    Default Battle on the Kingsroad

    Located just south of Harrenhal.

With Rhaenyra's army augmented by levies of the Riverlands, the Queen sends a strong force south to test the Crownlands defenses. She hopes that, if successful, an invasion south towards King's Landing could be possible. For she cannot remain in the Riverlands forever, a fact that she knows well. An armed force of ten thousand men, commanded by Lord Strong and Ser Rowan, head south with Rhaenys and her dragon, Meleys, the Red Queen. Mere days after passing by Harrenhal, and taking the Kingsroad south, they encounter a force of the Usurper's loyalists. Banners of the Westerlands and Crownlands could be seen flying within their ranks. Above the opposing force flew the brilliant dragon, Sunfyre, with its rider, the Usurper himself resting upon it. Aegon had come to burn Harrenhal himself for what had transpired but instead came across a force of Rhaenyra's soldiers and Rhaenys herself. Sunfyre had grown restless... this should be a good fight.

The Battle on the Kingsroad opened well enough for the Blacks, who bet on a strong attack by their right flank & center against the Green left & center while their weak left wing hung back. The Greens, for their part, had placed Aegon II on their left, and so despite initial success in crunching through the Green left's front line, the Black right seemed in danger of going up in dragonfire - until their own dragonrider, the Queen Who Never Was, raced in atop Meleys to challenge the young usurper. A grueling aerial battle between the Red Queen and the Golden King ensued, and both dragons were evenly matched: Meleys was older and more experienced, being a hardened veteran of a hundred battles and skirmishes, but Sunfyre was a huge dragon for his age and possessed formidable fighting instincts to match his innate ferocity. The sky above the battlefield was lit up with scarlet and golden flames, resembling a premature sunset to an outside observer, and both dragons got multiple good hits in on one another until Meleys slipped up - rider and dragon alike growing too confident from a series of clean hits where they were able to significantly wound Sunfyre - and the King & his dragon seized the chance to counterattack, surprising and overwhelming the former.

Meleys crashing into the ground, quite dead along with her rider, marked the effective end of the battle. The Black right beat a hasty retreat before too many of their number could be roasted alive by the vengeful Sunfyre; the Black left, weakest of the three flanks to begin with, had meanwhile been overwhelmed by the Green right. The Black center had actually achieved breakthrough and put their Green counterpart to flight, but with the collapse of the other flanks and Sunfyre still loose, they had no choice but to fall back before they were completely encircled and annihilated; although some of their soldiers were able to get their hands on Ser Gwayne Hightower (the opposing commander) previously, they lost him in the chaos of the retreat as Aegon and Sunfyre descended upon them. The Black rearguard under Lord Rowan bravely charged forward to cover the retreat and managed to stay the Greens' pursuit, at the cost of hundreds of their horsemen on the points of Green blades and spears or within the golden flames of Aegon's flying steed.

As the battle began, Ser Gwayne Hightower realized that it might be the first and last battle he would fight within the war, as he and his men charged against the enemy lines. The shadows of both dragons, Sunfyre on their side, Meleys on the enemy' side began to fly left and right over them. When he heard the yells and cries in agony on both sides, he wasn't even sure what was going on as his concentration allowed him only to focus at his nearest opponents. Where he had hopes that the Greens would overwhelm the enemy, he would quickly realize that the charge, which he lead was about to crumble as suddenly he was surrounded by enemy soldiers. In horror Ser Gwayne laid the next second on the ground, as the enemy was pointing spear and blade at the Hightower man, who laid on top of his own slaughtered men, the Black offensive continiueing their assault on the enemy center. Given his coat of arms the knights in front of him must have noticed that he was a valuable hostage.
They overwhelmed them... have the Blacks already won?
Hightower had lost hope for a moment, as he couldn't reach out for his sword, when he laid on the ground, immobile in his armour as a turtle. Some of the knights, who stayed back in order to get him imprisoned already prepared themselves to drag their hostage with them, when suddenly dragonfire put ablaze the enemy back lines.
    Sunfyre!
It was that moment, when Ser Gwayne realized that something else had crashed to the ground, as the Blacks were routing. Some of them would have nearly trampled him in the panic, when the lines of the Greens began to chase after them, but luckily some of the Crownlander Knights broke through the routing army first and immidiately recognized the situation. Those who intended to capture Ser Gwayne didn't ponder all too long whether they should try to fight back in order to at least obtain a hostage and rather fled themselves once they realized the situation was turning out bad for them. Aegon on his dragon triumphed over the enemy lines, while the Blacks retreated, one of their dragon riders having perished within a battle already.
Ser Gwayne breathed out in relief as he overlooked the battlefield - he was certain that he would die this day. And yet fate smiled upon Aegon and his men.

Lord Gerold Rowan was marked as commander of the Rearguard. He had no hesitance at the command. In fact part of his training and knowledge had been on both theory and history of holding the rear. He personally preferred not to flee but he understood from a tactical standpoint that an exit strategy should always be accounted for. In light of the fact he was a new addition to the army he was surprised he was left with the detail but made sure he did his job. Gerold settled his battle axe on his shoulder and kept his forces with shields up and guards ready while eyeing both the battle in the sky and the battle in front of him. His steed, a strong stallion from the Reach, paced as Gerold bid him eagerly awaiting an opportunity to wet his axe with blood. As he watched the left flank under the command of Forrest Frey lost their line and began to lose otherwise. Gerold cursed the weakness of the men and their commander and his horse grunted in evident agreement. He held to hope as the Black army seemed to be piercing through the enemy lines successfully. Suddenly the end appeared. Gerold was forced to look up as a sudden and shaking shriek pierce his ears and he was forced to watch The Queen that Never Was crash to the earth in a terrible blow to their cause. Then in short order, as the stench of death began to waft over to himself and his men, he witnessed the Blackwood's right flank begin to crumble and dissipate. The battle was lost.

The center began its retreat and so Gerold sounded his war horn. He sounded it three times, throwing his fist in the air on the shaft of his axe. He led his charge. As the center, right and left flanks came together in retreat Gerold rode through it with his personal guards in tow as his second-in-command got the line ready. He fought to allow the escaping army beyond his rearguard and then rejoined it on foot. Axe in hand he lead his men into the jaws of the enemy army, flanks no longer in existence to him, as his axe met enemy flesh. Gerold cleaved arm and torso with his axe and punctured armor with the spike on his axes back. He surveyed occasionally to see how his line was doing and it held. He turned to face the enemy again and found plenty more oncoming. Gerold would blow his war horn to give his men some life but as the retreat wore on he couldn't be bothered to do so. Suddenly an arrow pierced his thigh. One of his personal guard turned and shouted to get Gerold back on his horse but he refused. Gerold instead continued his stand.

After the arrow he began to scream at the oncoming army "I am Ser Gerold Rowan, face me and die!" This taunt held but for a moment when the numbers of the Green Army continued to pound at their line. Bit by bit, a sword cut his arm, a spear pierced his other leg, another sword slashed him under his armor at the shoulder, and finally a near death blow to his right side causing something to break and for his breath to leave him. He took the arm of his assailant, took hold of his neck, and strangled him. He was ripped from their neck and unapologetically tossed onto his stallion. One of the last remaining of his personal guard rushed him away from the battle as the Rearguard too, fell back.

The dance above the battlefield was certainly a sight to behold. The brilliant Sunfyre bore its fangs and let loose fire at its opponent, the Red Queen herself. Rhaenys and Aegon fought one another above the soldiers and the banners. The King knew of the risk, commanding the army without the support of Vhagar and Tessarion. But this opportunity could not be let go of and he desired to prove that he was the true King. Jaws snapped, flames were belched, and roars were heard before the battle above fell into silence. A shadow appeared above the armies as Meleys fell to the ground, the impact ending the dragons life instantly. Rhaenys fell shortly after, she had already been dead long before landing on the ground. With a mighty roar, Sunfyre declared its victory. Aegon, however, was not without injury. Nonetheless, he drove Sunfyre to attack the enemy army. Brilliant golden flames cutting into the ranks of the Riverland soldiers.

    Victory was his.

Atop the Red Queen, Rhaenys Targaryen was smirking behind her helm's visor as she took off. Years of practice and hard fighting had prepared her for the occasion where she might have to fight her own dragon-riding kin, she felt, as she and Meleys soared to face Aegon atop his own gleaming-gold draconic steed. She had soared upwards first before diving down, hoping for Meleys to be able to catch Sunfyre's neck in her jaws, but the younger dragon was able to weave out of her way at the last second and she had to pull up to keep herself from plummeting into the ground. Gritting her teeth, she steered Meleys around and proceeded to engage Aegon in a protracted dragon duel: zooming towards one another on their dragons, taking swipes with their claws or battering each other with their bodies, and of course exchanging great plumes of fire that painted the sky red and gold.

Though the fight couldn't have gone on for more than half an hour, it felt like half an eternity to the Queen Who Never Was. It had been a while since Rhaenys got to actually fight atop Meleys, as opposed to simply riding around on her, and she found the sensation of the adrenaline surge to be refreshing and exhilarating after so long. Late in the fight the Red Queen managed to inflict several deep wounds on the Golden King, raking the rival dragon's flanks and belly with her claws, and Rhaenys felt the fight was close to an end. She took her dragon up, up and away, before circling to divebomb Aegon and Sunfyre once more. If she can get just one more good hit in...

When they dove, dragon and rider alike found their counterparts were already fast ascending to meet them, not content to wait for annihilation from above. Sunfyre swerved forward at the last moment, buffeting Meleys' underside and throwing the older dragon off-balance. Rhaenys cursed, realizing she had made a mistake, but by the time she'd righted Meleys again she found Aegon and Sunfyre above her, the usurper leering wickedly down from his saddle, his dragon about ready to unleash another burst of flame.

In one heartbeat, Rhaenys' mind flashed, from shock to panic to the image of her husband and children, the latter long deceased. She had to admit, she wasn't expecting to be the first of their parents to join them in the afterlife. And certainly not before taking that much-deserved vacation around the world with Corlys. Forgive me, darling, but it seems I must tend to Laena and Laenor...

In the next, she was already dead.

    -----

Down below, Ser Ronnet Reyne commanded the Green right wing against the Black left. Leading from the front, the lion-helmed knight exhorted his men forward in a great charge aimed at breaking the Blacks quickly with overwhelming force. This proved to be a rather easier task than some of the less confident knights and soldiers around him had believed, for the Black left was much smaller and weaker than their formation. Led by knights in shining armor and their squires arrayed into battle lines, the Greens pushed through the Blacks' volley of missiles and a thin screen of freeriders in light armor, then smashed into the mass of light sergeants and peasant conscripts behind. It took only a few minutes of sustained combat for the Black left to shatter, the quartered Targaryen dragon and Arryn falcon standard hastily withdrawing alongside the twin towers of Frey in the face of the true King's golden dragon and Reyne's own scarlet lion. Moments later, one dragon fell, and with tremendous relief Ronnet acknowledged that it was the enemy's and not that of his liege.

With a great victorious shout of "FORWARD! FOR AEGON! FOR THE IRON THRONE!" Ronnet pointed his bloody blade forward, driving his men to pursue the broken Blacks for as long as they were able.
