I am of course not playing it on easy. I can't remember which difficulty I set, but it was medium or hard (but certainly not very hard). I may be new to the franchise, but I ain't no baby!

That was semi-intentional. I saw that error just after posting, decided not to change it because it made it perfect.

To give you some spoiler free context: Shani, btw., is a character you meet in Witcher 1, where she's quite important. In the HOI-dlc you meet her again, and she was expertly well done, especially for players like me, who still remembered her from the first game, whereas she wasn't in the second.

The screens where from when I ran past that house and by accident pressed E, which made me see the sign.
"OH! Shani! "
Then the disappointment when I noticed the door was locked. Uh.
Then the happiness when I by accident pressed W and ran through the door and saw all those patients inside.
Then the ultimate heartbreaking disappointment when she wasn't in the upper floor.

She was perhaps the better character. If I remember correctly, I went with Triss. Mostly because she was featured in the intro, and I'd heard she'd also be a major character in the later games, and because I agreed more with Triss' approach when it came to raising Alwin. But Shani was also just so well done, as she is in the Hearts of Stone DLC. Which arguably is the better DLC of the two and probably the one with the best storyline in the entire game (the bloody baron one is also good).

This is one of the core strengths of CDPR: The relationship you build with those side characters. So many girls. Shani & Triss even look somewhat similar. And yet they are all so different and the player can't help but be invested in them. And in Witcher 3, Geralt arguably isn't even the main character in some regards. He's the sideshow. The girls run it and make the decisions for him. None of them will abandon their plans because of him. He can only choose whose path he wants to follow. And that decision is so hard!
