Default Request: Monograms of ancient greek polis and hellenistic kings

    Hi,

i'm creating shield textures for hellenistic factions and minor greek city states for my longterm project a overhaul mod for Rome II.

As long i have found out, that greek polis and hellenistic states/ kings had used monograms for their shield patterns (shown mostly on coins).

For example the wellknown lambda for sparta.

    Or MAKE for Macedonia:

    Or ATN for Antigonos Gonatas:

So has anyone knowledge which monograms greek polis / hellenistic kingdoms / hellenistic kings used in old greek alphabet?

Examples in ancient greek are welcome.

I will try then to repaint them as shield pattern.

I have made some shield patterns of the monogram of Pyrrhus.

    Nice textures

I've been researching poleis individually, giving special consideration to unique symbology as well as the more broadly used symbols they identified with. - As you mentioned, coins are a good place to look. I've found Wildwinds to be the most helpful database, and though actually looking at their images can be an annoying task, you'll most likely find any prominent monograms by skimming over descriptions in each polis' section.

For instance, the monogram for Syracuse became obvious rather quickly as ΣYΡA (SYRA) popped up quite often. More rarely it was written out as ΣYΡAKOΣION (SYRAKOSION)

I'm only just beginning my research, but I'm guessing the nice and proper monograms (rather than the simpler ones like ΣYΡA or MAKE) such as the one you have for Pyrrhus are unfortunately more rare.

Yeah, coins are very good source for shield patterns.

I have found meanwhile some more:

    Massalia

    Nicaia in Bithynia

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Or Hieron for Syracuse around 270 BC (the change from democracy to tyranny/kingdom was also visible on the coins):

These are fantastic Any chance they will be released as a resource pack, or will it be its own mod?
