Often seen as his father's favorite son, Kirth Tully spent most of his youth on the court of Riverrun, where he was trained into a capable knight over the years. Being with his twin brother Eldred at good terms during his childhood, the relationship between the two changed, as Eldred began to disobey their father on several times. Kirth defended his brother even back then in hopes to avoid any further conflicts, but fate would strike the Tully family unfortunately soon enough, as Kirth had to witness the death of his father during a boar hunt. With the horse being wounded and Ser Kennet lying lifeless on the ground, it needed no maester to confirm that he broke his neck during the fall. The depression, which followed afterwards within the walls of Riverrun was even felt by Kirth's grandfather Lord Hosteen Tully, who grew over the years more dement and barely visited the court. In order to keep the daily life within Riverrun intact, Kirth overtook the position of the steward within the keep, while Lord Hosteen was bound to the bed.
Having arranged a marriage between himself and a daughter of House Piper, Kirth tended to travel through the Riverlands in order to visit the courts of the local High Lords in order to show that House Tully's presence wasn't weakened despite the tragic loss of his father.
Given his reputation and efforts, Kirth always assumed that he would be named Lord of Riverrun - when his grandfather passed away, however, the announcement that Eldred would inherit the Lord Paramount title enraged his twin brother enough to barely even care that he would overtake the lordship of Branstone instead. Once the burial of their grandfather was over, Kirth left Riverrun with his wife and children wordless in order to travel towards his new seat of power.
