Default When do you make Client states as Rome?

I am getting a lot of nation wanting to be my client state at around turn 55 for trade agreements. At what point is it a good idea to make/get a client state? They don't seem too beneficial but I amight be wrong. If I just get a trade agreement and they love me and I will eventually expand that way is there a point?

Usually if I want to keep them as buffers against other factions.

Never! You get a mod that changes client states to satrapies

Client states are quite honestly bad as they often declare war on each other or on one of your friendly neighbours, leaving you in a dilemma as overlord. If there was a mechanic for pressuring your clients to behave, then it'd make more sense (for example Rome wielded a large amount of influence with their clients).

But seeing as there is none, they're just a liability that often isn't even worth the role of a buffer kingdom (the client income is also awful and doesn't seem to be moddable). Better to have a defensive ally.

Never, they fight each other more than they help you. I also never do puppet states because AI turns into passive mode whenever they are on players side

When I want a unit that isn't available in the auxiliary list...like chariots or something

Why is this only about Rome?

Is there anything of import besides Rome then?

Currently playing rome, so thats why it was so specific. It goes for any faction though, which uses client states.

What advantage do satrapies have over client states?

What mods are you using to achieve this?

I have got my first client in turn 35 in my current game. I like to have peace with Carthage, peace with all the greeks (except Epeiros and Syracuse; Epeiros especially is great to have as a common enemy to hate, so I usually don't conquer them) and go explore the northern barbs, making friends with the friendly ones, going into war with whoever is the most hated. This usually enables me too turn a lot of the friendly ones into client states and they give nice tribute each year, while defending their own lands with their own armies, while adding to my emperium enabling more armies and fleets for me.

Satrapies won't be warring with each other like client states, for one.

The mod is Data Venia: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...-11th-January)

Interesting, I forgot about that game. I only play this other game called Divide et Impera.

You should check it out! In its start date, Rome is just a backwater that needs some Phoenician education in a Hellenistic world.

    Can't argue with that.

Client states are definitely useful but they require some planning as you don't want to have them neighbouring each other if you can help it nor your best trade partners so that means as Rome you might have 2-3 good clients on different parts of the map. Tribute is always useful and having 1 less front to deploy defensive Legions onto is very handy in DeI.
