Long years have passed since the Carthaginian army set sail from North Africa and the city of Carthago never received good news. The mighty fleet that they had sent: it was not enough to defeat that of the Greeks. The personal agents of the Suffet, professional assassins and spies tasked to weaken the defenses: they couldn't operate alone while hoplites scouted every polis for foreigners there is the Peloponnesian. The armies, the true sons of Carthage, blessed by Baal'Hammon with a warlike fever: they were seasick and tired. The tiremes of the Republic laid empty and deserted in the Roman outposts near the coastline. The expedition so far was a failure and the Greeks would not let the army disembark to siege the city.

But the war council was restless. Plans were written, almost put into motion, then discarded the last minute over and over again. Generals and advisors spoke over each other.
Perhaps the Romans could invade Corinth? - If only their legions could come back from their graves after their crushing defeat from the Spartan king who, if the tales of the scattered forces tell are true, charged into thousands of Roman soldiers only with his loyal bodyguards. The last thing some of these men seen was the blood-rage in the Spartan king's eyes.
Maybe the capture of Crete could do the trick, pulling the main greek fleet away... And from there we could plan the invasion of not Sparta, but Athens? - A dream, only to be shattered to pieces when a reinforcing fleet from the south emerged to counter our offensive.
The Dacians! Those loyal barbarians have beaten Macedon, what stops them from pillaging and looting the south too? - The Egyptians. The Egyptians? The Ptolemies have sure become bold from their decade's old incestual marriages! A sudden laughing of the generals broke the anxious waiting for a second.

Enough! Shouted the Suffet as he emerged from the other end of the tent with a golden breastplate, attican helmet, and a jaguar cape. You incompetent miserable generals of the republic... Do you think this is fun and games? Do you think that careful plans will gain us victory? You think that we can rely on those degenerate, failed reprints of the Etruscans or the filthy barbarians coming down from their primitive huts to gain glory for their nonexistent civilization? Do you think the pride of our republic doesn't erode away every day while you let the greeks get away with their egoism and their refusal to submit to our generous will over Syracuse? Those fools laugh and drink and sleep their whores day and night in the knowledge that they aretoo good, too ancient, too noble to be defeated.

The shouting gained the attention of the nearby troops, cavalrymen, spearmen and elephant tamers alike as they flocked to the tent to hear the possible new announcement. Some soldiers even had a moment of relief as it seemed from the disagreement of their leaders that the expedition would be ended and they would go home. But it was not to be. The Suffet came out of the tent and only said: Bring me my elephants.

The Greeks: proud as they were did not anticipate an attack with only elephants, cavalrymen and some mercenaries bribed along the way. Drunk soldiers wandered around the stone walls and the gates were undefended, scouts unsent into the wilderness. And when a faint light was seen from the towers of Sparta, it was too late. Before the gates could be fully closed, elephants smashed through them, trampling on the phalangites who tried to hold them back with their sarissas. The spears broke on the thick hide of the beastly animals, as the spines of man and women shattered after the shadow of their doom blocked the illuminating moonlight. It was a great massacre. While the elephants raged in the streets and cavalrymen torched the barracks, the Suffet himself rode to the town square and brought down the statue of Apollo. The cities spirit was broken, the spartan myth destroyed and their newly elected king captured. Stubborn as he is, he refused the peace offer and was crucified with a full view of the burning capital.

The Suffet however, knew his fate. Retaliation would come and the reinforcements would not arrive in time. But the deed was done and his people would rejoice him forever as the man who did what the Persians could never do.

Athens , Corinth and Crete weeps at the fall of Sparta, the fall of its 2 spartan companies [silver exp] , 5 armoured hoplites [ 2exp each] and king and additional general with his 2 additional units of cavalry and 2 mercenary cretans archers [1exp].......Mergor might have felt pain in our blow against Rome, but here he delivers it two fold in return ! Considering the casualties rate i rather suspect a square capture here rather than facing our forces in combat as a spartan's would'nt thrown down there shields with only 300 souls lost, as greeks would prefer to fight man to man , rather than those tricksy carthagians....Athens calls upon Egypt and Armenia to honour their pledge's they gave , to defend Greece against the Roman and Carthaginian Empires aggression lest the centre ground be lost , and they in turn be threaten'd .... [would have given a +1rep] but it will not allow it , prob because of mergor's great turns elsewhere

The greek powers were certainly in a state of shock at Sparta falling , a feat that was perhaps unheard of in this age , and in the past , and many of the City states rocked to and fro about what to do ....but there was little choice in what to do in the end, to submit ? or to fight for freedom , the choice was no choice at all , when it came to it. The Romans counterattacked at Thermon with there own faction leader, who had arrived personally to supervise, the attack at Thermon , with perhaps the 4 other generals and family members falling , the cost of fighting in the greek peninsular was a proving a heavy cost indeed.

In the northern western shores, the romans again sent more men, as ever more romans arrived, but the Spartan king fought back , as best he could against the roman legions. One thing however was learnt , that the roman's had been stretched, that was to be sure, as these newcomers to the shore of Illyria were mostly town militia , probably called from there defense of roman cities , to fill the gap that the eastern roman army had left with its passing. The spartan king killed over two hundred of these roman newcomers [not all on his own ] , before his small battlegroup were pushed back to a fort, where he was surrounded and fought to his last breath dying in a matter of glory that he desired, with only the peltast company managing to flee , to tell of his passing.

The Armenian response , had been swift, indeed, taking back sparta for there own , but tales from greek spies also warned of roman diplomat's and a Carthaginian assassin had now reached Messenia , so the greeks warned there allies here of there potential damage they could cause . But the greeks again where not silent , at this time , again mounting a offensive back again at Thermon hoping to catch the roman faction leader , but first the Corinth strait must be cleared of Roman shipping with a attack.

Once the strait had been cleared, the greeks bought across some mercenary hoplites which attacked the city, the gates having been opened by spies , and they stormed into the city , disappointed to find the Roman faction leader had fled back to his ships leaving the ballista company to fend for itself. The mercenaries attempted to form a phalanx when the small crew suddenly catching them by surprise with daggers drawn . But the hoplites soon dropped there hoplite spears changing to the Kopis blade, a weapon more suited to the brutal hand to hand which favored the heavier armoured greeks in the city streets.

    -------------------

Thermon being retaken , and the ballista company destroyed , the greeks turned to the matter of the carthagian shipping still near there shores , and sent some heavy galleys to show them the error of their ways.

The greeks communicated to the armenian's and egyptian's as papers were exchanged and the city of Sparta was given again into Greek hands . The Spartans in thanks for their efforts, sent out a small naval force to strike against a damaged carthagian fleet , a fleet reported to have carthagian spies aboard. The spartans took great delight at reaching them out at sea, meeting there fleet and destroying all aboard that lived, before turning there fleet , aflame , drifting in the wind, before they sunk into the sea. Driving hard a little to the south the spartan fleet also met a roman fleet, which likewise fared with the same fate.

Likewise the season begun as it had always progressed in this dark age, with the greek states , striking out against the romans who had again taken thermon , and the greeks were eager to take it back. Spies were again sent out , opening gates and jamming them open as a single militia hoplite company landed nearby and attacked the city. They met the roman defenders , a single company of town miltia in the square, and the combat was conclusive . Other than that little was done , apart from the building of still more wooden fortresses to fortify the greek mainland, securing routes invaders could take .
