Britons racist against Asians?

On the radio today there were remarks concerning a racist attitude towards a young Indian lady actress on the big brother TV show. Everyone seams to be having a go at her, with one former contestant referring to her as 'the Indian' and not many of them can even say her name properly... i mean shilpa, how hard is that? When the beautiful girl first went into the house she was booed quite a lot, at the time i said to my wife, why are they doing that, and she replied; they probably think she is Muslim! If she was then that is still bad imo, but the fact that so many people are so dumb that they don't even know india is mainly a Hindu nation, is beyond belief. Weather that was the case or not, booing her for any racist reason is a truly sad and terrible thing.

Is there a general racism towards Asians including Hindus and other non muslims and is it on the increase?
Do you think people even recognise the differences?
Do people specifically hate/dislike all Indians including Pakistanis etc, regardless of religion?

Just an off note; is there a bit of a 'separation hangover' from when india became independent , or perhaps that was one of many causes?

I could be wrong, but I'm quite sure asians (specifically pakistanis and indians) are the largest immigration group in Britain today. As a result they get more attention than other minority groups because they have a greater sphere of influence.

I think you have a point about the there being an increase in racism towards Asians of late. This is all anecdotal on my part of course, but it seemed that these sorts of moronic attitudes were in decline, until September 11th 2001.
It does seem that a large section of the British public cannot distinguish between Indians and Pakistanis, and therefore are directing their anti-muslim feeling towards both. Fear of Terrorism is the obvious factor, but there has always been an undercurrant of genuine racism in Britain, and the fear of terrorism is a useful tool to be exploited by the far-right, and it can be enough to sway otherwise accomodating people into becoming reactionary.

I also agree that the girl in question is quite ****ing tasty.

Racism against South Asians did infact exist. In the 1980s. I don't know, maybe recent terror bombings lit a fuse, but I think it's died down some over time as the political landscape has found the Indian/Pakistani/Bengali bloc a nice voting squall to fall on in times of need.

The reason many of the BB contestants are racist towards her, and many viewers, is quite obvious. BB appeals to the lower class's, who are often not as educated as us upper classers. Racism is a common trait amongst the idiots. Even many of the BB contestants are uite stupid! Look at Jade Goody, she is one of the biggest idiots I have seen on TV in a while, she is also quite ugly and fat. Shilpa, in huge contrast is intelligent and beautiful. Jade Goody has to then lash out with racist remarks and riddicule her because she cannot hope to content with her.

We are the binge drinking, boorish country and there is a massive amount of racism around. I mean I can only speak from my point of view which tends to interact mostly with the lower class in my day to day life but I see tons of it. I have asian friends who have overheard people they have known for years reffering to them through racial slurs.

Perhaps amongst the more middle to upper class it is not as prevalent, certainly not in my social circle (bar one maybe two) but if my own personal experience is anything to go by there is a massive amount of racism.

Yes I was agreeing with you the first sentence was directed at AoN, that is my genuine experience, met plenty of non racist english people on the board and a few in real life but then I have also encountered tons of it in my life and also on these boards. Its a mixed bag.

Could I also point out I have encountered enough racism coming from the other direction as well. The Asian community in my area as a rule does not mix with the white folk, they all live in the same one or two communities and don't mix with white folk.

So its not the best situation but there it is, doesn't effect me since I am such an easy going person in real life, I get on with everyone.

Edit: Shaun Bingo mate, you said yourself maybe you avoided it. I haven't avoided it, and perhaps that is to do with living in one of the most impoverished parts of Britain but I don't see it. I have a story about attending an infected mushroom gig down in Brummie and it was a hair raising experience that led me to believe it isn't that different the world over.

Count yourself lucky if you miss it, but amongst certain social classes its rampant.

I don't actually think racism is that bad here, mostly we are very tolerant, i also feel it is very easy to make racist remarks in jest when with mates etc none of us are gandi, perhaps sometimes a little tolerance in return is sometimes needed.
I dont think it is a class thing, i mix with all classes – the lower classes are just more brash about it and the higher classes like to use such things to look down there noses at people with y'know.

Shilpa is getting cornered though – i hate it when individuals are singled out and attacked like that. People just don't realise how bad it is for the individual being victimised.

I think we were more tolerant than we are becoming – this is what concerns me.

When i lived in london, my son had a terrible time with racists in a mainly asian school and the authorities [also asian] tried to turn a blind eye. It was so obvious they were racist against the english – which i think is taking the fecking pish. I don't think there has been a very successful cross over of cultures like there has been with the afro-british community.

No its not actually, I know this through being friends with a few of them it is simply a matter of comfort. Mixing with your own people, own culture, language I guess feels more secure. Then there is the people who take that to the extreme.

Five people in a car, a couple of big lads with shaven heads get out of a car to walk to the gig in the middle of the most asian area in the UK and its like a scene out of training day. Asian people start appearing everywhere all glaring, don't know whether they thought the shaven headed ones were Neo Nazi's or something.

Long story short ended up barely getting out with teeth, a fairly brisk move back to the car and getting the hell out of there.

In my experience people people have always been racist against Muslims, this probably comes form our history and that they were a great threat. Perhaps such things are a part of what define our differences! These British racists are just sore losers and a disgrace to their nation and kins. Their fears and insecure mindset made them stood this low. The world has advanced and yet they chose to live in the shadows of their past glories. What a shame. Britain is in dire needs of setting up a university just to train lots of psychiatrists to cure this sickness.

I certianly wouldnt say that there is a terrible amount of racism in Britain! Thats too far, and I live in the most Racist part of Britain - Northern Scotland. Racism is mainly from the lower classes, so I suppose I avoid most of it by living in a an upper class part of town, and the fact that there are only white people in my town, but I still feel like there isnt that much racism in Britain any more.
