Default explorer's guild/ knights of rhodes

Can someone tell me what the Explorer's Guild does? I dropped 3 grand getting their HQ and so far haven't found where I can leverage that expenditure..

And also, do the Knights of Rhodes exists? I have been sitting as the Byzantines with serious lost trade/ tax income from having a stinkin' castle on Rhodes (instead of city with an advanced port etc with a dozen trade routes) for my whole game in the hopes of getting a Knights of Santiago type option awarded to me there...or are the Knights of Rhodes a figment of my imagination in MTWII? :hmmm:

In my game, my plan was to annihilate the Turks and reestablish Christian supremacy in the East, yet the Catholics soon drew my attentions to Italy such that I am now at war with all of Western Europe while the Turks have been my dependable allies, never even patrolling near my part of Asia Minor - and best of all they are completely absorbing the Mongol invasion!
Goes to show how the tides of diplomacy and religion often flow in completely different directions....

I'm 99.99% sure Knights of Rhodes do not exist. Just look at the Byzantine faction roster in Custom battles, that should be indication enough.

Afterall, Knights of Santiago appear in Spain and Portugal's roster.

That will be cool to get some more knightly orders in the game. It does already have the Knights of Malta though as the Knights Hospitaller.

BTW, why doesn't Malta appear on the M2TW map?

It was a pretty important place in the Middle Ages!

Why would the Byzantines get Knight of Rhodes which are a Western European group? Knights belong to the Latin West, not the Greek East.

#1 'Cause I own the goddamn island. Rome wasn't sacked by a bunch of greeks either but I got to do that, why not one cool order?

#2 Your revealing of my historical ineptitude shames me and now I must challenge you in mortal battle..On guard!

What do you think the Varangian Guard are? Very similar to a Knightly Order. Someone could mod in a Varangian Guard Cavalry to be a sort of Knightly Order for the Byzantines. Why not?

The Kataphractoi are pretty much knights, they just don't have the word "knight" in the name. There's no reason the Byzantines (a christian faction) can't have some kind of elite order of cavalry charged with defending their faith.

The Knights of Rhodes are the Knights Hospitallers. When the Holy Land was completely taken over by the Muslims they needed a new place to chill so they first went to Cyprus but moved on when they wanted their very own island to call home. After the Ottomons kicked them outta Rhodes they moved on to Malta, where they beat up on the Ottomons who tried to exterminate them.

The "Knights of Rhodes" continued on Malta until Napoleon "conquered" Malta by getting his fleet into the harbor and past the defenses saying they wanted to resupply. Once past the harbor defenses they turned their guns on the forts and demanded surrender.

Another "glorious" victory for the petite corsican.

The Knights of Rhodes were the Knights of Saint John, the Hospitallers under such greats as Grandmaster Villiers. They were there after loosing their foothold in the Levant and Cypus against the Selyuks.
