I vaguely remember a helicopter shot TV clip back then with guys running over the roof for a short period and then running even faster off it. Couldn't make much sense of it then, watching the series now and knowing the real danger these 'runners' were exposed to makes it a morbid 'deja vu'.

    Definitely worth watching.

    The true story of Chernobyl

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7j8BMnOKYW8

The docu report has contents, which were partially template for the HBO series.

Edit: However, i'm surprised that it needed first the HBO series to make aware of the dangers. But well, i was twenty as Chernobyl happened, and Three Mile and other occasions were long known. The unlimited stupidy of the human species is known latest since then, just in this regard as well.

Binged the whole thing. As a show it was great, although there were multiple inaccuracies - Dyatlov wasn't a cartoon villain (there is an interview on youtube with him shortly before he passed away in the 1990s), some characters were made up (like the geriatric Leninist), some were cut out (like the American doctor whose inaccurate treatment caused more people to die in Moscow hospital, or dozens of other scientists who aided Legasov, who were all combined into one character of that scientist from Belarus) and KGB wasn't really stalking Legasov and liquidators (at that point perestroika was at full swing already). Other then that, it was very well done and did reflect aesthetics of that period really well.
It did, hmost importantly, show that ARS is unarguably the worst ing way to go, making drawing & quartering look like a nice day in a park. If you really want to ruing your day, look up Hisashi Ouchi and 1999 Tokaimura nuclear accident.

Great series, had me on the edge of my seat even though I knew what was going to happen. Disturbing to think the protective concrete dome will only be effective up to 2100. Makes me very thankful the cold war remained cold or else we have many more zones that would be hot for thousands of years.

I’m on episode 4, so far it’s been great - and a story that’s actually followable, which a lot of series today aren’t, losing momentum halfway through. Engaging and enlightening.

Did you finish it? And what are your thoughts on the finale if so?

I rate this series at 3.6/10. Bad, but not terrible
Apparently some of the science is wrong too, going by youtube videos.

I saw an online article in Forbes debunking the show...that's a business mag not a science one. There's been some politicians and doctors making statements that the show was exaggerated too. Is the Nuclear Industry pushing back against perceived bad publicity?

I guess the show did get things wrong and made "dramatic" changes for impact (silly IMHO, writers are addicted to this sort of tampering and can't help themselves-"what if the entire committee was the woman from West Wing?"), buts triggered the Russians, I imagine its triggered Big Uranium too.

it seems this is another case of even reasonable, non-coroporate pro-nuclear people getting pissy because it "makes nuclear look bad". thing is, people are dumb, making the show more like a documentary (also dumb) wont convince irrational people that nuclear isnt unsafe.

    Low? It's not 3.6. It's 15000.
