    Default New TFT/LCD

My beloved eizo crt is slowly dying...will therefore have to buy a new monitor. Iīve been looking around and concluded that thereīs two candidates of interest: Viewsonic VX922 and Samsung 931BF. Do you guys have some piece of advice regarding models or something else pls post! /C22.

For the most part with monitors you pay for what you get (unless there's a great sale on). Viewsonic is generally cheaper, but thats because they don't make top of the line products. Not to say they aren't acceptable or even good, but they're not great. If you can somehow go see the monitors at a local store, that will help the most. Lastly, anything faster than 8ms is just for bragging rights. I tested some monitors and once the response got to 8ms or faster, they were all the same to me. But then again, maybe I just have slow eyes.

Also, make sure you use a DVI cable if you can, it helps a LOT.

I'm thinking of getting a new monitor to replace my CRT (god bless it), and I've been looking at the VX922.

Hmmm... I see you are content with a 19" monitor. I don't know too much about 19" models. But I can comment a good deal on certain 20inchers, 22inchers, 24inchers, and LCD TV/Monitors (Namely the 37" Westinghouse WM3).

If I were you, I would get the 22" Dell that is on sale for a mere $329!!! I got one on boxing day for $299. Free shipping too. at Dell.ca........ woops.... Canadian only I think

All 22" LCD monitors use the same panel, (A panel made by Chi-Mei). It is a TN-Panel, and thus aren't as great on the colours (really only 16.2 million colours and rendering the other half million with dithering - resulting in a picture not as great as true 8-bit panels, but still a good picture specially with the right settings and a little help from Graphics Card Colour Saturation).

You know what.... just go to hardware sites and look at their reviews on LCD Monitors. Also, I would go to www.hardocp.com and go to their forums and check out the "Displays" section. Tons of people there.

    I'd go with Samsung.

I highly recommend them, especially for the price you pay. They have good contrast ratios and bright screens.

Dell's finish and design isn't as nice as Samsung's, apples, and Sonys', but Dell's share the same lcd internals and panels as many of the high end brands (i think the 2405fpw uses an lg lcd).

I would go for the Samsung as the colours are better.

Have you considered going for a larger screen than 19 inches. I got my 24 inch Acer monitor some months ago for a very reasonable price and I haven't regretted paying the extra. Despite having to be satisfied with a cheaper graphics card to keep within a budget, Total War battles on it are superb at its higher resolutions.

Nice... what kinda fps you get, do you know? Only thing I dislike about the higher resolutions is that your fps drop quite considerably with anything much over 1280 x 1024 (obviously depending on the game and video card you have).

1280 x 1024 is fine for me and I get about 75-100fps with an eVGA 7600 GT

The Samsung 931BF is a beauty. Well worth it, and my recommendation of your two selections. Nothing wrong with viewsonic though, I just prefer the Samsung.

fps = Frames Per Second. Depending on the video card you have, your gameplay will be smooth (higher fps) or slow and choppy which probably means the video card you have isn't up to running the game you're playing.

Possibly, still I have now saved up the money to get a good video card and will have the screen which can handle a higher resolution. I mostly play RTW mods anyway so speed is not an issue.

O.k. I bought the Samsung 931BF, after carefully studing both monitors at the store. I liked the quality finish I got from the Samsung more than from the Viewsonic. Anyway, the final test was of course when I rigged the monitor at home (7950GT, AMD 64 4000+, 2 GB ram) and started to play M2TW and I can only say: wooow.... And I thought the picture would look worse on a LCD monitor compared to my former EIZO CRT monitor...how wrong I was . Maybe the colors isnīt in the same class as my EIZO, but the difference is small. For the rest, itīs much better! Thanks guys for the info. /C22.
