    Default Temperatures

I just built my system (from the "first build thread") and noticed some high temps in the bios right after startup (no games/stressing processes going on). My system temp was 52 degrees celcius, and the CPU was 47 celius. These look like like load temperatures to me. I have the Arctic cooler freezer pro 7, as well as intake/outtake fans. Are these temps really dangerous for idle, and is gaming unadvised?

The problem could be my semi-horrific cable management, though I'm not sure how much that could affect it. I might also put all fans on max. Think a bit of cable management/fan speed tweaking will fit the bill? Thanks.

Check the temperatures when you are actually playing.
And don't put all your **** right next to each other.

If your intake fan is bring in more air then you out-take fan it might be the cause of your higher tempretures (i.e 120mm intake and 92/80mm out-take fan), make sure you more air going out then you have going in.

MOre likely it's becaue you haven't placed the HSF correctly, have a go at reseating it and see if that helps. I have a simler setup to you, doesn your Freezer Pro 7 placed so the fan is blowing air out to the back of the case?

Actually, just looked at some of my motherboard reviews that said the board defaults the HS fan speed pretty low - that may be the cause. I'm pretty sure I placed it correctly, though I will look at it again. I've got 2 120mm system fans, though I'll check their RPM's. Is it alright if they're the same speed? And yes, the arctic cooler has the fan blowing air towards the rear of the case.

    is this an AMD processor?

I think you are fine, Even if your CPU would be running at 60C all the time, you would likely to be ok , unless you're planning to use this CPU for 3-4 years, which is just a rough estimate that your CPU "could" give up on running it over 60C all the time.

I'd say it's too hurt, but then again, to me, anything over 40C is "too hot".
Considering you are only in the BIOS though, I would be concerned.
Try reseating the HS with some Artic Silver Thermal Paste....that usually takes about 5-10C off the temperature......and make sure your exhaust fan is actually blowing outwards (I had a friend who actually made this mistake....and then couldn't figure out the problem).

Arctic Silver is seriously overrated. Believe me, I used to sell the stuff.
The only time it'll get temps down that much is if it's to replaced a previously improperly applied TIM.

After I fixed the CPU fan problem, the CPU temp hits 37-40 celcius in the BIOS. I tried hiding some cables, and that got my system temp down to 49-50 in the BIOS. Do you think playing games on this is now would be too much?

EDIT: I played some games for 20 minutes, rebooted, and looked at the temps. I was at 55 system, 43 CPU. Good or bad? Also, I think one of my Arctic Cooler's legs isnt completely secured - the other 3 look alright. Think this may make a difference?

Doesn't seem too bad. You should be able to set shut-down temps in your Bios. I wouldn't worry too much unless you are seeing some instability. Sometimes it takes a while for temps to stabilise during the "burn in" period.

Thanks, OTZ. Also, one minor note. During heatsink installation, I accidentally touched the pre-applied thermal grease. It left the faintest and smallest of fingerprints in an upper corner. Is this bad? Thanks.

Out of curiousity, what are your hard drive temps, and your graphics card temps?

Depending on his system, neither HDD or GPU temps will be available.

As for touching the thermal paste - this shouldn't have an impact on anything. The pressure from the heatsink is enough to smooth out any rough patches.

If he downloads Speedfan and an nvidia temp monitor he will be able to.

Not all graphics cards have the ability to monitor temps, although pretty much any modern HDD will, if SMART is enabled.

SG. I'd definitely try and address that wonky heatsink if I were you. :hmmm:

Tidying up your cables to improve airflow will help more than you'd think.

Your CPU temp will be relative to the surrounding system temp. The cooler you can get it will show up in pretty much a linear relation.
I managed to knock 10°C off my CPU temps back when I was aircooled by shaving the same amount off my system temps after tidying wiring and cutting out restrictive fan grilles.

I'll second OTZ on the fingerprint issue. Although it's advisable to avoid, most of those TIM pads are in fact made from a phase-change material, so it will even itself out the first time it gets hot enough to do so.

Thanks. If the heatsink isn't 100% secured, (I think one leg might be able to go a bit farther) would this affect anything?

Is there a safe/normal zone for system temps, also?

if you have complete contact between the cpu/thermal paste and the heat sink it should be fine
