Setting Information: Norman Conquest
Overall Setting Information:
The setting begins on the day of William's coronation: December 25th, 1066.
William's supporters will be congregated here: his Norman vassals chief amongst them, as well as those Frankish, Flemish and Breton lords that lent troops to support him. Most of the Anglo-Saxon clergy will also be present, as well as Edgar the Atheling, who submitted himself to William and recognised his claim as King. Other Anglo-Saxon nobles may choose to be present if they wish.
William has already been crowned, and oaths have been sworn. That leaves him to divide up the lands he has conquered amongst his followers. This includes the north, if he wishes to immediately set himself against Edwin and Morcar. He may grant those Anglo Saxons who swear allegiance to him land also.
Those Saxons who wish to immediately rebel shall be in the north, with the Earls Edwin and Morcar. They have gathered up what remains of their armies (they withheld troops from Harold before Hastings) and are about to march south to challenge William's right to rule.
Who will my character be?:
Norman aligned characters will be William's vassals, close kin and allies that followed him across the channel and fought with him at Hastings. They will all be French-speaking aristocracy of the knightly class, likely with lands back home that they sold or provided enough income for them to finance their expedition here. Alternatively, they will be the clergymen that followed William to England: the Norman and Frankish clerics that eventually replaced the high ranking Saxon clergy.
Saxon aligned characters will be the Saxon earls and nobles left over from the defeat at Hastings. They raised their forces to fight against the Norweigans and Normans, and have estates in England that supported this endeavour. They must either choose to support the rebellion of Edwin and Morcar or throw their lot in with William.
Starting money/armies:
All characters begin with a year's worth of income in the treasury, and a starting army that is free of upkeep until 1069 or until hostilities cease.
