Thread: Guide of Hellenic Traits and Anciliaries

  1. #1

Default Guide of Hellenic Traits and Anciliaries

This guide was, at first, designed to be a general guide on Hellenic traits, anciliaries, buildings, units, mechanics, and then for the Koinon Hellenon. Quickly it became apparent that this task was way too big, so instead, I am making, firstly, a guidefor traits, that I will later expand on generic Hellenic anciliaries. Anything after that is out of conjecture for now.
So here's the complete list of traits, effects (Effects 1 as found in export_descr_character_traits.txts, and Effects 2 as found in export_vnvs.txt in case of discrepancy), levels (when apply), thresholds (for progressive traits), triggers, descriptions (the last added mostly because I find some of them hillarious), and commentary when deemed necessary. Expect lots of redundancy, as I will try to explain every single line. So consider this an amateur introduction to trait reading as well.
In the order they appear in the export_descr_character_traits.txt.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Antitraits: KleronomosBasileios, Koiranides
    Effects: Influence +2, Law +2, Command +1, Confidence +1, Personal Security +3
Triggers: Basically be the FL of any Hellenic faction but Baktria, KH, and Pergamon.
    Description:
All eyes, both at court and in foreign halls, are on this man, and with good reason. He is the one, true king and with the favour of Tyche, he will see his realm grow and prosper!

    2. KleronomosBasileios (aka Diadokhos)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Antitraits: Basileus, ExKleronomosBasileios
Effects: Influence +1, Personal Security +2
Triggers: Basically be the FH of any Hellenic faction but Baktria, KH, and Pergamon.
    Description:
"This man is expected to take the throne when its current occupant has breathed his last. Naturally, this makes him a central figure at court."

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 1
    Effects: Command -5, Influence -5, Movement -20 (100%)
    Description:
"This youth is undergoing the traditional Spartan agoge, or training. It was an upbringing that placed an emphasis on physical endurance. The boys went barefoot at all times and in all weather, wearing only a homespun garment even in the coldest of winter. Their rations were kept short so that they had to steal food to survive, but they were punished severely if caught. Paramilitary physical exercises were almost daily experiences. By the time they crossed over into manhood, around the age of eighteen, they began a period of service similar to that of epheboi. Two years later, they entered into the standing army of adult citizen warriors.
Once the training has started, interrupting it (ending a turn outside of Sparte) will possibly lead to negative consequences for the individual. They also have movement reduced during this time, as they are expected to remain in Sparte for the duration."
Commentary: The very low movement is to "encourage" the player to not leave Sparta. You can (did accidentaly for reasons explained further in the KH guide), but ending the turn outside will cause an automatic fail as it will be shown later.

    2. SpartanFailed Agoge (aka [Spartan] Failed in Spartan Agoge)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 2
Effects: Influence -2, Troop Morale -2
    Description:
"This man has failed to complete the Spartan agoge or upbringing. As a Spartan, it was expected of him, and failing to complete it is quite an embarrassment. This will haunt him for the rest of his life, but he still may overcome the embarrassment if he is of strong enough character."
Commentary: Failing the Agoge is, of course, specially bad for Spartan characters. If the character may fail, avoid partaking in the Agoge. If you are doing the Agoge, do everything you can to not fail.

    3. Failed_Agoge (aka Failed in Spartan Agoge)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 3
    Effects: Influence -1
    Description:
"For some reason, this man has been removed from the Spartan agoge and did not complete the upbringing that he began there. Since he is not a Spartan, this is slightly embarrassing but no large impediment to his future public life in and of itself, though it has caused a few rumours to circulate among his peers."
Commentary: Minor for most factions, troublesome for KH.

    4. BarelyCompleted_Agoge (aka Barely Completed Spartan Agoge)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 4
    Effects: None at all.
    Description:
"This man has barely completed the traditional Spartan agoge. He has made it through the difficult experience of a number of years, but he is marked as a man of which little is expected. He will take a wife and have children, and the best that may be hoped for is that maybe one of them will prove worthy of their ancestors in his stead."

    5. Completed_Agoge (aka Completed Spartan Agoge)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 5
    Effects: Influence +1, Confidence +1
    Description:
"This man has completed the traditional Spartan agoge, or upbringing. A very difficult education has tested his body and mind in the extreme, and he will probably benefit from the experience. He is marked for the rest of his life because of this upbringing, and his peers respect him greatly for it."
Commentary: Influence is very important for KH. Confidence is useful for anyone, as it improves the morale of the entire army in the field.

    6. Excelled_Agoge (aka Excelled in Spartan Agoge)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 6
    Effects: Influence +2, Confidence +2
    Description:
"This man has completed and excelled in the traditional Spartan agoge, or upbringing. With all of the characteristics of a born leader, and a strict education as many men of Sparte have experienced before him, his performance has marked him for a great future - whether he follows through on it or not."
Commentary: Only got it once, very few characters will have the natural attributes to get this version.

Commentary: Every turn spent inside Sparta adds 1 point. When it reaches 8, it will move to the next level, which translates to a successful training. Used for every Stage of Life training in Sparta.

Commentary: There's no risk to acquire expressely bad traits from the Agoge. Every character can do it, as long as they stay in Sparte, but only Vigorous characters will acquire good results out of it. The best result is very rare.

    1. Agoge_Paidiskos (aka Paidiskos)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 1
    Effects: Influence -5, Movement -15 (50%)
    Decription:
"This youth has completed the Spartan agoge, or training, and is now required to serve in a position similar to an ephebos. This period traditionally lasts for two years, between the ages of 18 and 20, though it may vary depending upon the age the youth has begun the agoge. The youth often serves on border defense, further training, during this time. He may fight if it is necessitated, but should endeavour to remain in Sparte or at least in Lakonia itself during this period. When this period ends, he will join the standing army of adult citizen warriors and stand for election into a common mess."
Commentary: Acquired at the beginning of the Paidiskos training. Movement outside Sparte is possible, and important for KH, but pointless for all other Hellenes.

    2. Failed_Paidiskos (aka Failed as Paidiskos)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Effects: Influence -1, Troop Morale -1
    Decription:
"This man has undergone most of the traditional Spartan agoge, or training, but for some reason, while serving as a Paidiskos, he has left the Peloponnesos entirely and neglected his duties to guard his homeland. He will bear the burden of this error for a long time, but he may still overcome the embarrassment if he is of strong enough character."
Commentary: Acquired after failing the Paidiskos training. The troop morale hit is bad for everybody, as it is a permanent penalty for their performance as general. The influence hit is pretty bad for KH.

    3. Agoge_Paidiskos_Ended (aka Accomplished Paidiskos)

Commentary: Similar to the Spartan Agoge Progress, buit this version counts turns spent inside the region of Lakonike, rather than in the settlement of Sparte. Only acquired if the character is undergoing Paidiskos training.

Commentary: Completely trivial to acquire, the confidence bonus will be useful to any general. If the character already underwent Agoge and had a positive result, there's no reason to not go further. Languorous characters will have no benefit at all, but will also not get anything negative from it.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Threshold 1
    Effects: Influence -5, Movement -16 (80%), Ambush Command +2
    Description:
"This youth has completed the Spartan agoge, or training, and due to certain of his qualities deemed ideal for the service, he now has become a member of the Krypteia, or the Spartan "Secret Service Brigade." This period will last for a year or two, during which he SHOULD NOT remain in the polis of Sparte, but in Lakonia still preferably. During this time he should live as a solitary individual, not as a part of a body of soldiers. Armed with only a knife and obliged to fend for themselves, the Kryptoi's main objective was to kill Helots whom they should find to be problematic or a danger to the Spartan state. When this period ends, they will rejoin the Spartan citizen soldiers, although they will retain throughout their lives remnants of their service."
Commentary: Acquired when you begin your training at the Krypteia. The movement penalty is large, but smaller than the Agoge training, probably so the character has a chance to move out of the settlement regardless of season.

    2. Failed_Kryptos (aka Failed as Kryptos)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

This is a great source of embarrassment and he has proved a failure as a member of the Krypteia. He will bear the burden of this error for the rest of his life, but he may still overcome the embarrassment if he is of strong enough character."
Commentary: As usual, the troop morale hit is bad for any faction, the Influence hit stings the most for KH.

Commentary: The gain_desc also states "This service may haunt him or provide him with more skills, depending upon his personality". The bonuses are mostly utility and governance, although the ambush command can be handy for auto-resolve ambushes.

Commentary: Seems to be mutually exclusive with Paidiskos, and only for Spartans. The bonuses are less interesting, although arguably with some use, specially for governance of contested regions (with the added Security bonuses). As it is chance based, I don't see a way to make sure you get Paidiskos instead of it, so just roll with it.

There's a lot of traits from this point on that are not active, mostly concerning Olympics and other systems that aren't in place. I will jump from EligibleForOlympics to Strategos, returning the count from Proxenos on, which I am sure is working.

It remains to be seen if he will be successful in this position."
Commentary: As I like educating all my FM until they are 28, I rarely get to make use of the discount on governors, as they very often become Ergepistates while studying in Athens and not governing it. You can do some moving around to make use of it though.

Commentary: One of the Hellenistic offices that can make or break a governor. Luckily, odds seem to be rather positive over all, so no reason to try to avoid it. Vigorous characters are specially privileged, which is a general trend for what I have observed. Notice that the end of the progression is chance based, so it can either end after acquiring just a few points on Good/Bad Builder or Corrupt, or after acquiring many, possibly even getting the max level on these traits.

Commentary: I've seen characters pool up a roughly 50%+ bonus on trade income thanks to positive results in this trait line. That's huge, specially later in game, when trade can make up for roughly 50% of your total income. Even more so for KH, that get many trade bonuses. You can easily max out your odds for positive outcomes by simply lowering your taxes in settlements with Emporiarches, so it is even easier to turn things in your favor, and there's no reason not to.

Commentary: Not the first trigger in order of the document, but I will put it as first for clarity sake. Upon ending turn in a settlement, a character who is not FL nor FH, is not under siege, has more than 85% of his movement points, the settlement walls are better than Wooden Walls, Natural Inteligence above 2 (all Sharp), Natural Energy above 3 (2 in 3 Vigorous), does not have any point in Panegyrarches, does not have the trait-flag InOffice, and is Hellenic, has a 25% chance of becoming an Panegyrarches. Notably less strict to acquire than other offices.

Commentary: Easy office, easy +1 Influence, and with slight odds of acquiring Generous, which is a traitline that makes for fantastic governors.

    Condition Trait Eirenarchos = 1

    Affects ReverseOffice 1 Chance 100
    Affects OutOfOffice 4 Chance 100
On turn's end, if a character has the trait Eirenarchos, and reached 4 levels in the trait-flag InOffice (4 turns), he will acquire the trait-flag ReverseOffice, losing the office, and 4 levels in the trait-flag OutOfOffice, presumably zeroing their InOffice pool.

Commentary: Benign Ruler is one of the very best governor traits possible. This office basically locks your characters out of it, and characters being educated are extremely prone to receive it. The only way to reduce HarshRuler points is by occupying settlements, so hardly achievable for governors. One of the prices you pay for good stuff Hellenics get. I STRONGLY recommend to carry out-of-age FMs around as auxiliary generals to get them Blooded just to avoid this office (chances after 8 turns). Sending them to smash any tiny rebel stacks will also do it.

Commentary: Upon ending turn outside a settlement, a character who is Gynaikonomos and has two points in the trait-flag GynaikonomosLeftSettlement loses the office and resets the trait-flag pool. Effectivelly, can spend three turns outside a settlement.

Commentary: Extra fertility means more chances to get sons who will be educated and raised to be the best generals/governors possible. Epicurean, although is a corruption trait, it is probably the least harmful of the bunch, granting trade income bonus at the price of reduced bribe resistance. Not a real danger as long as the character is in a town or in the head of an army.
