Motherboard memory standard

hi again,

I don't have enough money to buy a whole new computer out right. So I'm looking into building a new one over time. my intension is to replace old parts of my existing computer until I have a new one.

-Existing Computer Specs: P4 3.4ghz, 2GB DDR2 (533) 240pin RAM, SATA 3Gb/s HD, 7800gt PCI-e video card.

-Desired Goal: A computer with a core 2 duo processor.

So I think my first move should be a new motherboard. one that supports both p4 and core2 duo. right?

-TO THE POINT... What I wanted to ask yall about was memory standard for motherboards. If i want to use my current RAM for the time being (DDR 533) does the motherboard I buy HAVE to have 533 as It's memory standard? In other words a motherboard with a DDR2 677 memory standard won't work?

most motherboards support a wide range of memory speeds, so it shouldn't matter as long as it's DDR2, i haven't seen many mobo's that only support 677Mhz and up. Just check before you buy.

Most support 533, 677 and 800.

Im not so sure about being able to use a pentium 4 inside a baord designed for core 2 duo, same number of pins but i don't know if the support is there.

I believe you can have a Conroe coupled with DDR400 RAM as well, it doesn't have to be DDR2, but it's probably better that it is, and for the most part, you'll want DDR2 anyway.

looked at the mobos and i guess you were right they can take pentium 4 chips so your plan should be fine.

Looked at the memory standard thing and foudn this on newegg when you look at the specs

I guess memory standard just means the maximum speed it supports.
