Thread: Triarii (late)

    Default Triarii (late)

Why is it that the triarii (late) can only fight with the spear? Even when hoplit mode is enabled!? Same goes for hastati & principes (early). Is it possible to make both possible? Fight with spear when in hoplit mode and with sword when enabled like triarii early?

No because they fight in a different way as they moved away from hoplite tactics.

They used to have mixed sword and spear animations but we had a ton of people complaining about them since animation is not smooth so you had guy holding his spear, switching to sword for a second and again back to spear, without any transition animation between.

With hoplit formation I mean fighting with the spear in close formation. I mean in close combat you will prefer rather the sword than the spear. Makes no sense to me that the late triarii have the gladii with them but won’t use it. And can you explain to me why the early triarii have this function but the late don’t? Thanks for the answer kam!

Because early triari are fighting as hoplites while later hoplites show new fighting style where Hastati and Principes are more important. Otherwise there would be no changes between Camillian and Polybian Rome.

This time, I agree 100% with KAM. I really like the early spear units, and later you can use the gladius in polybian and marian reforms. It is a very nice variation for gameplay, no matter how historically accurate.

The later Triarii use the hastae I believe, which is a shorter spear than a hoplite one, which makes them a more compatible unit in relation the the other polybian era units I believe.

I can't wait for RotR to finish. Early Rome best Rome.

Could someone make a mod for me where this is possible?

While I love Camillan Rome, still gotta give the edge to Polybian Rome...except in the case of Triarii. Damn, them early Triarii are just powerhouses. Late are still great, but Hoplite formation is, to me, more worth it.
