hellenika player but craving something new!

    Current spacing is to prevent funny soldier sliding since if you make it closer, they will constantly push eachother around, which in turns forces them to switch animation from idle to walking constantly.

    Now if you decrease entiry size (virtual size of model), you can get them closer without animation bug BUT you will make them a lot stronger, especially when out of phalanx as it makes them smaller than other units. For example, it would make them worse when in phalanx formation and weaker when in phanlanx formation. Or if you would order charge, they would go through the enemy unit and butcher them.

    We used to have overall a bit smaller entity size in the past so above was not an issue since all infantry had it but it caused other problems.

    Yes I don't think the pikes need it as much as the regular hoplites.

    Thanks for explaining the spacing KAM! I may try tweaking just the spacing and seeing how intrusive the animation bug is for me, but messing with the entity size sounds like a can of worms I should leave closed. And don't worry nhvanputten, I have no interest in changing anything about pikes!

    There is a new mod on steam workshop that seems to have loved this problem , but im not sure if the mod is compatible with DEI.

    That does not solve the problem and we have a bit better and more balanced version in DeI for few years.
