Relic has abandoned Dawn of War 3, after disappointing sales and harsh criticism regarding the game's inception and design.
At the same time, a general assumption amongst fans of CA's take on the Warhammer universe has been that the company (unfortunately) wouldn't touch 40K because of concerns of brand cannibalisation. Both Relic and CA work under the supervision of SEGA, which wouldn't want to undercut Relic by giving the green light to a CA-led competitor. The abandonment of Dawn of War, and the unlikelihood of a Dawn of War IV anytime in the future, might raise the prospects for a CA takeover.
What do you think? Personally I think CA has shown it respects the Warhammer franchise, and has the ability to develop new game mechanics suitable to the universe. Sure, a 40K Total War would include many features previously unseen in the series - including planet-based campaigns, automated hand-held weapons, multi-turreted tanks and aircraft - but the fantasy entry has also made inroads into similar, previously unexplored units and combat. We have the Steam Tank, flying units, magic, heroes and various hovering and hulking contraptions already. I'm all for it.
