hi everybody i just wanted to ask around if anybody knows some good and interesting movies taking place in the roman empire time period.

the ones i know until know are:

    - gladiator ; not very historical accurate, cheasy end but good entertainment.

    - a fight for rome ; the same with this.

would be glad for any other movies.

Some classics would be "Sparticus" and "Ben-Hur". These are older movies and I've noticed some younger people have a hard time enjoying them, but well... there it is.

The HBO television series "Rome" was (I should probably say is) great for what little bit I watched of it. I plan on renting it sometime in the very near future. There is plenty of good killin' and cussin' (among... other... adult themes) in the series.

In addition, you may wish to check out "King Arthur". It's Hollywood's take on the Arthurian legend of classic, vaguely associated with the hypothesis that the King Arthur legend is based upon a real Roman figure by the name of Lucius Artorius Castus.

That's all I can think of at the moment. There were some others, done by television networks based upon Cleopatra and Attilla as well.

Oh ben hur is definitly a classic i forgot, though i just donīt like charlton heston, but the great arena scenes alone make it worth watching.

Rome i forgot as well. i got the DVD box and wait desperatly for the beginning of season 2, around 18. january.xouīre right, great show.

have you seen the attila series? might be very interesting as well, since Aetius should play a part in there. someone should make a movie about Aetius, he had a life like a novel.

    more:

    (Marlon Brando) Julius Ceasar (1959)

    Julius Ceasar (2002)

    Imperium: Augustus (2003) (TV)

    "Empire" (2005) (mini)

    I, Claudius (1976)(mini)

    Cleopatra (1963)

..but I agree tough, most of these movies either old, or bad....or both, old and bad. I don't think I watched and liked any other movies than Ben-Hur, Spartacus and the recent Gladiator and the ROME (HBO) out of all.

We watched Cleopatra in my Latin class over this past week. Well, actually, we watched the second part of it. We watched the first part prior to Winter Break. I must say, I found it to be pretty good. Very dramatic, excellent costuming, and action-packed enough to keep me interested, despite the epic length of the damn thing.
Spartacus was pretty cool, as well, but I liked the modernized miniseries better.

Oh, and who could forget, Caligula?

As disgusting as it may have been, it's accurate to what reports we have of Caligula's reign and actions.

How is the Julius Ceasar movie with christopher walken etc. ? looks kind of promising.. though mr. big chris knoth as maybe marc anton ... i donīt know.. but still better than having carrie around him all the time.

the other interessting one might be the mini Empire, or is it really that inaccurate as the comment at imbd says ? got to say the grade of accuracy of rome ist good enough if the rest is entertaining.... good damn i miss rome.

i have heard that there is also a crime investigator movie about rome.. anybody seen that ?

Caesar is not enjoying life - the British weather doesn't agree with him...he's caught a cold. As if that wasn't bad enough, his general, Mark Anthony, is plotting with Cleopatra to overthrow him.

Meanwhile, genius inventor Hengist Pod, has come up with a brilliant idea to stop carts rolling downhill - square wheels. Before he can perfect his idea, however, he and his friend Horsa are captured and sold into slavery. What will become of him...?

Tag line: The funniest film since 54BC.

    Some lines:

Centurion: I'm sorry sir but for the good of Rome you must die! (draws sword)

Caesar: I know I haven't been a very good live Emperor but I'd be an even worse dead one! INFAMY! INFAMY! They've all got it in for me!

    ---------------------------
Cleopatra: One bite from this Asp is enough to kill him...
Mark Anthony bites the head off the snake
Mark Anthony: You're right. Thats shocking.
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    [running gag]
    Julius Caesar: Friends, Romans...
Whoever happens to be next to him: And Countrymen.
    Julius Caesar: I know!
    --------------------------------------------------------------
Julius Caesar: I've cleaned up this city. Have you forgotten my slogan? 'Nihil expectore in omnibus' - no spitting on the public transport.
    --------------------------------------------------------------
Mark Antony: All right, look here Marcus...
Spencius: No, no, I'm Spencius. 'S my brother what's Marcus. We're in partnership now, you know. Marcus & Spencius.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    At the slave market...

Mark Antony: Look at them. All solid bone and muscle.
Spencius: Bone and muscle I've got plenty of. It's brains what people want nowadays.
Mark Antony: They've got brains. Artisans, every one of them. Here you, what did you do in Britain?
Hengist Pod: I was a wheelmaker.
Mark Antony: See that? He makes wheels.
    Hengist Pod: Square ones.
Mark Antony: Square... Never mind. Here, you. What did you do?
    Horsa: I was a hunter.
    Spencius: A hunter?
Mark Antony: A hunter! Now, what about that then? A hunter. What did you hunt?
    Horsa: Romans.
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    Bilius: Hail, Mark Antony!
Mark Antony: Hail - snow, rain, thunder, lighting - the lot! Julius in?
    [Gloria screams and runs out]
Mark Antony: I see he is!
    --------------------------------------------------------------
    [Of the Britons]
Mark Antony: You know I just don't get these Britons; everytime we get a good punch up going, someone behind the line yells "Teas up!" and they all disappear!
Julius Caesar: "Teas up"? How very odd! It must be one of these strange gods they worship, like this other one they're always talking about, "Crumpet."
    Mark Antony: What?
Julius Caesar: "Crum-pet", I don't understand it at all.
Mark Antony: You know something; I don't think these Britons don't want to be conquered.

ugh, I got 10 minutes into that piece of crap and turned it off.

to the actors discussion.. nowadays italians donīt look like romans at all. there have been several kinds of slaves, ostrogoths, westrogoths, huns, langobards, franks, vandals, slavs, many different people that seeked their luck, etc. that mixed themselves with the original inhabitants.so i think the completly original copies of ancient romans are gone!
not exactly true. the romans tended to be of shorter height (compared to Northern Europeans), olive toned skin and dark curly hair. My dad's side of the family is all Italian. Guess what. They're all of shorter height, have olive toned skin and dark curly (or wavy) hair.

I scarcely think that taking creative liberties with the most shocking bits of Suetonius counts as rigorous historical accuracy. It gets the point across, probably, but it's not a treatise on verified claims by any stretch.

Well, my Latin teacher saw it at a conference of Classics teachers, in order to assess its accuracy. He says it's accurate.
He's a classics teacher, and you're not, so I'm taking his word for it.

There's a movie about Vercingetorix played by that actor who played in Highlander (sorry forget his name and the movie... )

Not really about the Romans though but about the Gallic confederacy during Caesar's campaign in Gaul.

Yeah.. Christopher Lambert... I think I've seen it once and there's the siege of Alesia battle if I remember. Klaus Maria Brandauer played Caesar.
