Hey, I wanted to create this thread because there's something that I wanted to ask. There are a few modern classical songs that I love like the Batman theme song, Lord of the Rings theme, and Halo theme songs. What other modern classical music do you like, and do you suggest I listen to?

Hanz zimmer and John Williams are the obvious ones. Thomas newman did the theme to American Beauty which is great. A lot of people will frown at this one but Enya has done some good music.

I will come back to this one as my mind is blank.

Edit Hanz zimmer true romance theme is beautiful, john barry did a few good film scores as well.

Oh, no, no, no. John Williams to me is very uninspired. Listen to every single soundtrack he has composed and you might notice that it all basically sounds the exact same. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Harry Potter all sound like the same movie will little variations. Yeah, sure, there are a few songs from each movie that might stand out but I am no longer a fan of John Williams so much. He copies other composers such as Holst and Dvorak. Listen to The Planets by Holst (specifically Mars, The Bringer of War) and the final movement of Dvorak's New World Symphony. You will tell some major similarities. Anyway, that is my rant against Williams.

Hanz Zimmer has some cool music but most of his music sounds even more of the same as Williams'.

In my mind I'd go for contemporary composers's earlier work. James Horner and Jerry Goldsmith, both well known and accomplished composers for our time, have some great work dating back a few decades.

Livia mentioned Shostakovich. That is a good suggestion as well. Philip Glass has some good music too.

I can send you any of the music I mentioned over MSN or email if you want some.

I love Everyday by Carly Comando. It's a solo piano piece.

I agree with Seneca on Zimmer and Williams. One of Zimmer's songs that he helped on, I have to recommend, is "Vide Cor Meum." It's an opera piece that was created from a part in Dante's La Vita Nuova. The song was written specifically for the movie Hannibal, which you can see in the movie.

The closest contemporary composer that I enjoy is Shostakovich.

IMO,Go for Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard(pointing towards Gladiator). And you may also like James Horner and his great music from the motion picture,Troy. It goes into the depth of soul and let's me experience a completely new world. The best one is 'Remember Me' which is sung by Josh Groban though but it really is a classic I will never forget.So,go...
