    DRAGONSTONE

Dragonstone is a grim place. The castle was built using by the Valyrians, using arcane arts, fire, and sorcery. With the use of magic, the Valyrians were capable of liquefying stone. The dragonlords loved little more than twisting stone into strange, fanciful, and ornate shapes, and as such used their magic to shape the castle to look like multiple dragons. The citadel of Dragonstone is wrought all of black stone (the "stones of hell", if old tales are true). Instead of merlons, grotesques and gargoyles serve as brooding crenellations along the three curtain walls. The Dragonmount, an active volcano, towers over the castle, and its fires warm certain places of the castle, specially the lower levels. Dragons are said to thrive in this environment and certainly here are stored most the Targaryen's clutches of eggs.

The castle and lordship comprise the apanage of the kingdom's heir, traditionally, albeit for some time it was held by Rhaena, the Black Bride of Maegor, also called the Queen in the East. For quite a few years it has been in the possession of Lady Rhaenyra, the heiress apparent; however, she did prefer the pleasantries of the court to the damp, grim and imposing castle that was hers. Still, she resides here with most her court, including husband, children, sworn swords and retainers. It lays close to other islands, inhabited by the direct vassals of Dragonstone foremost among them the Velaryons of Driftmark.

    BIOGRAPHY:

he Realm’s Delight. The eldest surviving child of Viserys I and his first wife, Aemma Arryn. The Princess of Dragonstone and heiress of the realm, because her father wished so. Haughty and imperious, like any other Targaryen, she had been her father’s cupbearer and a dragonrider before the age of ten. At three-and-ten she was disputing with her father’s equally nubile second wife, Alicent Hightower, a quarrel that would embroil each other’s offspring in a bitter feud; something good old Viserys wanted to hear no word about. After a scandal involving her uncle, Daemon, and her sworn sword, Criston Cole, she was promptly married to her cousin, Laenor Velaryon, heir of Driftmark. But his is a sad tale, born to Lord Corlys and Rhaenys, the Queen Who Never Was, Laenor was fated to sire three children and none, have a wife and several husbands, being twice a prospective holder of the Iron Throne but instead dying in a petty dispute in a marketplace. Whatever the story might be, three children were born from their union, Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey, so called for a fallen friend of Laenor’s, the late Joffrey Lonmouth. Venomous tongues spread the tales wide and forth of the children’s paternity, for they were brown of hair and didn’t boast the traits of Old Valyria, but nothing could be ushered below the shadow of the Iron Throne, as long as Viserys ruled and Rhaenyra stood as heir. The three sons thrived in Dragonstone, like young hatchlings, and in little time they all claimed the skies, riding their own dragons, their mounts did much to silence the wrongdoers and the traitors daring enough to doubt their legitimacy.

When Laenor died, the princess was again a sought match, but against the rules of decency and in a slightly provocative way, Daemon wed and bed her own niece, with Laenor’s memory still lingering in the air, angering his brother the king beyond measure; and what did Lord and Lady Velaryon, former father and mother in law to both of them, is not known. But, nothing could be done, and to save face the marriage was condoned. Two more sons were to be born from this marriage, Aegon, whose name was chosen to spit the Hightower queen’s own firstborn, and Viserys, a shrewd boy who sooner learned to talk than to walk. In time, the princess’ body had withered, grown fleshy and tired from many pregnancies, no longer she was the nimble woman who had men vying for her atentions and dazzled those in court with her beauty. Like her she-dragon, Syrax, she had grown soft and lazy, too accomadating and comfortable. While her yellow dragon slept, chained, in Dragonstone, overfed and rarely mounted, Rhaenyra frolicked with her own uncle and assumed her fate was written in stone. But the differences and rivalry between the so called blacks and greens ran deeper than kindred, and bitterly so.

With so many sons bearing the blood of the dragon and in posession of Dragonstone -traditional apanage of the heir-, the succession seemed secured, there were no clouds in the sky when the queen entered confinement, to deliver her latest child. But, when she did, her father’s corpse had been festering in a closed chamber for days, and as maggots bursting from his skin, traitors had claimed a Crown that weren’t theirs to claim, and a princeling was proclaimed a king. Aegon the Elder, son of Alicent and Viserys, boasted that the Iron Throne was not Rhaenyra’s to sit, as long as she had brothers of her blood to grace the seat. Hate runs deeper than love and flocks of ravens darkened the skies; drums and the whistling sound of naked steal silenced words of wisdom.

    • The Blood of the Dragon, strong of body: +2 Survival.
    • A prince of the realm: +1 Charisma.
    • Squired for several years: +1 Personal Combat.

    Temperament:

    • Upbeat: Nothing seems to get this character down. They're perpetually smiling and looking on the bright side of even the darkest developments, truly the kind of optimism that can be infectious...or delusional, if the situation is bad enough. +1 to surviving non-battle death rolls, -1 to post-battle rolls (captivity, death, wounding).

    Biography:

"Rhaenyra Targaryen -blissfully married to Laenor Velaryon-, fathered three strong and healthy children, Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey. All of them were, remarkably, lacking the traits of Old Valyria, being brown-haired and pug nosed, unlike both their parents. Rhaenyra used to say they very much looked like her late mother, Aemma Arryn; no-one dared to claim otherwise. Ser Laenor prefered frolicking in High Tide, with his good companion Qarl Correy, to be in his wife's good companies in either Dragonstone or King's Landing, while she kept her own court in the former and partaked in the later's pageants and pleasantries. Rhaenyra was oft well acompanied, luckily, by good servants like Harwin Strong, her sworn sword and a quite formidable man. Many whispered the children were not Laenor's, which was tantamount of accusing Lady Rhaenyra of treason. However, the rumours diminished after in short succession all the Velaryons became dragonriders, erasing many doubts about their legitimacy; one should be consider that dragon blood is still on the mother's side, no matter the father, but such is idle talking. Arrax is Lucerys' mount, a young and nimble, but thriving, dragon. Ser Laenor, alas, died at the hands of his good friend, in Spicetown, leaving Rhaenyra devastated (...) Very shortly after the funeral, she married her uncle Daemon.

(...) he is blissfully betrothed to his noble cousin, Lady Rhaena of Pentos, daughter to Lord Daemon and Lady Laena Velaryon, ever since the late Lady Velaryon and the princess arranged the said match, who was publicly announced by them both and condoned by the king, His Grace Viserys (...)

Luke, thus nicknamed by his kin and blood, secondborn son of Laenor and his wife, was a quite confident boy, who at very young age managed to take out prince Aemond's eye, after the older boy had broken his nose. Honest, upright and reasonable, Lucerys probably is the most level-headed of his full-siblings, not being as fiery or brazen as many of his relatives. Gentle and kind, he is also strong of body, and has squired for several years with Ser Erryk Cargyll; or to Ser Arryk, one does not know. Among the young Velaryons he certainly is the one resembling his good-natured grandfather the most, and Viserys, understandably, doted on him. During the most recent illness of Lord Corlys, Rhaenyra tried to make Luke heir to Driftmark, but the old Sea Snake was unwilling to do as much, leaving the succession open. Lord Velaryon, who gave absolutely no credence to all the gossips concerning his grandson's paternity, must have been too infirm to settle succession back then, but surely he will soon make the young Lucerys his only heir. Or so Rhaenyra strongly hopes (...)"

Excerpt of Maester Gerardys' personal notes about Rhaenyra's righteous rule. Book I, page two-and-twenty.

    Default Re: Dragonstone

Prince Daemon prowled through the obsidian halls of Dragonstone with murderous intent. Servants and courtiers avoided him like the plague, finding some excuse or other to remove themselves from his path, turning this way and that to leave his sight; as all are wise to do when the brother of the King enters one of his 'moods'. Something had irked him. Something small, most like, like a stain on his favourite tunic, or a lost game of dice... It mattered not, for to the Prince it was as if he had suffered a gross reversal of fortune. Often he was this way, in the last few weeks. Being locked up in Dragonstone whilst his wife, heavy with child, brooded in confinement within her tower, whilst he was left to stalk the lonely halls. Old though she had become, he could no longer enjoy her company, nor that of any woman: Rhaenyra had, in one of the dark mood swings she had when with child, forbidden Daemon from seeing any of the comely ladies whose company he so enjoyed. Sometimes, the Realm's Delight could be a bloody shrew. "Your behaviour is unseemly", she had said. Pah. It was like he had married his brother.

Water from above battered at the faces of the brooding gargoyles that lined the battlements, the storm beating Dragonstone like a fire-blackened drum. The inclement weather had interrupted him whilst giving one of the squires a good thrashing, with all but the dragons dashing indoors, such was the strength of the gale. Old Ser Harbert had been swept off his feet, frail form taken up by the wind... Only to be hurled from the rampart. What a mess it was. At least Caraxes would eat well, for the servants had not the stomach to go out and try to recover the decrepit knight's corpse. Good for something, finally. Though the bastard could drink well for a man his age. It was times like this that made him miss the Stepstones, where he had felt truly alive. Daemon was now only a few years shy of fifty, but was still a warrior in every sense. Strong and spry with a stomach like tempered steel, the skin on his face had barely begun to wrinkle, and he looked only a few years older than his wife despite being almost two decades her senior. He had little trouble ascending the steps to her tower as he did at this very moment, taking a little pleasure in the fact that his brother was most likely panting for air back in the Red Keep after merely rising from his cushioned chair.

His presence needed not be announced. One wearied look from the chamberlain told the would-be Queen everything. Moments later, Daemon burst in. The Prince was garbed head to foot in black and gold finery, the gleaming silver hair that reached down past his hairless chin now flecked with a few small strands of grey. A fabulous striped cloak - a Zorse pelt, brought from Pentos - hung loosely about his shoulders, the most expensive and ostentatious of the many accoutrements that were usually about his person. As always, Dark Sister hung from his belt.

    "Dear wife."

The venom and directionless anger had been left at the door, and the Prince now spoke with a softer tone and an easy smile. He took a few steps towards her.

"How is our child? Are the Maesters tending to you well? If not, I'm certain Caraxes has room for supper."

A chuckle marked the jape, but the anxiety of the physicians made it plain that one could ever be sure.

Rhaenyra looked sour, her brow indicated as much. She was sitting in a cushioned throne, covered in furs, with the gown revealing and emphasizing her swollen belly. She had turned plump, the Realm's Delight no more, despite she was shy over thirty, the princess was thick and fleshy, just like her father. Her mother had been a little thing, frail, as women from house Arryn usually were, narrow of hips, but she took after that huge glutton of Viserys, being larger than many women. Always a petty woman, she had delighted in gossiping about her half-sister's rotund figure, but the birth of Viserys had left her ravaged, old before her age, as plump as Helaena ever was. She sometimes looked desperate for some affection and of course was glad Daemon married her, though she had become more dependant, more anxiously seeking his affections. Her last child was like a beacon of hope, mayhaps she would tie even further Daemon to her, but Rhaenyra feared his boredom and missed her old self; naked, under the moonlight, spotless skin gleaming, she could have any man. Now, she only had a title and the diminished remains of her beauty. No matter the bodices or the make up, she had aged badly. But it didn't matter, hers was the body of a queen, she had to be worshipped, flawed or not. She curtsied at her husband, like a small child.

    "Hohoho"

She offered him a hand, brimming with rings.

"I already ordered Willis' right hand to be cut and fed to Syrax"

The said maester looked sour and pale, ashen.

"He had the galls to say that I should have exercised more, instead of entering confinement this soon"

Her mouth was pouty. But she waved a hand.

"But everything is well, husband mine. Any news from my beloved and royal father?"

She was frustrated of late, wrathful. Confined, heavy with child. And, moreso, Corlys had dared to avoid declaring her son heir to Driftmark. The Seven know when that old snake would ever die.

Daemon's imperceptible gaze flickered momentarily over to the white-faced Willis. He was right, though Seven knew that Rhaenyra was touchy about her weight, and the old viper deserved everything he got for being so heavy handed. The Prince dropped to once knee, bringing his considerable height down to Rhaenyra's level, and pressed his lips to his niece's bejewelled fingers. There was still some of her old beauty there, in those wild eyes, but childbirth and the silent feud with her stepmother had left her long since diminished.

"You look the very picture of health and beauty, dear. Perhaps Willis should lose his eyes, instead, if he insists on not properly using them."

The Rogue Prince smirked wickedly, and then reached out and caressed her face with a gentle brush of his fingers as he rose to his feet. Willis looked horrified.

"My brother is in good health, though he spends much of the day at rest. We shall have to visit soon, after the birth."

Daemon crooned. The fat fool even feared the Iron Throne now, after one of the Conqueror's swords opened his hand to the bone. Viserys was slowly coming towards his end, at long last. There was a tinge sadness in the Prince at that prospect, though what Daemon had lost to his brother had long since hardened his heart to Baelon Targaryen's eldest son. A son and a throne. The day to collect what was owed drew ever closer.

"Show him another grandchild. A grandson?"

Daemon had two boys already, but his brother had sired three. Three turds had popped out of that Hightower to take the throne further away still... Though he knew better than to mention the Lady Alicent in front of his wife, without anyone here to take the brunt of her rage in his stead.

    Default Re: Dragonstone

    "Oh, you spoil me"

She smiled, a hand on her belly. Rhaenyra loved flattery, because that's what she had always been used to. From her very birth, the king's spoiled heiress.

"He needs his eyes. I bet he will behave next time, don't you?"

Rhaenyra chuckled, but her eyes didn't.

    "Oh, he definetely will"

The princess shudders at her husband's touch.

"My beloved sire, he is at the hands of that old harpy, no wonder he is ailing. I will soon return to him, the heir must remain by the king's side. They will all learn their place, foremost that hoary crone"

But it was known Dragonstone was were dragons had to be born. Alysanne had delivered her many children there, in the weirdly-shaped fortress. Rhaenyra was always resentful of the still young queen, who had preserved her comely figure, despite she had delivered four healthy children.

"Or a daughter! I feel it in my bones, it's a she-dragon what I'm carrying"

"We told Her Grace that the probability of delivering a girl is high, my lord"

Said one of the maesters in attendance. Rhaenyra looked back at Daemon, defiant. She knew that sons were all Daemon wanted, to not feel an inch less than her own father, but, she didn't give much care to what he actually wanted in those regards; carrying children was a woman's bussiness.

    "A girl, at last"

Daemon didn't flinch. He had two daughters already, the last memories of his darling Laena. There were precious few people that the Prince loved more than himself, but Baela and Rhaena numbered chief amongst them.

"She will be as beautiful as her mother. Another Realm's Delight."

The current one had faded beyond all recognition, he bitterly reflected. Once upon a time, Daemon's flattery of Rhaenyra had been truly sincere. The light in his eyes faded a little, and he decided to pay Mysaria a visit when he was next in the capita

"We will show her to your dear father. And scour the court of the harpy's filth in the bargain. If it was not treason, why, I would make you a gift of her ugly head."

It had been too long since he had last walked the streets of King's Landing. No doubt the brothels and gambling dens had run dry without his patronage. The Hightowers had been given too long to fester in the Red Keep whilst he had been wasting away with Rhaenyra on Dragonstone.

    "Ho ho ho"

She laughed, slapping her husband's arm softly.

"Surely. A fair child. Father will dote on her so much, can't wait to cross the waves back to the court"

And my seat. Father was too old and too scared to ever mount the throne again, maybe it was time for her to sit on it.

"Not yet. Alicent will pay for her arrogance, but maybe joining the Faith will be more suitable"

It would be so delightful to have her rival in those shapeless septa robes, far from any luxury or power.

"I cannot have a bath of blood after my coronation, dear"

She whispered, grabbing Daemon's chin and then patting his cheek.

"But my brothers will remain an issue..."

A greater one than Daemon ever was to her father.

"Anyone that still dares to wear a green cloak when you are crowned can rot on the Wall with a black one. Either that, or the dragons will not want for food."

Alicent's sons would not disappear without a fight. Daemon particularly relished the prospect of putting that one-eyed whelp in his place. To dare to ride the dragon of Laena, and his father before her...

"But, it shall have to wait on the child. Another playmate for the dragonlings."

Unlike their parents, the children of Rhaenyra and Daemon seemed to enjoy each other's company. Aegon often joined in with Luke and Joff brawling in the courtyard, smaller though he was.

    Rhaenyra frowned and sighed.

"It shall wait. I'm still a turn of the moon away from labour, according to maesters, but there is seemingly no complications"

    She admited.

"And our little Egg will certainly be fond of another sibling. I don't know about Viserys, that kid might not be willing to give up his status as the youngest child"

    "No, he won't."

Daemon chuckled a little. Viserys reminded him of himself at the same age. Everyone went easy on him, even the sour faced septons, and he could talk a beggar out of his last copper.

"They caught him in the kitchens again today, stealing eggs. Seven only know..."

Probably to play some joke on Aegon. The two were almost inseparable. The Prince took a cup of wine from a servant, and idly scratched his fingers against the well-polished metal. She will still a turn of the moon away from birth. Another endless stretch of days spent wasting away here at her side, as she commanded. Daemon raised the cup to his lips and drank deeply.

    "Hahahaha"

She laughed heartily. Maybe it was unnerving for Daemon, because her laughter very closely resembled her father's.

"Only the gods know. He takes after you, he'll become a fearsome lad, in due time. Shame his egg hasn't hatched"

Rhaenyra hoped it would, eventually, for Viserys was envious of his elder siblings' mounts. He carried his egg everywhere, she believed it was from one of Syrax's clutches.

"A day that has been a long time coming."

Daemon vaguely agreed, after a weighted pause; his eyes were on his wife but his mind was elsewhere. He would be King, by virtue of marriage. Protector of the Realm. Though it would be, ahem, Strong's sons that followed after, not his own.

"We should make apanages, for all the boys. Give them all a keep and lands to rule for themselves."

Many of the lords of the realm had sneered at him, whispered behind his back as they extolled his virtues to his face. Viserys had protected them, but the fat fool was slipping from this world. They would lose everything, he vowed.

Daemon knew she'd tried to make Corlys name Luke as heir to Driftmark, but she'd had no such luck. Deep down, the Sea Snake must know that the pug-nosed princelings were not Laenor's sons, or else there would have been no hesitation. Even the betrothal to Rhaena had not soothed his fears.

"Maybe we could make Oldtown a birthday present for Egg."

His lips widened into a wolfish grin.

    "It's a good dragon perch"

The maesters looked even more horrified.

"You, all, leave us. I have no need of your tinctures and oilments, begone"

She looked pouty again. The maesters left in a whistle of old grey robes and rattling chains.

"I tried to convince the old snake to make Luke his heir, to no avail"

"I am convinced that they spy on us."

Daemon mused, as the last Maester departed. Never had he trusted those chained men; they had failed Laena, and poisoned the mind of his brother.

"He grieves for his children still."

The Prince's voice contained a touch of sympathy. He had lost a son, once, many years ago across the Narrow Sea. It wounded him to think of it even now.

"What reason does he hold back, do you wonder?"

The curiosity was entirely feigned; there was only one reason why the Sea Snake could have demurred from naming Lucerys his heir. He wondered, though, if Rhaenyra was bold enough to speak of it openly. It had been an open secret, almost, for those that had eyes to see - those who knew the nature of the Realm's Delight as he did, though they were few and far between. Far more existed that brought the lie or simply had no interest in knowing the truth. His gaze flickered over to her, the eyes of deep violet almost shining black in those dim chambers.

    She waves a hand, dismessively.

"They're chained dogs. It's no matter what they think, and some are of great usefulness"

    Granted the princess.

"Their deaths were untimely, specially Laena's"

Rhaenyra did miss what had become a friend, one of her truest, but she had died in the curse that was childbirth, sadly.

"I bet he isn't willing to think about his own end. Or, else, he is waiting for a son to be born of our children's union"

Both of Daemon's and Laena's daughters were betrothed to their cousins, sons of Laenor and Rhaenyra. The princess didn't even bother thinking how many times they were related. Theoretically, at least.

    "Maybe... well, I don't know"

She coughs to clear her throat and blushed so very slightly.

"Once I'm queen it won't matter anyway"

    ”No, it will not.”

A faint smile crossed the Prince’s face, though it barely met his eyes.

“With the God’s blessing, we shall soon welcome our first grandchild.”

Damn, he was getting old. Age was starting to gnaw at his bones, and flecks of grey had begun to make themselves known in his hair and beard. If Daemon Targaryen feared anything, it was to grow old and fat.

    "Yes"

    She said.

"A grandson, born to your daughters, would do much to dissipate many's doubts over the succession"

    Rhaenyra wrinkled her mouth.

"What can that fop of a brother of mine do? He's an useless brat. Even his dragon is presumptuous thing"

He grimaced a little, and took a seat. Another cup of wine was poured; dry Dornish red.

"If they have a scrap of wisdom, they won't contest."

Though likely he would, in the same position. A woman could not properly rule in a man's place. Vhagar alone made them a force to be reckoned with.

"But no doubt the Hightowers will whisper in your brother's ear. Otto's mouth never spewed anything but for as long as I have known him."
