Default Germany makes proposition to make the use of Nazi symbols and the denying of the holo

I just read this on my local news but haven't found anything on bbc or cnn yet. The Germans are making a proposition to make Nazi symbols illegal and the denying of the holocaust a crime in EU. They are proposing a minimum penalty of a year in prison.

So what do you all think about this?

I find it funny that people accuse America of withholding free speech while this goes on. Not that I at all agree with Nazism, but it's the principal.

Heavily against it. Freedom of speech should never be sacrificed like that. Besides, ideas like holocaust denial are killed quickest when exposed to ridicule in the marketplace.

I think that governments, those who lean upon them, and many people do not know what either common sense nor liberty is anymore.

That they should keep things in their own country.
That they wanna be sensitive about these sort of things it is understandable but the rest of us don't need these things to be illegal.

Your signature sums up my opinion on this. They don't need to export their collective guilt.
The common culture of a tribe is a sign of its inner cohesion. But tribes are vanishing from the modern world, as are all forms of traditional society. Customs, practices, festivals, rituals and beliefs have acquired a flut and half-hearted quality which reflects our nomadic and rootless existence, predicated as we are on the global air-waves.

I'm glad to see my European counter-parts agree.

Considering I haven't heard any such proposal, could it just be that some lone german politician or other activist once again has to stand in for the whole of Germany? Not even that, there's not even a source and people already accept it as true.

Wow. If there's one thing I like about America is that they completely reject that "hate speech" stuff. I'm all against hate speech but people should have the right to believe, say, wear or wave whatever the ******* they want.

Well it is forbidden here in Germany to show nazi symbols. i partly understand this but on the other hand I think it doesn't help to forbid the symbol, you have to educate the people. I mean the swastika is forbidden but the NPD got some government seats in Mecklenburg and other eastern German provinces. THAT is worse than to display there symbol.

And to make it even worse:

A company producing different stickers including some which show crossed out swastikas or broken swastikas thrown into a trash can are dragged to court by the public prosecutor for displaying nazi symbols?!?!?!?

A guy in Bavaria has to pay 3000 euros because he distributed flyers at a demonstration. The flyers invited people to participate in a discussion AGAINST modern fascism and on the front was the picture of the front cover of a book published by the Austrian University and supported by the Austrian government with a title like "The problem of modern fascism and fundamentalism" and a pic of a crowd doing the hitler salute. He was sued for showing a nazi symbol(the greeting) in public.

    Isn't THAT stupid?

i think its good to say that in light of modern EU legislative systems, such proposals are unlikely to gain any weight, and equally likely to come afoul of the European Charter of Fundamental Freedoms. Given the nazi symbols liks with hinduism, i think there's also the religious side of things to consider.

Exactly. I just came back from Korea and noticed that Buddhists wore Swastika symbols as necklaces. It must suck to be a Buddhist or Hindu in Germany and not be able to wear a Swastika necklace.

    from the link ^^
Germany has put forward measures to help Europe unite forces in the battle against the far-right. This comes amid rising rates of racially motivated crime in the country.
German Justice Minister Brigitte Zypries has announced a Europe-wide initiative to curb right-wing extremism. The European proposals include the introduction of minimum sentences for stirring up racial hatred and incitement to violence, as well as the denial of acts of genocide, such as the Holocaust, and the use of the Nazi swastika symbol.........................................................................................................................
so the main objective here is to fight against far right .
but our thread starter has picked only the part of it ,i wonder why ?:hmmm:

if germany has high rates of racially motivated crime then we call it a racist country and if germany tries to make harsher laws to change its image we call they are free speech suppressors

Taking away a symbol does take away ideas.
As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

I don't think this is neccessary, although how to educate against xenophobia is a tricky subject. I don't suggest Germany repeals its laws but what is right for them is possibly not right for us.

This is not something I have concrete opinions on but the fact that holocaust revisionism is ridiculed in most countries I don't think it is neccessary.
