Using mods with Steam
If you get a "Failed to find Steam" error like me when you try to run a med2 mod , don't despair. To run the mod I wanted originally to play (The_Long_Road 1.7) was only a few steps away.
1 - Install the mod with the installer (if you want another mod, follow their instructions), attempt to run it, fail.
2 - Make a copy of your medieval2.preferences.cfg, rename it, Zolnerrocks.cfg (or just medieval.prefrences2.cfg)
3 -Then find the line in the The_Long_Road.cfg
"[features]
mod = The_Long_Road
"
Copy it, paste it into your medieval2.preferences.cfg at the top.
4 - Turn off auto-update for medieval2 (you may need to make it work in offline mode, aswell), run, enjoy.
5 - Optional fifth step, aka, fail, PM me or attempt to contact me using AIM and i'll try to help walk you through it. (I'm Zolneirz, for anyone that can't guess)
6 - ??? Sixth step, the mystery unveiled! If you still fail horribly, try adding the command line @The_Long_Road.HDR in the medieval2 switch.
Note - I'm pretty sure this will work for other mods, because all it took was editing the medieval2.preferences.cfg, having the files and a little bit of test-fail-test-work. As this is a half-assed workaround, i'm still trying to find out how to make a steam-friendly, actual path to run the mod.

Re: Using mods with Steam
Or you could allways buy the boxed game and only have to do one thing to make it run....install it.

Re: Using mods with Steam
I don't mean to bump a thread that is well over a year old but I searched the forums for getting stuff to work on Steam and found this. I don't have the mod listed here, however I have downloaded the Regions & Provinces mod and installed into my Steam Directory.
However, it's simply not working. I tried doing what was said here in the original post about editing the cfg file but all that did was crash my game.
So does anyone else use the Regions & Provinces mod AND the Steam version of Med:II who can help me?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Using mods with Steam
Here's what I did:
1. Downloaded the mod
2. Installed the mod
3. Renamed the mod folder to the name of the Kingdoms Campaign that I play the least and rename the Kindoms campaign folder into something else. For example, I installed TATW into the M2TW folder in steam. Then I renamed the Crusades (least played) into something like TA. I then renamed Third Age into Crusades.
4. Brought up the Kingdoms menu (the thing with the choices of which campaign you want to play) and chose Crusades (the one I replaced). It ran Third Age and worked fine.
I hope that helped.
