    Default Dragonstone

    DRAGONSTONE

Dragonstone is a grim place. The castle was built using by the Valyrians, using arcane arts, fire, and sorcery. With the use of magic, the Valyrians were capable of liquefying stone. The dragonlords loved little more than twisting stone into strange, fanciful, and ornate shapes, and as such used their magic to shape the castle to look like multiple dragons. The citadel of Dragonstone is wrought all of black stone (the "stones of hell", if old tales are true). Instead of merlons, grotesques and gargoyles serve as brooding crenellations along the three curtain walls. The Dragonmount, an active volcano, towers over the castle, and its fires warm certain places of the castle, specially the lower levels. Dragons are said to thrive in this environment and certainly here are stored most the Targaryen's clutches of eggs.

The castle and lordship comprise the apanage of the kingdom's heir, traditionally, albeit for some time it was held by Rhaena, the Black Bride of Maegor, also called the Queen in the East. For quite a few years it has been in the possession of Lady Rhaenyra, the heiress apparent; however, she did prefer the pleasantries of the court to the damp, grim and imposing castle that was hers. Still, she resides here with most her court, including husband, children, sworn swords and retainers. It lays close to other islands, inhabited by the direct vassals of Dragonstone foremost among them the Velaryons of Driftmark.

    BIOGRAPHY:

he Realm’s Delight. The eldest surviving child of Viserys I and his first wife, Aemma Arryn. The Princess of Dragonstone and heiress of the realm, because her father wished so. Haughty and imperious, like any other Targaryen, she had been her father’s cupbearer and a dragonrider before the age of ten. At three-and-ten she was disputing with her father’s equally nubile second wife, Alicent Hightower, a quarrel that would embroil each other’s offspring in a bitter feud; something good old Viserys wanted to hear no word about. After a scandal involving her uncle, Daemon, and her sworn sword, Criston Cole, she was promptly married to her cousin, Laenor Velaryon, heir of Driftmark. But his is a sad tale, born to Lord Corlys and Rhaenys, the Queen Who Never Was, Laenor was fated to sire three children and none, have a wife and several husbands, being twice a prospective holder of the Iron Throne but instead dying in a petty dispute in a marketplace. Whatever the story might be, three children were born from their union, Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey, so called for a fallen friend of Laenor’s, the late Joffrey Lonmouth. Venomous tongues spread the tales wide and forth of the children’s paternity, for they were brown of hair and didn’t boast the traits of Old Valyria, but nothing could be ushered below the shadow of the Iron Throne, as long as Viserys ruled and Rhaenyra stood as heir. The three sons thrived in Dragonstone, like young hatchlings, and in little time they all claimed the skies, riding their own dragons, their mounts did much to silence the wrongdoers and the traitors daring enough to doubt their legitimacy.

When Laenor died, the princess was again a sought match, but against the rules of decency and in a slightly provocative way, Daemon wed and bed her own niece, with Laenor’s memory still lingering in the air, angering his brother the king beyond measure; and what did Lord and Lady Velaryon, former father and mother in law to both of them, is not known. But, nothing could be done, and to save face the marriage was condoned. Two more sons were to be born from this marriage, Aegon, whose name was chosen to spit the Hightower queen’s own firstborn, and Viserys, a shrewd boy who sooner learned to talk than to walk. In time, the princess’ body had withered, grown fleshy and tired from many pregnancies, no longer she was the nimble woman who had men vying for her atentions and dazzled those in court with her beauty. Like her she-dragon, Syrax, she had grown soft and lazy, too accomadating and comfortable. While her yellow dragon slept, chained, in Dragonstone, overfed and rarely mounted, Rhaenyra frolicked with her own uncle and assumed her fate was written in stone. But the differences and rivalry between the so called blacks and greens ran deeper than kindred, and bitterly so.

With so many sons bearing the blood of the dragon and in posession of Dragonstone -traditional apanage of the heir-, the succession seemed secured, there were no clouds in the sky when the queen entered confinement, to deliver her latest child. But, when she did, her father’s corpse had been festering in a closed chamber for days, and as maggots bursting from his skin, traitors had claimed a Crown that weren’t theirs to claim, and a princeling was proclaimed a king. Aegon the Elder, son of Alicent and Viserys, boasted that the Iron Throne was not Rhaenyra’s to sit, as long as she had brothers of her blood to grace the seat. Hate runs deeper than love and flocks of ravens darkened the skies; drums and the whistling sound of naked steal silenced words of wisdom.

    Biography:

"Rhaenyra Targaryen -blissfully married to Laenor Velaryon-, fathered three strong and healthy children, Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey. All of them were, remarkably, lacking the traits of Old Valyria, being brown-haired and pug nosed, unlike both their parents. Rhaenyra used to say they very much looked like her late mother, Aemma Arryn; no-one dared to claim otherwise. Ser Laenor prefered frolicking in High Tide, with his good companion Qarl Correy, to be in his wife's good companies in either Dragonstone or King's Landing, while she kept her own court in the former and partaked in the later's pageants and pleasantries. Rhaenyra was oft well acompanied, luckily, by good servants like Harwin Strong, her sworn sword and a quite formidable man. Many whispered the children were not Laenor's, which was tantamount of accusing Lady Rhaenyra of treason. However, the rumours diminished after in short succession all the Velaryons became dragonriders, erasing many doubts about their legitimacy; one should be consider that dragon blood is still on the mother's side, no matter the father, but such is idle talking. Arrax is Lucerys' mount, a young and nimble, but thriving, dragon. Ser Laenor, alas, died at the hands of his good friend, in Spicetown, leaving Rhaenyra devastated (...) Very shortly after the funeral, she married her uncle Daemon.

(...) he is blissfully betrothed to his noble cousin, Lady Rhaena of Pentos, daughter to Lord Daemon and Lady Laena Velaryon, ever since the late Lady Velaryon and the princess arranged the said match, who was publicly announced by them both and condoned by the king, His Grace Viserys (...)

Luke, thus nicknamed by his kin and blood, secondborn son of Laenor and his wife, was a quite confident boy, who at very young age managed to take out prince Aemond's eye, after the older boy had broken his nose. Honest, upright and reasonable, Lucerys probably is the most level-headed of his full-siblings, not being as fiery or brazen as many of his relatives. Gentle and kind, he is also strong of body, and has squired for several years with Ser Erryk Cargyll; or to Ser Arryk, one does not know. Among the young Velaryons he certainly is the one resembling his good-natured grandfather the most, and Viserys, understandably, doted on him. During the most recent illness of Lord Corlys, Rhaenyra tried to make Luke heir to Driftmark, but the old Sea Snake was unwilling to do as much, leaving the succession open. Lord Velaryon, who gave absolutely no credence to all the gossips concerning his grandson's paternity, must have been too infirm to settle succession back then, but surely he will soon make the young Lucerys his only heir. Or so Rhaenyra strongly hopes (...)"

Excerpt of Maester Gerardys' personal notes about Rhaenyra's righteous rule. Book I, page two-and-twenty.
