    Default Unit Free Upkeep Question

Question: I was wondering how to tell if a unit is free upkeep. I was playing Rome and none of my units have free upkeep, but I found out some of my minority ethnic units have free upkeep while other ethnic units do not.

As a side rant, I swear barbarian camp is the hardest thing to siege, they have 3 gates compared to 4 gates of a typical city, and unlike original Med TW you can't break down primitive walls with ram... and you can't scale it with ladder even though you are allowed to make ladders... And the camp center has only one road leading into it as opposed to four for a city center. My casualty for besieging barbarian camps are double or even triple my casualty besieging cities....

As a general rule, levies are free upkeep. But you also need to be able to recruit that unit, and have free upkeep slots. Rome doesn't have any free upkeep slots in any of its governments, so it does not enjoy free upkeep.

A shameless plug, but my Extended Unit Descriptions submod adds more unit information (like attack and formation values) in the description section, including whether they have Free Upkeep. A beautiful one that you might not expect for their quality is that Hellenistic Hoplitai (the ones with 5 armor) are free upkeep.

Yep, the regular Hoplitai is the best unit I've seen with the free upkeep. Has anybody seen a better for any faction?

BTW, I also use the EUD submod - thanks, Cryoshakespeare for this!

Yeah I think regular hoplite is the strongest free upkeep unit type (many variants) that actually get chance to enjoy the free upkeep (so not counting the Roman legionary).

Sakan/Parthian/Sarmatian Horse archer are free upkeep (in winter and nomad territory you can get up to 6-8 horse archers free upkeep, which IIRC is like 1000-2000 upkeep), and they are one of the best unit in the game , really satisfying to play on the steppe

If you want to be pedantic you could add that the Dorekim Afriqim are equally strong and also get free upkeep. But they're really just classical hoplites in disguise ...

I don't quite understand why free upkeep units weren't documented. Surely someone assigned that property to them.

We don't make a point of documenting anything as granular as unit attributes. There's a simple general rule: levies are free upkeep. Beyond that it's done on a case-by-case basis.

Thank you, Sertorius. I was not expecting a documentation in the form of a guide or anything requiring preparation for a human reader, but some way of printing out a list of units that have that property checked. Then again, I have no understanding of how this game or mod looks under the hood. As someone working mainly with SQL databases, I may have an overly optimistic expectations on how to retrieve data

Most of the interactions with the game's engine are done via text files. Which should give you a good idea about the level of sophistication in available analysis.

You can search the export_descr_unit.txt for free_upkeep_unit - that's how you find them. Anything more complex and you'll need to find an existing tool or make it for yourself.
