    Its strange that my computer would be having that problem. Its been working fine when I left the original desr_strat file with its tweaked version (they had different names however so that my tweak would work). So I removed the the originals out of the imperial_campaign file which I left. The base I haven't done anything in minus the map.rwm so considering you said it doesn't what I do with that file I restored the original. However after all of this its still doing it...

    But I made an intersting discovery from the system log. Apparently the only thing its reporting wrong is this.

    When I try to start the game I just select England to see if it works. Perhaps it can't find the tga files? I will look into it till you answer back.

    You cant rename the files

    Right click the file, select properties, uncheck "read only", save the file, re-check "read only".

    Do all the files have to be like that or just the ones I change? I checked the Read-Only to all the files I changed and the problem is still there. The system log hasn't changed either.

    If I understood you correctly, you were not able to figure out how to save the read only files such as descr_strat without doing a save as. So to get around this you saved the files as a different name. Then you tried to run the mod with the files named differently.

    If you uncheck read only then you can save files like descr_strat without having to do a save as. Then recheck read only after you save. If the file does not have read only checked in vanilla, then there is no need to check read only. I think it is just the text files in the world folder that have read only checked.

    But the key underlining point is that you cannot rename the files. The files must keep their original names.

    About banners, to see them, just place descr_banners_new.XML in your main MTWII folder. It will not work from a mod folder.

    The limit is in the number of factions that can be displayed on the faction selection screen. You will have to leave some as nonplayable unless you modify mtw2.int.

    For Mercantilism TW I got 31 factions in, 13 of them from scratch. The Pope and Slave factions are set to nonplayable, but the other 29 are completely playable.

    Alright, I know that you can have only 31 factions, so where does the game get the number 31 from? If I only have say 5 factions in the descr_strat file under playable, nonplayable and such, does that mean that I have 26 slots left, or does it depend on the amount of factions inside descr_sm_factions? Sorry for the questions, but this has been bugging me for some time...

    When I made my factions I also erased the normans, saxons, byzantines, aztecs, and timurids from the game. So all of my files have only 31, so I can't give you a definitive answer. But my best educated guess is that it is the number of factions listed in descr_strat.



    It's about time I gave this guide a good old fashioned critiquing.

    The following files are not necessary:
    descr_banners_new.xml
    export_descr_buildings.txt
    campaign_script.txt
    descr_win_conditions.txt

    Step 7, Update 1
    Do NOT change the logo_index. That will cause the game to default to an icon with a wooden wall on it. The logo indices refer to tga's which we can edit, however they must first be cross referenced in the .sd files. The .sd files define the location of the loga within the tga files and give it a name. That name referenced in the .sd files is what gets put in for the logo index in sm factions.

    However, the .sd files are unedittable right now. If you open them in notepad most of it is all scrambled. The part concerning the logo indices are not scrambled, however when I try to rename an index it causes CTD. Anyways, before and after some of the logo indices are some weird characters, it would be impossible to add new logos through notepad. However, there is some promising work being done in the Modding Wiki at the .org, led by Alpaca they are making an attempt to crack the .sd files. Someone (who I forgot his name) has successfully added a new logo from scratch by editting the .sd files using binary. Now lets just hope they can create an editor for us normal people.

    Step 11
    Tip: To speed up the editting of this file, copy and paste all of the entries from one faction into word. Press "ctrl"+"f" to bring up the find tool. Click the "find and replace" tab. In the find entry, type the name of the FACTION in caps. Then in replace write the name of the faction you want to change it to (I don't think caps are necessary, but for continuity I always cap this). Then click the advanced options button and check the "case sensitive" box. Then click replace all. Then do the same thing only change the Faction (in proper case) to the name of the new faction. Finally do the same for the denonym of the faction name (for example, Bulgarian).

    Step 14
    The .rwm file only needs to be deleted when editing the tga's in the base folder. The .rwm file stores all of the map data. When you delete it the .rwm file is regenerated from the information contained in all of those tgas. The process is similar to the strings.bin files where the txt files are the tgas and the strings.bin files are the .rwm file.

    Some things I noticed you missed:
    1. The pictures for the unit cards are found in ui/units
    2. The pictures for the unit info screen are found in ui/unit_info
    3. The pictures for generals and captain in prebattle are in ui/captain banners.
    4. The little logo on the tooltip, for example in this screenshot:

    Is the SMALL_LOGO_INDEX in sm factions.

    For Wontonman

    After not being able to spot the errors by looking at the file, I came up with nothing. What I need to solve something with so many variables changed is the error log. But not only because I really didn't feel like waiting for you to send me it, but you would probably send me the useless error log (without the cfg command), so I took the liberty of setting up your mod and debugging it myself.

    I located the source of error in the EDB. That thing was just ridden with errors. For starters, you had a non existant faction (wales) listed in 53 entries. You also had missing commas and one place with a missing space and comma. Just one of those errors causes CTD, and you had about 100

    After some frustrating debugging I finally got the thing running. Then to play Switzerland you need to do one of two things. Put the rebels in nonplayable or edit the mtw2.int file to allow for more than 21 selectable playable factions.

    Although I have taken care of the hard vital errors for you, by the looks of the error log you have quite a bit more work.

    The ownership matches have to do with you giving a faction the ability to recruit a unit in EDB that they cannot have (in EDU).

    You have a couple issues with your family trees and set the population of a settlement above the max for its level. You also forgot to delete the slave army that is in Bruges which you gave to the Normans.

    I’ll make new update for some time. It is very hard for updating so large post.

    For Mercantilism TW I got 31 factions in, 13 of them from scratch. The Pope and Slave factions are set to nonplayable, but the other 29 are completely playable.
    Great! Then it is solved.

    1. The pictures for the unit cards are found in ui/units
    2. The pictures for the unit info screen are found in ui/unit_info
    3. The pictures for generals and captain in prebattle are in ui/captain banners.
    O no, I didn’t miss them. That should be in tutorials for units, not faction.

    Here's a question for some of you - how do you get the new faction symbols for the diplomacy/faction cycle thing at the end of the turn? Do you just add them in to the ui files, or do you need to add something somewhere.

    They are in the shared tgas. You can modify the existing ones there but cannot make new ones. They are referenced as the logo_index in sm_factions. But between the shared tgas and sm factions they much first be cross referenced and defined in the .sd files. Right now the .sd files are all garbled and cannot be editted. If you open them in notepad you will get a semi understandable text, but it still cannot be editted.

    Currently some at the org are working on cracking these files, and someone was able to successfully make a new one by editting the binary. But there is still yet to be a converter or editor for us normal modders.

"logo_index" and "small_logo_index" link to UI entries on files in data/ui/southern/european/interface (check this tutorial) - the icons in the fe_ folders are linked through the faction name. If you change these two entries and don't supply a proper ui entry, you will simply lose the faction icon where it appears (for example the faction button on the strategy map).

    Furthermore, the icons in _48 are for the faction selection screen and those in _80 are for battles. I'm not sure about the _24 ones.

    Edit: The _24 ones are used in the custom battle selection screen for example.

    Great job! I added new logos for two new faction, the Kingdom of Armenia and the Tsardom of Serbia. Both factions will be added in the next release of my mod.

    I have a problem, I have completed the tutorial, but when I run mymod, there appears a MEDIEVAL TW 2 screen but before the intro movies, everything goes black and I see only mouse cursor. Before adding a new faction I have added some regions, and they worked. So I dont think that is a problem. Need help!
