"the California Department of Education’s (CDE) proposed new mathematics framework will aim to reduce achievement gaps by limiting the availability of advanced mathematical courses"
How on earth limiting those that do well from accessing advanced courses is seen as a good thing?
It is clear that CDE aims for "Golden mediocrities" so that under-achievers won't be left behind, because everyone will be left behind. Instead of try to help the under-achievers, you cut the wings from the above-average.
    That's ... devolution.

Back in early 1900s kids had to learn Latin and Greek as part of basic school curriculum. Now high school graduates can read and write and maybe count. I love Progress!

Now, I was terrible at math in school and still am bad at it, but I never looked at the kids in AP Calc and wished that they weren’t successful.

We live in an age where the left looks for easy solutions to any problem. Their attitude here shows that they have given up on helping minority students who can’t seem to get ahead, while also wasting away any sort of investment into our future.

I’m not sure the people pushing this stuff have “given up” on some lofty ideal per se. The mentality has always been about punishment for collective “sin,” even if that means cutting down those “adjacent” to it. That is the ideal.

Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII

But they will be nevertheless happy to tell you endlessly about the white sins of American like the Chinese Exclusion Act and the internment camps for Japanese-Americans during World War II.

Is this better than storming the capitol hill? Yes. Should we still laugh at the snowflakes that required their universities to provide therapy dogs and hot cocoa so they could process the loss of 2016? Of course.

I think need to provide therapy dogs and cocoa to students and media pretending that mostly peaceful capitol hill protests were like a "terrorist attack" are part of the same problem.

If you read the article a Japanese person was banned because he said the word run in his language. Another user was banned for using the word "black" in his native language (Spanish). And more. Read the article.

    I wonder:
    - What happens if my collegue from Germany (his name is literally the N-word) , tries to play that game.
    - What happens if someone is from Nigeria or the republic of Niger and they are asked where they are from.

    ***********
    That said:
"Interestingly, Apex Legends’ Game Director at Respawn Entertainment Chad Grenier expressed his desire for the game to be widely adopted in Japan following its release to the Nintendo Switch in March."

In general, the Japanese are much more xenophobic than Americans and they safeguard their culture. Not allowing them to use their language isn't going to fly.
I know a person that was shouted at, because the person they suggested for a job was black and the company said a black person would scare its customers and what the heck was my friend thinking, to suggest a black person. And while that anecdote doesn't say much, the fact that there are brothels in Japan that refuse to serve foreigners should tell the Apex Legend guys that their wokeism isn't going to fly in Conservative Japan.

What happens when people who speak different languages experience the same online environment where language management is in place?

The same thing that happens in this forum if I say the Burmese word . Language policies and filters in multilingual space are hardly a liberal conspiracy. They do however represent a flaw in planning for what ever EA team is responsible for promoting the game in Japan. If they have a language policy in place, they should be looking out for conflicts, overlaps and exploits (multilingual spaces are very much open to abusive use of words from other languages).

Personally... I think banning words is stupid. But to Devil's advocate.... the article doesn't even seek out answers from EA. It doesn't seek to answer why abusive looking words might be banned, or why they might be captured by a likely AI filter that is actively looking for people trying to get around word filters (probably where the confusion arises) - instead it just posits leading questions to lead the reader to the conclusion they've set up in the article.

How do you abuse someone with words? Do your print them out in giant paper stack and beat one with it so it leaves no bruises?

Sure individual words don't hurt. But there is a mountain (probably literal) of peer reviewed evidence for the harm that verbal and emotional abuse can cause - using words. I don't think a case can be made that it doesn't. So it is entirely appropriate for websites and forums to self-moderate their communities. We aren't forced to join them.

But that isn't the issue here. The issue is how selectively banning - probably through an automated process words can cause problems where an audience is comes from different linguistic backgrounds. I think language filters are stupid, because people can cause plenty of emotional trauma without resorting to specific banable words. In Alhoon's case, a name was banned without understanding context. When in fact the context should rationalise the ban. Not just an iffy looking word.

Only about 1,5% of the Japanese population is foreign born.Cosmopolitanism is a good thing, isn't it? the cosmopolitanian patriot, for Apiah, look for" the possibility of the existence of a world where everyone is rooted cosmopolitan, linked to their national roots and cultural specificities, but benefiting from the existence of different places that represent home for other culturally diverse people".
This is inevitable, right? "The world is getting more crowded; in the next half a century the population of our once foraging species will approach nine billion. Depending on the circumstances, conversations across boundaries can be delightful, or just vexing: what they are mainly are, though, is inevitable"

Hardly to compare...U.S. Capitol rioter gets 41 months in prison, longest sentence

Three years and and half, that's all? a better comparison: five years jail time for a pair of Oreo nikes?
Dayonn Davis was 15 when he committed a crime that would get him tried in court as an adult. A Facebook sale of a pair of Oreo Nikes, priced at around $100, went sour when the Columbus, Georgia teen attempted to steal them. Without the knowledge of Davis, a friend pulled out a pistol and everybody ran. Reluctantly, Davis finally gave up the name of his armed friend, but the victim could not pick him out of a lineup. For that 2016 crime, last week Davis was sentenced to five years jail time and 10 years probation

Davis was allegedly involved in an armed robbery with a deadly weapon and agreed to plead guilty to robbery by force.

The shoes—which are identified only as "Nike Oreos"—were stolen after Davis tried them on and allegedly told the seller, "These shoes is took." That's when Davis' cohort pulled a pistol before all three individuals fled the scene. Later, police found the stolen sneakers in Davis' closet.

    PSA (again)
The FBI has found scant evidence that the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was the result of an organized plot to overturn the presidential election result, according to four current and former law enforcement officials.

Though federal officials have arrested more than 570 alleged participants, the FBI at this point believes the violence was not centrally coordinated by far-right groups or prominent supporters of then-President Donald Trump, according to the sources, who have been either directly involved in or briefed regularly on the wide-ranging investigations.

"Ninety to ninety-five percent of these are one-off cases," said a former senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. "Then you have five percent, maybe, of these militia groups that were more closely organized. But there was no grand scheme with Roger Stone and Alex Jones and all of these people to storm the Capitol and take hostages."

Okay, so it was a spontaneous attempt to storm the Capitol and take hostages, what's your point?

A significant custodial sentence is appropriate for armed robbery.

Scott Fairlamb was convicted of assaulting a police officer. The offence was not aggravated by the use of a weapon. Fairlamb was not charged with insurrection. For a reasonable comparison: far-left militant in Portland receives four years for ambushing a federal officer with a hammer.

I'm yet to hear of any 1/6 participant being charged with insurrection or rebellion.
