what is the best faction really when you get down to it? and don't say one of the roman ones.

One of the roman ones:-)
the scipii is the best!![]()
Well I think Egypt. They have good phalanx units and the cavalry and chariots are great against infantry.

Yes, one of the roman ones =) More accurately, The house of Julii. I think it's the only faction I've completed the grand campaign with..

3 Roman factions are playable at the start, but I modded all factions playable anyways.. And I didn't complete the campaign until a year after I got the game.. I have serious problems..![]()
Julii because I like the roman units the most, and Julii has the most interesting starting position and colours. =)

Out of the Roman factions the Scipii are easily the BEST. Best Temples, give your troops extra armour and experience when fully upgraded. Also the Scipii receive the BEST navy in the game. They cannot be stopped.
Since the Scipii have legions like all Romans but with extra armour and experience to start and they have the best Navy with a very rich island to start out with (Sicily), they cannot be stopped from sailing anywhere and everywhere they so please.
With the Scipii starting position you can easily take Syracuse early and quickly take Carthage (arguably the best starting city). From owning Sicily and North Africa within the early game the Scipii are nearly unstopable.
In my mind the Julii. I have taken the qhole world with them. And I like when Gaius Julius is born, Instant faction hier/faction leader. I have had him take over his old campain also.
Try the greek cities. I have taken almost the entire campain map with them on high/high
Legate to the Legio I Latina

The best faction is which has money so everyone who starts near Greece could be the "best faction"
imo there are best starting positions like Greece, Egypt or the italian-peninsula so thats why they are the best factions but the easier-start faction maybe the correct term
My favourite would have to be the Seleucids. Great phalanxes, Silver Shield Legioneries, and awesome cavalry (cataphracts, ARMOURED ELEPHANTS). Easily the most diverse faction. LETS GO SELEUCIDS! KICK THOSES EGYPTIANS ASSES!
selucids rock.
I also like the germans because of the hardy infantry and archers
Seleucids are in a tough starting position and economically it takes time to build, but unit wise, they have got everything: Macedonian-type phalanx, Roman-style legionaries, Carthaginian-type elephants, Parthian-style Cataphracts. If you can survive the early stages and take Egypt i think ur pretty much set, since u can easily field different styles of armies rather than the factions which relies on a particular strategy or unit type like greece.
Next id vote the Julii, not 2 hard 2 expand into Gaul and Germany then next id pick Carthage, its got good units but its tough at the start with Egypt and the Romans on ur ass.
CA made the Romans overpowered, but my favorite is Tharace.
I Pwn enemies with bagpipes.
Guitars too.
Too bad Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden pwns me. (They are the world's two best bands.)
Armenia has hands down the most balanced army in the game, but alas never get anywhere because they don't have 3 uber allies and relatively poor land.

How is Armenia of any worth? Even when they get the 'Legionaires' they take two turns to build and they're not that great. Also their cataphract archers are awesome, if you can afford them. Their region is not too rich to support such an expensive army. With Armenia your starting position is terrible with bad starting troops.
I personally like the Julii Romans best.
{ My first post ever!}
Armenias power lies in his cavallry (hint: they banner is a horse) Cataphract-archers are the BEST cavalry unit in the entire game.
Bad starting troops? Yes.
But not bad starting CAVALRY!
They have horse-archers from the start so actually they have the best starting units, total different fighting style but they can own everyone in the east with their full HA army.
In the first turn attack the parthians with everything you have and take and conquer Phraaspa than Arsakia and you secured your eastern border.
Right after this attack pontus and dont stop until you conquer whole asia-minor and from that point you can mass build cat-archers and the world is yours.
In the eastern battlefield every faction could turn out to a superpower because all of them has super-units, Pontus, the Seleucids and Egypt has chariots, Armenia and Parthia has horse-archers.
