Which movie, do you think was the best one in 2006? Forget about "greatest actor" or "greatest picture" but rather think of being best overall film. The most entertaining, the most rewarding and left an impact on you.

My favorite one is (by far) is The Illusionist, which plays about an illusionist in Vienna at the turn of the century.

    A couple of reasons.

First, because It's played by Edward Norton in the leading role and I am an avid Edward Norton fan, I have seen all his movies and he never disappoints. In this movie, he is excellent and his flawless performance should probably win him a few awards.

Second, because of the movie itself is very unique and not your ordinary type of Hollywood movie, It was actually a small budget film and yet It proves that anyone is capable making good movies as long as there is desire and a good story to be told.

Third, and very importantly, is that It plays In Europe and especially Vienna and the historical setting of the movie. Of course the movie is incorrect in many historical facts, such as the son of Franz I Joseph of Austria (King of Hungary and Bohemia, whos heir (Archduke Franz Ferdinand) to the throne was assasinated in Sarajevo/Serbia which caused WWI to happen) , the Crown Prince Leopold (in the movie) isn't called "Leopold" but he was Crown Prince Rudolf who allegedly committed suicide, (and try not to ruin the movie, but there is "something about that) . Anyway, I loved the movie for these, since I have doubts that many Americans really know who Franz Joseph was, or that he was also the King of Hungary and the movie mentions that Franz is in Budapest at the time of happenings, which makes me happy, because I am a Hungarian and I'm glad we aren't forgotten yet.
Also because, even though the movie isn't anything close to reality (Sophie of Bavaria was the mother of Franz Joseph, so cannot be the lover of Franz' son "Leopold" who is suppose to be called Rudolf), but at least throws around some names and shows the beautiful Vienna and the life of this era.

Fourth, is because the movie is very intriguing, especially the story and "Eisenheim" the Illusionist, who starts out like a regular illusionist, but at the end he pulls a trick, that no one will ever forget and makes a giant impact on a far larger scale than anyone can imagine. (about the heir, about the destiny of an empire)

I recommend you to see this movie, it's out on DVD, I have already added to my collection. I can't even think of any other movie that comes close, unless of course you are easily amused by the x-men/superman - that kind of stuff that has little meaning.

I'd have to say Snakes on a Plane. By far the most enjoyable movie going experience of the year.

Not at all. Movies are not made to be philosophical, hell I dont want them to be. Movies should not be aimed to teach because when the attempt they fail miserably.

Snakes on a Plane made no lies about what it was. It had an asinine plot. The movie admitted this and very much mocked itself. The movie was just plain out hilarious, especially in a crowd setting. Is it lower level humor, perhaps. But it is lower level humor done at its best.

The movie never lied about it was, never pretended to be something else. It was really something of a satire and it was well done. You can hate on it all you want, but it was a well done movie. I laughed very hard watching it as did virtually everyone in the theater. Thats the purpose of movies to give us enjoyment and Snakes on a Plane delivered.

    Couldn't agree more.

I haven't watched too many 2006 movies but I think The Departed was simply awesome.

    Flags of Our Fathers, definately...

Showed an aspect of WWII that no other movie had before. It was a moving movie and was also cool to watch.

I heard it had the potential to be the self-serving type, but Eastwood did not venture down that road.
He also directed a movie from the Japanese perspective, really giving both sides a face to identify. I want to see the movie focused on the Japanese.

let me guess: americans courageously charge the enemy while carrying the american flag and patriotic music (hans zimmer-like) is played in the background... very original

    Apocalypto
oh yeah I want to see that. Only problem is that they show movies here about 2 years after they've been released and seen by nearly all civilized countries in the world
