Would it be possible for cavalry to do this also when charging against other charging cavalry?
If I remember correctly, both horses and riders are noted to be rather reluctant to physically slam into another mass of horse and metal (admittedly also a small amount of human) in Goldsworthy´s book about the Roman army.
I recall there being accounts of Napoleonic warfare era cavalry action, in which one side either fled, both sides stopped at arms length to posture before joining into melee or both sides mutually passing through each other to not end in a suicidal heap of flesh.
The development of Roman arms and armour fit this description of combat, with f.e. later helmets being specifically built to protet against hits from all sides.
IMO it would be best if charging close order cavalry rear up when facing other heavy cavalry, more open order hybrid melee javelin cavalry pass through each other to converge in a chaotic melee and when these different types charge each other the heavy cavalry wins.
Is it possible?
